"Well, if I'm not, I'm acing my Turing Test."

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 23:31 (four years ago) link

Oh and I'm not a fan of this character but another highlight of the season, described in two words: bloody smile.

"Thank you"

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 23:32 (four years ago) link

Finished up last night. I liked the stuff on Illus, but the belter, Mars and UN election subplots were pretty weak. She has a cool voice, but Shohreh Aghdashloo is just not a good line reader. And her husband was such a weird, sort-of condescending character. Zero ZERO chemistry with those two.

Other thoughts:
I can’t believe they didn’t throw Murtry off that bridge to “fall until he died.” Chekhov’s bridge!

I haven’t read the books, but it seems like Miller and then Dr Okoye both experienced some kind of interactions with some kind of super AI(s)? Not sure how you should film stuff like that, but in SF books, that’s often some of the most thrilling material. On this show, it seemed kinda vague and they didn’t really discuss it.

Amos is still the MVP. Bobby was also good in parts but I didn’t really understand her moral journey.

Still looking forward to the next season!

On ep 6 or so and the Ilus plot is really feeling like a 3- or 4-episode story stretched out to season length

Simon H., Friday, 20 December 2019 17:41 (four years ago) link

I'd have loved for this to be another bifurcated season, s3-style. I thought that was a great format for them.

Simon H., Friday, 20 December 2019 17:43 (four years ago) link

Simon: that's the experience of reading book 4 (Cibola Burn), which covers the Ilus plot. The books are split between 8 (and soon 9) novels considered "obligatory", and 8 (soon 10?) "optional" novellas restricted to world building and character background. The parts of book 4 that advance the series arc are limited; one could safely cntl-F for "Miller" to find them. Otherwise, its Western-genre gold rush town novella, padded to novel status with a litany of plagues, biological descriptions from Elvi, etc.

Contrary, I thought the S4 Belter arc was the best of the 4. David Strathairn, Cara Gee, and (now) Keon Alexander are the best actors left in the cast, and this arc elegantly pulls forward/reshapes Nemesis Games background, though I thought the last scene showed too many cards.

raisin d'etre (Sanpaku), Friday, 20 December 2019 18:53 (four years ago) link

I kind of figured they do they’d do the dual plot arc thing this season due to the slow book 4, but I think they want to give us maximum Marco next season

Finished S4 and then started binging Lost In Space S2 on Netflix. It is hilarious how one show is basically the adult version of the other

- how did we get here? dangerous alien precursor technology we don't understand
- what is happening to us? a series of discrete crises, almost like chapters in a story
- why? because alien planet OK

then they diverge

- what can we say on tv? (LIS: not even "asshole")
- who is having sex? (LIS: no one, I don't think mom and dad even kiss)
- what are the stakes? (LIS: they don't even kill the NPCs)
- do we even get to punch the smarmy awful villain in the face? (LIS: nope)

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 25 December 2019 15:49 (four years ago) link

Just parachute Amos into LIS to take care of business.

one month passes...

i haven't seen S4 yet nor finished S3 but had one of the biggest lols in a show in awhile when Amos was hanging out with the rescued little tykes from Doc Strickland's Io project, turns to the TV to see the protomolecule thing emerging from the atmosphere of Venus, and says "What...the fuck...is that?"

top-tier show, shockingly consistent in terms of quality.

Finally finished S4 - really excellent. But now we have to wait for next season which is not excellent :(

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 7 March 2020 20:15 (four years ago) link

I got a little bored with the "trapped in alien cave" story line that just had manufactured crises until the other characters' plot lines could catch up with their timeline. Very excited for the Bobbie-Chrisjen development.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Sunday, 8 March 2020 15:15 (four years ago) link

otm, bobbie/chrisjen is the best outcome of the whole thing :D

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 8 March 2020 17:00 (four years ago) link

Bobbie's my favourte character I think (find Chisjen a bit annoying though).

