I recently joined a group - Baltimore Old Photos - that seems to really attract off-topic memes for some reason. The people there don't stand for it and it always gets taken down, but that doesn't stop them from trying. Here's last night's contribution.

My tolerance for posts featuring original dialogue accredited to Pooh and Piglet is long-exhausted, and it is a strain not to tell close family members where to stick it when it inevitably pops up.

the best part about these "drinking from the hose" memes is that they always unintentionally make the old days sound fucking horrible

Parents used to have a bottle of Camp in the cupboard and to the best of my knowledge they never drank it. Mom might've used it for xakee flavouring maybe.

White bread and mutton i guess
for millennia before the invention of chicken tikka masala, britons mainly ate a thick brown slop composed of potatoes, assorted pig organs, and wool

we didn't wear helmets, our drinking water was laced with lead, our parents were emotionally distant or openly abusive, and we carry numerous unexamined traumas from which we have suffered our entire lives, and this is a good thing.

Weird nostalgia for bygone days of poverty is definitely a thing, but it doesn't usually center on the wide variety of good food you didn't eat because you were too poor or ignorant. That author sounds terrified of other people making choices.

it's weird that the 50s are held up as the golden age of shit trad british food bc it was probably the biggest decade of growth for e.g. chinese and indian restaurants in the UK, at least in % terms. even my fusty grandparents ate pasta occasionally, and anglo-indian food like kedgeree had been around for 150+ years
big difference not listed there is that french cuisine was p much the first and last word in fine cuisine back then. old british ppl fkn love french food/butter/meat/death
