I'm ecstatic right now.

I know it "means" shit.

Fuck you if you're not happy.

he will have a painting commissioned of his asshole and have it sent to everybody in Congress

it's a day we never thought would come and it's here.

Trump has media lackeys he doesn't have to pay to carry his water for him, plus he has a massive war chest to buy media ads, making his 'case' which almost completely lacks a factual basis, but consists mostly on discrediting or denying every scrap of evidence, every word of testimony, and every Democrat in Congress as biased or malignantly motivated. Plus many total mischaracterizations of the evidence, endlessly repeated.

So, it is better to tune out the majority of it as nothing new. The only important part will be how the Senate rules get written and McConnell apparently can't ram through the exact rules he most wants enacted, so the real action will take place between him and Schumer. Uh, mmm, hurrah??

A is for (Aimless), Thursday, 19 December 2019 02:00 (four years ago) link

I'm happy because he's got to be so pissed. And now what will the GOP whine about, now that it's done and can't be undone?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 19 December 2019 02:00 (four years ago) link

oh fuck off Tulsi

“I am standing in the center and have decided to vote 'Present.' I could not in good conscience vote against impeachment because I believe President Trump is guilty of wrongdoing," Gabbard said in the statement. “I also could not in good conscience vote for impeachment because removal of a sitting President must not be the culmination of a partisan process, fueled by tribal animosities that have so gravely divided our country.”

Bublé in the changer, I wish I was dead (Neanderthal), Thursday, 19 December 2019 02:03 (four years ago) link

Honestly asking: will anything of consequence happen because of this

Simon H., Thursday, 19 December 2019 02:05 (four years ago) link

xpost what a brave stand, voting "present" when you know the result is a foregone conclusion anyway

Bublé in the changer, I wish I was dead (Neanderthal), Thursday, 19 December 2019 02:05 (four years ago) link

It's inspired a bunch of activists in South Florida I know for another round of voter registration.

So fuck off anyone who sez this was an empty gesture.

(I'm not addressing you, Simon).

This is meaningful and a good thing. More importantly it was the right thing.

Posited somewhere that that impeachment may give the usual suspects (Collins, lol, Mitt, double lol) some cover to say they don't want him removed, but can't absolve him without hearing from important witnesses like Bolton. Which likely would further not be good for his defense, not that it will nudge the needles of these psychos.

i'll be ecstatic when I can afford chemotherapy

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 December 2019 02:11 (four years ago) link

this will make Republicans own the acquittal. drive up our own "get out the vote" initiative and get the turnout where it needs to be for 2020. fundraise off of this shit.

Bublé in the changer, I wish I was dead (Neanderthal), Thursday, 19 December 2019 02:11 (four years ago) link

I like the headlines:

“Trump Impeached for Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress” (NYT)

and especially “TRUMP IMPEACHED:
Donald J. Trump is the third U.S. president to receive that sanction; he faces a trial in the Senate” (WP)

Dan S, Thursday, 19 December 2019 02:12 (four years ago) link

will anything of consequence happen because of this

not exactly, but if the democratic party could not bring itself to do this small thing, it really jettisoned any claim to representing reality.

we can at least now pretend that some people care about things rather than giving up entirely

Tulsi is just keeping her options open. There's more to life than being a member of Congress. There's a tremendous amount of good she could be doing in the world of lobbying, sitting on corporate boards, or becoming a media personality and motivational speaker, you know. Don't forget, she served her country in the military, so she is geared toward selfless national service.

I knew it! Pelosi just said they weren’t going to hand over the impeachment articles until there was a fair trial set out. This could go on for monnnnnnnthhhhsssssss.

I'm hoping not

Dan S, Thursday, 19 December 2019 02:58 (four years ago) link

xps to j. - yeah someone I know explained it like this:

"Pelosi cannily announces Democrats won’t refer the adopted articles of impeachment to the Senate until the House learns what the trial rules will be. This allows more time to build political pressure against the most vulnerable Republican senators so that four of them cave and join the 47 Democrats in voting for fair rules."

Dan S, Thursday, 19 December 2019 04:33 (four years ago) link

lol AOC already bodied Tulsi to NY reporters, saying "to not take a stand one way or another in a day of such grave consequence to this country is quite difficult. We’re here to lead.”

“We did what we could Elijah. We passed the articles of impeachment. The president is impeached”

Dan S, Thursday, 19 December 2019 05:43 (four years ago) link

I was in transit for about three hours today & was listening to the back and forth b/w the house reps, and the fucking republican gaslighting over and over and over and over again made it really hard not to swerve into oncoming traffic. It's nice that he has this pockmark on his 'official legacy,' but CHRIST, this is really where we're at and it is chilling.

House impeachment, in this case, is the equivalent of a verbal warning for a felony.

Legacy of Banality (Pillbox), Thursday, 19 December 2019 06:23 (four years ago) link

whoa

can confirm @JakeSherman @apalmerdc scoop: Rep. Mark Meadows, one of Pres. Trump's confidants, will not seek reelection and expects to work closely with the president on the 2020 campaign, likely as a top surrogate/adviser, exact role TBD, per several ppl briefed on the talks
