love the depeche mode "grabbing hands grab all they can" reference on "bloodmoney"
― american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 13 January 2020 15:14 (four years ago) link
in fact i think repurposing an oft-maligned depeche mode lyric kinda summarizes what this album is going for
― american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 13 January 2020 15:28 (four years ago) link
Yesss I love Depeche Mode and that line is so great ❤️ anyone who hates on DM esp for Everything Counts is clearly a clown though

the ending of "concrete" kills me, when everything turns into this bright and beautiful ray of positivity while singing 'turn me into a street'
also the drums on "BLOODMONEY" sound a lot like "closer" to me
― gman59, Monday, 13 January 2020 19:00 (four years ago) link
I didn’t get Closer, but I did get a bit of The Beautiful People from Anything Like Me?

Actually think I’m a bit obsessed with Sit Stay - it’s the whole pre chorus/chorus plus,...that fucking outro is spectacular

watched a couple of the videos and I don't hate it but so far I'm struggling to hear how it's much more than a basic version of Grimes.
― Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 15:59 (four years ago) link
my initial instinct was that it reminds me of some of the stuff Ginger Wildheart has been doing, especially the Hey Hello album, but a full listen might scotch that

― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 16:32 (four years ago) link
i enjoy a lot of this! "concrete" is friggin great.
i do feel like the juxtaposition of pop and heavier stuff works best when the heavy stuff is as well thought-out and complex as the poppy stuff -- like the power metal-type leads and straight industrial moments are a lot more interesting than like, chunky limp bizkit riffs.
love the "wouldn't it be nice" reference in concrete too

i have no beef with grimes but she can't write 1 hook let alone 3 in one song

i should say: i have no MUSICAL beef with grimes

this is probably entirely the wrong question to ask but to what extent was that sinclair character involved in this new album?
― opden gnash (imago), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:17 (four years ago) link
she split from him (and made similar accusations against him)
― idgaf (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:18 (four years ago) link
he has credits on the record but iirc his actual involvement in the songwriting is disputed

ok the rest of the album is imo good-to-very-good rather than great (and as i say, tt has already played me like three of its tracks!) but man Concrete
― opden gnash (imago), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:09 (four years ago) link
the grimes comparison really only makes sense for "sit/stay", which belongs to the same sort of industrial pop territory as "kill v maim". though if grimes actually made the metal album she kept threatening to i'd imagine it'd probably sound fairly similar to this but probably not as good.

I am not sure how much staying power this will have for me, but it is bringing the lols for me right now. Concrete and Sit/Stay are great. A lot of the twists and turns in other tracks are interesting. At the very least it will be a good gym album.

― kornrulez6969, Thursday, 16 January 2020 03:33 (four years ago) link
This is ... something. Very 90's sounding somehow. 'Concrete' and 'Sit/Stay' the clear highlights. The jarring shifts between "songs within songs" are pretty crazy but kinda gimmicky and distract from some genuinely great musical sequences.
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 16 January 2020 10:42 (four years ago) link
i def thought "this sounds like the late 90s" when i was listening to it
― idgaf (roxymuzak), Thursday, 16 January 2020 15:11 (four years ago) link
The worst thing that could happen to her is turning into a real person, with real feelings.
― kornrulez6969, Thursday, 16 January 2020 15:27 (four years ago) link
Def see the '90s thing.
I'm struggling to hear how it's much more than a basic version of Grimes.
Poppy & Grimes are both mining the same Japanese styles, which, tbf, is a completely irrational thing for me to be annoyed about because people can take influence from wherever, but it does annoy me.
― emil.y, Thursday, 16 January 2020 15:36 (four years ago) link
i definitely hear the jpop metal/rock-tinged idol (ie babymetal, momoiro clover z, bis) influence on poppy but i think the influence of jpop on grimes has been pretty overstated beyond her saying she's a fan of like, perfume and kyary in interviews
― ufo, Thursday, 16 January 2020 15:57 (four years ago) link
As I suspected, I loved it this morning when I played it at the gym.

I Disagree joining Concrete and Sit/Stay as the upper tier tracks. Don't Go Outside with all the reprises of previous tracks is awesome too.
― The Traveling Wilkes-Barre's (PBKR), Friday, 17 January 2020 16:15 (four years ago) link
What's cool about this record is, if you don't care for a song, it will change genres in about 20 seconds so just sit tight.
She needs to go all in on the whole post-genre thing, and make an entire record like Concrete, which covers about 5 in one song.

it also compares one track to 'mirwais-era madonna' which i have no idea how will fit with the rest of the stuff going on and cites burial, blawan, and a whole bunch of new wave as influences
