that's digital foundry's thing, graphics tech focused reviews

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Friday, 20 December 2019 23:55 (four years ago) link

I dunno, I'd think the game of the year or whatever would be the game that rocks all specs *and* is a good game. Otherwise they might as well review screen savers.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 21 December 2019 00:03 (four years ago) link

I mean, there’s a reason that hardly anyone reads Windshields Monthly.

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Saturday, 21 December 2019 00:16 (four years ago) link

That's a sweeping generalization.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 21 December 2019 00:39 (four years ago) link

lol

"fine wiper speed control does nothing. we put it in there to fuck with people."

i'm holding off for HD windshields

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Saturday, 21 December 2019 07:26 (four years ago) link

The wipers we tested clocked in at a locked 30 fps, which is remarkable, given all they are tasked with doing. Factor in the clarity of the subsequent view through the windshield and such features as fluid propulsion, frequency adjustment and removable blades, and calling the Subaru Outback the Car of the Year is a no-brainer.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 21 December 2019 13:48 (four years ago) link

this is gonna go on for another ten posts isn't it

Started playing Breath of the Wild over the festive period. Have unlocked large amounts of the map and around 20 or 30 shrines.

Is it ok to search out one of the Divine Beasts yet or am I best just grinding for a while, upgrading armour and making elixirs? Whenever I head further afield from the initial areas I tend to get killed fairly quickly by some of the monsters I come up against, like those flying wizardry twats.

Also wondering where I can get ancient cores or shafts as only seem to find screws and gears, even from the couple of Guardians I've taken out with the shield parry?

groovypanda, Saturday, 4 January 2020 09:32 (four years ago) link

there's chests in shrines that have them i think? they probably drop from some type of guardian too just at a rarer rate

you can do the divine beasts whenever you want, they're not a challenge combat wise except maybe the desert one

ciderpress, Saturday, 4 January 2020 15:45 (four years ago) link

recall them dropping from the 'test of strength' or whatever shrine guardians or yeah in chests

Robert Corwen (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 4 January 2020 16:29 (four years ago) link

I'd go after a divine beast now because the skills you win can be extremely useful for exploring.

Robert Corwen (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 4 January 2020 16:30 (four years ago) link

Cheers both. Had assumed the Divine Beats quests would involve too powerful bad guys.

Checked my inventory earlier and noticed I already had two shafts so just need one more for the next Slate upgrade.

Fucking amazing game tho and my 9 year old is absolutely loving it too. It's the first adventure/RPG game he's ever got into as it's usually just Roblox or Rocket League/Mario Kart type games for him. It's quite a buzz to come down in the morning and instead of finding him on his tablet, he's on the Switch and can't wait to tell me he's completed another three shrines and tamed an awesome horse.

groovypanda, Saturday, 4 January 2020 21:00 (four years ago) link

Is it important to be good at fighting in BoW? because I'm awful at it. e.g. every time I try to backflip I just end up crouching.

lukas, Saturday, 4 January 2020 21:34 (four years ago) link

not really? you will have to fight a few bosses at some point but they're not that hard and pretty much all overworld encounters can be bypassed via stealth or various cheese strats

ciderpress, Saturday, 4 January 2020 22:15 (four years ago) link

cheese is good. thanks.

lukas, Saturday, 4 January 2020 23:22 (four years ago) link

using the magnetism ability to wave a chunk of metal around and whack enemies does a fair amount of damage is all i'm saying

ciderpress, Saturday, 4 January 2020 23:53 (four years ago) link

For music theory nerds. Last half of the video goes into the creator having fun making his own arrangement, but the first half is solid content.

FIRE EMBLEM

ciderpress, Thursday, 16 January 2020 15:51 (four years ago) link

Kentucky route zero is out in a couple weeks. Looks really interesting but some of the reviews make it seem like the whole game is basically a non-interactive cut scene. Anyone played?

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 24 January 2020 10:49 (four years ago) link

yes it's very good and has some really memorable bits of writing and visuals but yes it's a narrative adventure game aka "walking sim" where the gameplay is just walking around and examining/talking to things/people. somewhere in-between a visual novel and a point and click adventure game.

ciderpress, Friday, 24 January 2020 13:34 (four years ago) link

Ah, so the very-goodness negates the lack of gameplay?

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 24 January 2020 15:25 (four years ago) link

depends what you're looking for, i don't really know how to explain the appeal of these interactive story / visual novel type games if you haven't played one. lack of 'gameplay' isn't a flaw it's just not within the scope of what the game is doing

posts that define my existence
i chose the college i went to at least in part because they had coin-op Rush-N-Attack at the cafeteria

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 27 January 2020 17:28 (four years ago) link

Bad dudes is great/cheesy/addictive obvs, but imo the original arcade shinobi is one of the greatest games ever, and still holds up pretty well! Upgrading from the throwing stars to the blue lazer thingy then blasting through everyone is peak arcade game

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 27 January 2020 20:03 (four years ago) link

Not sure if driving games are especially popular here but would recommend Rush Rally 3. Dude who made it is ex-Sumo Digital, who did the Outrun 2 conversions, Sega All-Stars Racing, etc. Really tactile, arcadey handling (on beginner/intermediate level at least) and will certainly do me until M2 get given Sega Rally to convert.

I'm also in the grip of Puzzle Quest. The 'quest' part is the usual sub-Tolkien guff but the match-3 hook is strong.

Twelves, Friday, 31 January 2020 12:00 (four years ago) link

there's another puzzle quest game without the tolkien guff...

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 31 January 2020 22:25 (four years ago) link

Nhex, Saturday, 1 February 2020 00:50 (four years ago) link

puzzle quest has a version that's not Free to play. that seems important!!

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Saturday, 1 February 2020 01:38 (four years ago) link

that's its original form!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 1 February 2020 22:59 (four years ago) link

for sure! it's sad that it became a ftp thing for several years

Wonderful 101 kickstarter is up, seems like Platinum cut a deal with Nintendo over the IP rights
already smashed the (very low) Switch port goal, stretch goals for Steam and PS4 ports + others as yet unannounced

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 3 February 2020 20:34 (four years ago) link

not a fan of such a big company with private investors using kickstarter like this, it's still somewhat of a scam even if it's highly likely to work out fine for everyone

ciderpress, Monday, 3 February 2020 20:51 (four years ago) link

that said i will gladly buy and play a normal retail release of the game

ciderpress, Monday, 3 February 2020 20:55 (four years ago) link

It’s def just a marketing tactic

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Monday, 3 February 2020 20:56 (four years ago) link

agree with u, ciderpress. it's like tricking a bunch of people to pre-order, without even having a set release date.
i'll buy it after it releases

Seems kinda lame to me that Animal Crossing is reportedly only one island per Switch. That is, the whole family can play, but only in the same playground. I was under the impression that building your own world/town/island/whatever was one of the game's biggest draws?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 12:40 (four years ago) link

Well, to counterpoint that, the thing we as a family LOVED about New Leaf on 3DS was the fact we shared a town, same neighbours, shared progress, etc. My eldest was still very young at the time and getting letters from him in game was honestly really touching.

JimD, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 13:29 (four years ago) link

yeah that's the standard setup for the series
