Stay With Me has the main hook lifted from something, it's exactly the same sound, something in the last few years I think, cannot for the life of me think what it is, but it's really familiar.

Not to be vague or anything but I may or may not be singing on a song coming out kind of soon

She was probably referring to this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JvP4URRlDE

It's Joe Agius's "solo" project, which consist of the same lineup as Hatchie except he's singing main vocals. So it's basically a Hatchie track.

I like it a lot. I realize that this stuff is probably super derivative but they do know how to write a song!

Looking forward to Hatchie's new stuff.

I kind of like it but also kind of think it goes into that Sixpence None the Richer song at the end

kinder, Friday, 30 October 2020 23:56 (three years ago) link

Even *more* Cocteau Twins-ish in the bass dept, I'm thinking.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 31 October 2020 03:38 (three years ago) link

I had to google who he even is (I guess I haven't ever heard of The Creases before?). This is v good, though.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 31 October 2020 04:36 (three years ago) link

he's hatchie's main guitarist/keyboardist & boyfriend, but yes he's formerly of the creases who are honestly not really worth knowing about. i saw them live once as an opening act and they were very forgettable

ufo, Saturday, 31 October 2020 06:01 (three years ago) link

I listened to the one album that's on Spotify. It was perfectly ok, but probably once was enough.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 31 October 2020 06:08 (three years ago) link

I feel like these guys use the perfect shoegaze guitar / bass settings for me. Just the right mix of Cocteau Twins, Lush and Slowdive (with a bit of Sundays mixed in). And live they sound even better. I'm taking about Hatchie/Joe A.

Pushing all those 90s feels for me.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 16:19 (two years ago) link

It feels a bit all over the place for me but it's got its moments.

I guess the melody/chorus could've been better, imo.

Yeah this is best part about it for sure. The piano sound in particular is a nice touch.

daavid, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 16:55 (two years ago) link

The madchester drums don't hurt either.

enochroot, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 17:43 (two years ago) link

Yes! I hadn't even payed attention to that. The first 35 seconds are very Happy Mondays. And then the guitar is full-on Shoegaze (a little on the noisier side this time).

daavid, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 20:15 (two years ago) link

There also this recent cover of Taylor Swift's August:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L_gKjFTVbY

Probably the Cocteau-est sounding thing she's done.

daavid, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 20:20 (two years ago) link

new song is decent but not her best, great guitar sound though

glad to hear her cover "august", it really needed someone to give it a dream-pop cover

really regretting deleting fb a while back now because without it i had no idea she was regularly (& safely!) playing local shows all through the pandemic, would have been nice to see

ufo, Wednesday, 15 September 2021 10:24 (two years ago) link

That piano is very Madchester, I love this. Also she seems a lot more at ease in this video than any of her previous ones.

Maybe we can get Wax to reunite for a Wax / Hatchie / Waxahatchee tour.

The new track is decent too! She's yet to release a bad song.

thoroughly excited for this new record based off these pre-release tracks -- "Quicksand" especially is so fucking good

Hatchie and Dan Nigro together is a dream come true tbh

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 22:51 (two years ago) link

i have a ticket to see her next month but i'm probably not going to go with the covid situation, i bought tickets right before news of omicron hit unfortunately

ufo, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 23:00 (two years ago) link

I saw her play live a few years back and she was excellent - very faithful to the studio versions but for me at least that was absolutely not a problem.

Tim F, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 23:33 (two years ago) link

yeah i've seen her before so it's no great loss

ufo, Thursday, 20 January 2022 01:44 (two years ago) link

Maybe my favorite live-sounding act (compared to how the sound on the record). They really crank up the shoegaze and it works beautifully.

Incredible song. That second chorus really is a moment.

Her album coming out the same day as the Real Lies one is going to end me. I'm thinking of taking the following week off work.

is there anything as good as Stay with Me, Sure or Secret on the new record?

her first album disappointed me a little bit, but she has about half a dozen or so songs that have developed a very special place in my heart

groovypanda, Friday, 22 April 2022 15:01 (one year ago) link

wow, love the sound on this. got some real NIN/industrial qualities folded into the ravey/housey/whooshy/Cocteau soup she was already serving up.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 22 April 2022 15:13 (one year ago) link

yeah "the rhythm" really goes for it with its industrial madchester thing

ufo, Saturday, 23 April 2022 23:27 (one year ago) link

idk if anything on here quite matches "stay with me" or "obsessed" but it's solid and maybe a little stronger than the debut overall, the new industrial edge to the guitars really helps

ufo, Sunday, 24 April 2022 00:38 (one year ago) link

I don’t really hear industrial - more Curve (especially Cuckoo), though I guess if you were casting around for a contemporary reference point then the last Halsey album might be one.

I feel like the melodies Hatchie concocted on the first EP were so indelible that it has placed her in something of a quandary ever since. She occasionally gets back to that level (“Obsessed” being the best example probably) but both the first album and now this one mostly have less memorable melodies - but the flipside is that that maybe liberates her to explore sonically, and I can’t help but nod approvingly at almost every choice she makes on this new one. It’s a lovely sounding album.

Tim F, Sunday, 24 April 2022 09:05 (one year ago) link

Should clarify that “less memorable melodies” is only relative - there’s some fantastic melodies on both albums.

Tim F, Sunday, 24 April 2022 09:11 (one year ago) link

it's really just "the rhythm" that's not far off nine inch nails in places but the harder-hitting guitars on it show up a fair amount elsewhere too
