A year of celebrations and concerts worldwide, especially around Germany, which is working very hard to make #BTHNV relevant for the facepalm era.

Beginning on 16 December 2019, the events will run until 17 December 2020, corresponding to the date of his baptism in 1770. (The composer's birthdate is uncertain.) There'll be more to come, so just post info here if you think it's interesting, I guess.

[q]'As trendy as the [#BTHVN] idea appears, it actually comes from the composer himself: That's the way he signed some of his works, shortening his name to Bthvn. "We thank BTHVN for this idea," added Hecker.'

The "symphony written by a computer" is true – it'll be unveiled at a performance in Bonn in April. #sorryBTHVN

Short preview clip from the symphony here. Ever the innovator, Beethoven seems to have conceived it as a work for theremin and drainpipe.

'Creating music together can be a tremendously joyful act, binding us together in times of celebration and times of hardship. When Beethoven incorporated Friedrich Schiller’s poem “Ode to Joy” into his Ninth Symphony, it was a radical call for equality, freedom, and brotherhood. All Together: A Global Ode to Joy[b] reimagines Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony as a 21st-century call for unity, justice, and empowerment.

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, visionary conductor Marin Alsop will lead performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on six continents with 10 renowned partner orchestras as part of a yearlong global project. Partners will reimagine the concert experience for their communities, presenting newly created music alongside the music of Beethoven and artists from their region. As part of each performance, “Ode to Joy” will be translated into a local language.'

So, it's BTHVN, but with young upstarts too! I believe they're promising rapping at one show.

The new translations will include some in English, and excitingly, in Chinese, Māori, Zulu, and Australian.*

  • (*Wish the Ode would be sung in an Indigenous language, but I'm currently assuming English judging by the blurbs. The interludes at the Sydney shows will celebrate Australia's First Nations and multiculturalism.)
The first concert is already done – in São Paulo, with a new text in Portuguese. So for the first time, I give you

[B]BRAZILIAN BEETHOVEN

Concerto Digital Osesp | Todos Juntos – Uma Ode Global à Alegria
Performance starts @ 1 hr 42 mins in video; time references are below
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVXJmy8X6Yg

Coral: I. Allegro ma non tropo, un poco maestoso [1817-24] :: (15 minutos)

Clarice ASSAD – Transição [Encomenda] [2019] :: (1 minuto)

Paulo COSTA LIMA – Cabinda: Nós Somos Pretos – Abertura Sinfônica, Op. 104: Ô Zaziê [Encomeda] [2015] :: (4 minutos)

Coral: II. Molto Vivace [1817-24] :: (13 minutos)

Clarice ASSAD – Transição: Alegria, Alegria [Encomenda] [2019] :: (4 minutos)

Coral: III. Adagio molto cantabile / IV. Finale [1817-24] :: (37 minutos)

The a capella song by the choir at the start, sung in the aisles, is listed as anonymous but shares a title with Castro Alves' famous poem about slavery. The Afro-Brazilian experience is the subject of the first interlude, which is as jarring as presumably it's intended to be. Clarice Assad's second (new) piece is quite majestic and fits well, I think. She's a Brazilian-American composer.

The 2nd of these concerts starts in London on April 16.
