xps I don't think Abrams is a "neolib" but as a person from Georgia who voted for Stacey Abrams in the primary (and would have voted for her in the general if I hadn't moved out of state) I don't understand why people think she's suddenly a strong candidate for the national stage. The simplest explanation is tokenism but I hope there is a better reason.

Sanders now in the lead in RCP's polling for both New Hampshire and Iowa (the latter by a hair, admittedly)

I have generally been impressed with Stacey Abrams when I've heard her speak, but there is an element of her fame among liberal white folks that feels kind of fetishistic, like the whole "black women will save us!" trope. I'm thinking of Pod Save America's asking for donations to Fair Fight (Abrams's voting-rights/election-security organization) by saying "don't disappoint Stacey Abrams!"

Biden has maintained a large lead in primary polling on the best candidate to handle foreign policy (48% to 14% Bernie):https://t.co/o9lGd8jiGe

Miami-Dade County, and most of those vote for the GOP.

Choosing a veep is by definition tokenism though isn’t it? I say that while totally acknowledging that kind of calculus is far more fraught for a POC or a woman than for a middle aged white dude who happens to live in Virginia

I think evol meant that the calculus for choosing a running mate is often based on what/where they represent not their qualifications, etc.

rob, Monday, 6 January 2020 17:13 (four years ago) link

and by that calculus I think she's a good choice, even if the air of inevitability about it from some pundits is def kind of odd. But Abrams as VP with a mandate to focus on voting rights makes way more sense than imagining Warren wasting her final years in public life as Sanders' VP

Former 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Lincoln Chafee is taking another shot at the White House, this time as a member of the Libertarian Party.

Chafee, who switched party affiliation in June 2019, submitted his campaign paperwork to the FEC on Sunday. His website is stamped with the logo “Lincoln Chafee, Libertarian For President.”

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Monday, 6 January 2020 19:15 (four years ago) link

Ocasio-Cortez isn't wrong about Biden. In Britain he'd be "One Nation" Tory, she'd be old Labour. People here think the Democrats are fundamentally a labor movement, but they're not. They're Jeffersonian.

for the record, i wasn't accusing you of being a trumpist, i just a) saw an opportunity for a quick zing and b) think that isolationism isn't supportable when human civilisation as we know it is literally gonna end, and soon, unless superhuman levels of international collaboration start happening

I hope Abrams concentrates on voting rights work until she can run for governor again in 2022. Pundits have been talking about Georgia turning purple for a long time, but the only way I see that happening in the next few years is if she's at the top of the state ticket again.

Abrams' experience in state politics is deep but doesn't give her much of a story to tell about VP qualifications -- especially important for someone backing up an elderly presidential nominee.

xp, there is a recurring cliche about Iranians that they prioritise the opportunity to be martyred over all else - which at a low level leads to lousy analysis of strategic motivations and, at worst, feeds into the fantasy that the Iranian government is looking to build nuclear weapons to bring about the apocalypse.

ShariVari, Tuesday, 7 January 2020 22:27 (four years ago) link

should be noted that shia islamists use "martyrdom operations" less often than many other groups (secular leftist and arab nationalist parties in the lebanese civil war were more likely to employ the tactic than islamic jihad/hezbollah)
