when I put this on my boyfriend said it sounded like it was made in a lab to be exactly to my tastes, and he was right. I do wish the songwriting had a little more oomph to justify its long length but I think that would also be missing the point - it's meant to be textural and dreamy more than anything.

How legit is the story of their career as I've read it? They barely do press, they self-release everything and they've just toured hard to build a following and become successful by being so good at what they do. I'm sure I saw that they don't even have a manager.

it's all very pleasant sounding but nothing really stands out to me about it despite being very fond of this sort of sound.

“5am Waltz” is probably my favorite one from this year’s album. It’s short, beautiful on the right headphones and kind of sounds inspired by Boards of Canada.

I love this new album, more than the debut, and I've found it a real comfortable, relaxing listen - if this had came out a year earlier it would have probably been my lockdown go-to.

found out about this band on here, the new album is a superfun synthpop delight, love it. 'carmen' is a tune of 2021 for me.

oh..and 'beezle', 80's electropop ripped in 2021 never sounded so good.

Their Tiny Desk Concert kind of blew my mind. Something about the way they sound made it very hard to visualize them as a band playing in a room. I imagined that there were a lot more electronic or programmed elements, but no, they are just very skilled yet supremely mellow musicians.

cool, just listened to the intro track, supremely laid back, Air meets The Internet vibes. So polished, everyone finding the space in the groove, like you said, great musicians, completely on the same wavelength.

I'm digging back through their discography... Headroom is also pretty great! A different vibe given the variety of singers, and it's more upbeat, but tracks like "Morse Code" and "Again" are as strong as anything else they've done

Their show at the end of November at a large club in Austin is already sold out. I had no idea they were so popular. Pondering if I should buy a resale ticket.

I've lost count of the amount of times I thought a band was at the same level as similar niche, semi-underground artists, then I turn around and they're fucking huge (see also Khruangbin, Mitski, many more).

Idly speculating (ie hoping someone will do the research for me) how much a Spotify 'phenomenon' like 'Show Me How' - and attendant social media upticks etc - makes for a band? Like, is that enough to take your mum out for dinner, career-changing, life-changing or what?

Selling out one of the largest clubs in a city like Austin seems like a pretty big accomplishment for a band that is this chill and low key. Sunny Day Real Estate and Soccer Mommy both have shows coming up at the same club on subsequent weeks with tickets still on sale.

Was surprised to see they sold out the 930 Club in DC as well. Are they really exciting enough to see live?

I don't know if exciting is the right word, but that tiny desk video really changed the way I think about them. I had it in my mind that this was maybe someone's bedroom beats project, I didn't really visualize them as a full band playing these tunes, so seeing them perform their songs and realizing the level of skill that each of the members brought to it was really impressive.

They sounded really good on their tour last fall. Saw them at a somewhat smaller club but it was packed and the crowd was kinda overpowering in its enthusiasm. Julien Baker probably the only artist I've seen where there was as wide a gulf between the quietness of the tunes and the audience's response.
