Trump has like 92% GOP approval, nobody's ditching him

frogbs, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 18:29 (four years ago) link

Republicans of conscience are like boy scouts who disdain camping and tying knots. Adoption of that particular identity is at odds with your stated goals/ideology.

truly astounding (or not at all) that Devin Nunes got busted playing footsie w Lev Parnas, Giuliani et al and Dems are getting backfooted on questions of wrongdoing as to how, exactly, they find out

"And who were you listening in on, Mr. Police Officer, when you learned this murder was taking place?"

OK so Ukraine, known 2016 election meddlers, is supposed to be the ones that conduct your super important investigation into the Bidens?

Martialarts Ali (Leee), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:29 (four years ago) link

Clearly they know how to get stuff done!

Children Devouring Their Cronuts (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:31 (four years ago) link

If somebody dreamt up what T did I think people might just dismiss it as far fetched. It's like an extended Mr magoo cartoon or something. JUst a total bungle that ought to just make him look like an idiot except it has obvious repercussions in terms of real world protocols.
What he was looking for initially outside of the visible act of showing that Ukraine were supposed to be going along with things willingly is a total fiction based on a misunderstanding of current information technology.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:49 (four years ago) link

how long would it take him to write something that long?

Exclamation points!

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:54 (four years ago) link

He just yelled at some poor staffer taking dictation for an hour and then a small team turned it into a letter.

Lactose Shaolin Wanker (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:55 (four years ago) link

Charming. I wonder who actually wrote the bulk of the letter before he dipped his dick in fingerpaint and slapped it at random across the pages.

Children Devouring Their Cronuts (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:56 (four years ago) link

Again, this is precisely how a normal and functional person proclaims his innocence.

well it's on the record now.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 20:04 (four years ago) link

That letter does capture the authentic voice of our president. It is the voice that lives inside his head all day every day. That is such a scary thought that I spend as little time thinking it as I humanly can.

I can't imagine he has read an entire book from start to finish in decades, including those he published under his own name.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 20:09 (four years ago) link

whoever wrote that has a sick, disturbing, and nauseating fetish for triple adjectives

rob, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 20:10 (four years ago) link

Hey, you know what's maybe the grossest and most offensive thing about that letter? The goddamn POTUS put more effort into drafting a pissy litany of grievances than he has into three cumulative years of governing the fucking country.

Children Devouring Their Cronuts (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 20:10 (four years ago) link

it may not be comforting to imagine effortfulness on his part

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 20:11 (four years ago) link

At the very least it underscores just how much the idea of getting impeached gets under his skin. He could just stay silent (hah) wait until the senate shit is done, then write an in-your-face screed (which he will anyway), but going full-bore like that means he's bristling at getting (another) asterisk attached to his name.

Does Steele's friendship with Ivanka undermine his credibility? Does t feel this way about any of his daughter's other friends. Is it just jealousy?

I can't imagine he has read an entire book from start to finish in decades, including those he published under his own name.

Based on his interviews, correspondence and biographical profiles over the last four decades, All Quiet On The Western Front is either the last book he read, or the only book he has ever read.

xpost President Porcelaincracker

Yeah yeah, I know, it's definitely a good thing that he's a pathologically lazy and incurious and ineffectual fleshpile. It's just, y'know, a goddamn travesty that someone who fits that description has the entire goddamn country wrapped around his tiny little finger.

Children Devouring Their Cronuts (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 20:22 (four years ago) link

I’d love to see a letter back from Pelosi that reads in its entirety:

“Mr. President, it is not the ‘Democrat’ Party. The word is Democratic.

Good day, sir.”

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link

Memo to Nancy Pelosi. Drop the "Good day, sir." It's petulant. Use "I continue to pray for you every day" instead. He hates that.

he is definitely getting impeached tomorrow but who even cares at this point. though it's kind of nice to know that he's freaked out about it, despite the practially non-zero chance the senate will do a thing about this.

akm, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 21:51 (four years ago) link

Why is it journalistic convention to refer to the language in texts like Trump's letter as "scathing"? Doesn't that imply rhetorical effectiveness?

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 21:58 (four years ago) link

the headline I'm seeing is "Trump sends fiery letter to Pelosi" which is just lmao

amazing that after 4 years of this the media either has no clue how to cover Trump or just can't be bothered to do it properly, like the way they constantly write articles that start with "The White House is considering blah blah blah" when its abundantly clear that "we're looking into it" is Trumpspeak for "I have no idea what you're talking about"

frogbs, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 22:01 (four years ago) link

Has there been even one instance in this administration of "we're going to be looking into it" where "it" clearly got looked into?

henry s, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 22:05 (four years ago) link

they're looking into that

Why are you still of the opinion that there was only a point to impeachment if removal was guaranteed?

100 Percent That Grinch (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 22:13 (four years ago) link

Why is it journalistic convention... Doesn't that imply rhetorical effectiveness?

The journalistic convention being followed here is that, no matter what, the president must be regarded as as a functioning, capable human being. The Trump they are referring to there not the real Trump, but America's imaginary friend.

"Trump sends fieryfarty letter to Pelosi"

TBF he "won" 306 but there were 2 faithless electors who voted for John Kasich & Ron Paul instead.

oncle rasélonguebite (crüt), Wednesday, 18 December 2019 00:51 (four years ago) link

Yes, but by the same rule, Clinton won 232. There's no way he won 306 and she won 227.

The Dems suck at 'messaging.' It comes from catering to their 'centrist' caucus.