Also Frankie Adams was looking amazing this season.

it’s vmnic for me to have not seen this yet. Insane, even. it just came out at such a bad time of year. but also I’ve been putting it off for some reason, not sure why

Finally watching this and I’m on E3. I love it. I have completely come around on Alex. Everybody’s great. Amos continues to rule. “Does this mean we’re not fucking?” Loved Bobbi wrecking shop in her nephew’s cookhouse. Feel for the corner she’s in. Love that they’re on planets now. Love unlocking the billion-year-old tech by snapping a root.

Ain't nothing compared to what will be happening in s5

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Friday, 1 May 2020 00:59 (three years ago) link

"A" plot adapts the (by consensus) weakest book in the series. Burn Gorman plays to type, the red shirt death counter ticks up, but it all feels stakeless compared to prior seasons.

disagree with this. once the settlement is overwhelmed by events ca. ep 5 it starts getting really good. and the stories unfolding in orbit above them are fantastic as well. i love all the problem-solving. i could watch nothing but people on this show figure shit out.

Of the three "B" plots, "OPA self-policing" is good (esp. Inaros casting);

ehhhh. is it? they all feel like they’re in a soundstage somewhere else. not doing much. lotta jibber jabber.

"Bobbie Breaks Bad" is rote,

agreed. however bobbie continues to have my undying love forever.

and the "UN West Wing" plot is dire (Pres. Roslin couldn't save it).

yeah not feeling this one either. something feels not quite joined up but i’m too tired to pinpoint it

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 May 2020 21:36 (three years ago) link

i don't even care what he's jibber jabbering about, i just want more strathairn

mookieproof, Friday, 1 May 2020 21:53 (three years ago) link

more straithairn is always better!

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 May 2020 21:56 (three years ago) link

his actions in the finale didn't make much sense to me, but whattayagonnado

mookieproof, Friday, 1 May 2020 22:00 (three years ago) link

xp: I meant "stakeless" in the sense that it wasn't a race to save billions on Earth in 1st half S2 or save Mars in 1st half S3 or all of humanity in 2nd half S3. The people at risk were a couple hundred (at most) in the Ilus system, which happened to include the crew.

mookieproof, Sunday, 3 May 2020 02:18 (three years ago) link

well now i have watched the finale :/

i am pleased that we got a bit of bad-ass straithairn action. what specifically are you thinking about that didn’t add up mookie?

i want a new season like, yesterday obv

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 3 May 2020 10:25 (three years ago) link

why board marco's ship, rather than just shooting it? and why surrender rather than taking marco with you?

mookieproof, Sunday, 3 May 2020 20:24 (three years ago) link

i expect he wanted to bring marco in alive to face justice and reap the institutional rewards for it. he’s always been the one saying that belters need to show they respect the rule of law and that’s how they’ll eventually win equal power with the inners.

I expect Avasarala will provide profane fan service once removed from family and immediate superiors, and with her progressive exasperation.

Yes, this has been great

I think I might have blinked and missed the closing shot, but apparently the protomolecule monster has stowed away on the side of the Rocinante.

has been bugging me ever since

envisaging the planet venus sporting a huge hat made of protomolecule tipped at an irritating angle

Just blew through all four seasons of this in the past two weeks. I figured I would like it but I totally loved it. There are very few moments that make me feel like this was filmed in a studio and not in space, the production is great. I'm such a nerd for all the scientific limitations, like ship maneuverability or time delay when receiving information. Sci-fi TV shows usually shy away from technical explanation but they do a good job weaving it in without being too expository imo. Great balance of character development and story. The acting is the only place where this sometimes falls down. Even by S4 the actors for Holden and Alex can't stand up to the better actors on the show though Alex's terrible accent and weird line delivery kind of grew on me

Might read the books next with such a long wait for S5

Vinnie, Friday, 29 May 2020 00:25 (three years ago) link

I did that after a prior season. I think I got into a rhythm and took out every single one over a month!

Appears there are multiple allegations against Cas Anvar being investigated at the moment

chonky floof (groovypanda), Friday, 26 June 2020 17:37 (three years ago) link

Sounds like:

So one of the core cast of #TheExpanse has been accused of sexual misconduct. We immediately passed these serious accusations onto the studio, Alcon. Alcon has engaged an independent firm to investigate this matter and takes these allegations very seriously.
