RIP David Stern, his interview with Jim Rome about if the draft lottery was rigged is still wild. pic.twitter.com/BOtjAT7tkz

incredible

right along with that, i think ethan captured stern pretty well here:
https://theathletic.com/1475199/2020/01/01/to-my-pen-pal-david-stern-whom-ill-miss/

It started when I reached out for a story, roughly two years ago. I said in my email that he could call me at any hour, not expecting a response. One day, I checked my phone and saw I had a message. An annoyed-sounding voice said, “Hi Ethan, this is David Stern, calling you, at any hour. But this is obviously not a good hour.”

From the very beginning he was needling me. You didn’t take umbrage because the spirit of the message wasn’t to take you down. It was to spar for the joy of sparring. It’s such an understatement to state that David was perpetually ready for a fight. Saying that David Stern was ready for a fight is like saying that a fish is ready to swim. There was no other modality.

There’s a sense among many in the NBA that he did not like to be challenged. I think it’s the opposite. He craved it, thrived on it. An argument was an occasion he was perpetually ready to rise to... The commissioner would not abet defiance, but he would thrill to a challenge. The challenger might lose but earn respect along the way.

championship winning vibration (Spottie), Wednesday, 1 January 2020 23:53 (four years ago) link

Really hard to tell because he has that brace on. Didn’t seem like he had a ton of weight on it, maybe ok

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 1 January 2020 23:55 (four years ago) link

awful news about stern. selfishly i loved that he always seemed to have time for the media in retirement if someone came to him with an interesting inquest. i feel like he had a lot of good stories left to tell.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 2 January 2020 00:43 (four years ago) link

it’s a real shame we didn’t get an autobiography or a book length interview or etc

Clay, Thursday, 2 January 2020 01:02 (four years ago) link

I always begged Stern to write a book. He wouldn't do it. But if somebody writes a book about him, on page 1 should be the way that he stood tall against HIV/AIDS ignorance after the Magic announcement.

I have a soft spot for Rome because I've been listening to him since I was like 10. He doesn't have the underlying malevolence of a Gottlieb or a Travis, which I appreciate. And his whole format is so funny! I love listening to his weird callers read their insane takes.

I always appreciated that he used stuff like Iggy Pop and Ned's Atomic Dustbin for his drops. The state of music fandom in the sports world is pretty bleak.

I was always fascinated by how Roger Lodge was a regular guest on Rome’s tv show. Maybe he should be a guest on every show

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 2 January 2020 18:42 (four years ago) link

man, fair enough, I just don’t dig his style at all. Plus all the fat jokes. And the calls from “clones” uggggghh. The interviews are boring (I guess most national interviews are). would rather listen to Stephen A. if given a choice tbh (fp away)

sorry for shitting up ILH, hny all

Steve Ellington interviews are good, I’ll give him that

along with the somewhat more explicable tacko fall (lol boston), alex caruso aka "the accountant" is in the top ten guards for all star contention

jj barea is such a badass. 35 years old coming off a torn achilles, barely playing this season and he's just roasting the brooklyn centers on switches.

When Bam Adebayo blocked Joe Ingles' pass-fake shot a week back, he then absorbed it into his repetoire, Megaman style. pic.twitter.com/N3X4ExssKf

sad trombone

k3vin k., Friday, 3 January 2020 14:44 (four years ago) link

the other night on NBATV, Greg Anthony listed his all-decade Nuggs and somehow Will Barton made his starting five. Goldsberry's scoring chart for Denver reiterates how dumb this is (ftr, Anthony left off Faried, which seemed to me the most egregious oversight)

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Friday, 3 January 2020 15:12 (four years ago) link

The nuggets are kinda tough because a lot of the best level of play was in the first two and last two years of the decade.
