the smart money is on either noise or lo-fi indie

imago, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 20:36 (four years ago) link

It’s fuzzy, shoegazy goodness. Not really metal, but definitely heavy at times.

Skrot Montague, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 20:55 (four years ago) link

Speaking of lo-fi indie, this 2nd wave Norwegian BM worship ritual, wrought by a lonesome Ukrainian, comes with a corny indie fuxxor ballad towards the end:

Këkht Aräkh - Night & Love

Dude calls himself Crying Orc and provides the following lyrical teaser on his Bandcamp:

Night is spreading her veil all over
Spirit is arisen permeating every breath
Love comes through...
We are all bonded here...
Just about to see how beautiful we are

Andvaka - Andvana

Premise: Sigur Rós was a funeral doom band all along.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 18 December 2019 01:36 (four years ago) link

Re: Andvaka - I couldn't be more intrigued by that description. Will check out pronto.

Skrot Montague, Wednesday, 18 December 2019 16:00 (four years ago) link

Same here tbh!

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 18 December 2019 16:13 (four years ago) link

It's mild clickbait as the vocalist sounds nothing like Jónsi but the horizonless sense of space, the hymnic flange and the post-doom (rather than rock) elements all kind of point towards their countrymen Sigur Rós. It'll definitely make my ballot.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 18 December 2019 16:36 (four years ago) link

Bandcamp says it came out in ‘16.

beard papa, Thursday, 19 December 2019 02:06 (four years ago) link

Really? The band itself didn't exist before this year: 'ANDVAKA is founded in 2019 in Reykjavík Iceland.'

Only the trvest funeral doomers were dead when they recorded their music.

I didn't find anything independently that hasn't been nominated already but wow, it was a very good year. Lots of excellent stuff to dig into!

pomenitul, Monday, 23 December 2019 02:10 (four years ago) link

well I see both are black metal to a degree so I guess I will seek both out

Bublé in the changer, I wish I was dead (Neanderthal), Monday, 23 December 2019 02:11 (four years ago) link

Former is raw ritual black with guttural vocals, latter plays with microtones. Both are atonal-adjacent. Oh, and Cthonica are from Venezuela, which may or may not be relevant to you (it was my first time hearing a metal band from there).

We're already over 200 up on last year, dunno how many more there are to nom!

I would like to note that this year's Lacuna Coil is surprisingly good, having not cared for/paid them much mind before.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 01:37 (four years ago) link

At this point part of me wants to turn in a one-line ballot for Caligula, that record snuck up on me but it kills me every time now.
