you’ve been talking about movies on the internet for like 15 years now, come on

anyway I’m sure I’ll forget that once I actually get around to seeing this

I...liked this! Ridiculous, overstuffed, fan-servicey and epic at the best of times ( Abrams grew a sense of scale that extends beyond a couple of shots!). Right now it's my fave of the new 3.

Everybody getting all crestfallen about the absence of Jar Jar can take heart that there's still plenty of Boss Nass in this film, including an entire dance sequence set to the B-Boys' 'Sure Shot' (as is the Abrams way).

I know it's evoked on occasion, but it still needs to be explicitly pointed out now and again: this movie was directed by someone who put a Beastie Boys song in each of the Star Trek movies he directed. That actually happened.

SW film goes reactionary w/ f*n s*rvice, film at 11 (god what a hideous term)

Morbs it'll fascinate you to (perhaps) learn that "fan service" didn't originally mean "stuff fans want" it specifically meant "pointless T&A in anime"

i don't recognize that distinction

I guess at the end of the day fanservice comes down to how you like your tomatoes.

Call me old fashioned, but there's nothing I relish like a hot tomata'!

Ok so... it's Abrams. But...based on some of the press I was pleasantly surprised.

I mean...I cannot stan for this the way I did TLJ. It has a solid first half but gets really messy in the second. He stuffs too much in there and some of it doesn't land.

But...it hit enough right notes for me that I enjoyed it. Definitely a dumber SW movie than the one before but hey the OG trilogy was often p dumb too.

I did like some of the new mythos

Bublé in the changer, I wish I was dead (Neanderthal), Friday, 20 December 2019 05:45 (four years ago) link

I thought it was dire.

Would rank it with Episodes I to III

groovypanda, Friday, 20 December 2019 18:38 (four years ago) link

Reading this recap by the NY Times of how their film critics rated each of the Star Wars episodes from 1-9, I was bowled over to read how much A.O. Scott loved "Revenge of the Sith":

"...by far the best film in the more recent trilogy, and also the best of the four episodes Mr. Lucas has directed."

"The sheer beauty, energy and visual coherence of 'Revenge of the Sith' is nothing short of breathtaking.."

And this after he panned "Attack of the Clones"!

o. nate, Saturday, 21 December 2019 01:39 (four years ago) link

As noted somewhere upthread, I've only seen the prequels once in the theater, but my perception at the time was that each improved slightly upon the one before. I am somewhat curious to see how they'd fare a second time around.

i was so hungry that i ate a hole cake entirely to myself (Old Lunch), Saturday, 21 December 2019 01:57 (four years ago) link

that's my recollection too but I also saw them out of order; I skipped Attack of the Clones completely and though Sith was a step up from Phantom Menace. I saw Clones several years later and liked about half of it and found the other half dreadfully boring. But not as cringe inducing as Phantom.

akm, Saturday, 21 December 2019 02:28 (four years ago) link

my memory is that the most cringe-inducing bits got worse in 2 and then 3 but on average the films improved

ciderpress, Saturday, 21 December 2019 02:34 (four years ago) link

I actually like RotS. But can't ride for the two prior

Bublé in the changer, I wish I was dead (Neanderthal), Saturday, 21 December 2019 03:26 (four years ago) link

It's better if you imagine both Anakin and Padme were being puppeteered by Palpatine and that's why they seemed like zombies

Bublé in the changer, I wish I was dead (Neanderthal), Saturday, 21 December 2019 03:28 (four years ago) link

Spoiler alert: this movie was rad.

oh thank god disney have seen sense because the main issues with this film were definitely that a) it was not long enough and b) there should have been even more callbacks to the previous movies
