Oddly enough have just had my friend S4tind3r on the interweb mail asking me to compare the price of agnes b. sandals in London with the $250 they cost in NYC. She is to hang on to her cash and get them here. Crisis averted!

the pinefox (the pinefox), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

there is pretty much nowhere to buy shoes in DC that's not either very, very expensive (but very, very limited selection & mostly conservative) or nine west. I like those Tara Subkoff easy spirits though. some of the miss sixty at the zappos site are on major sale and only about $70, so.. hmm

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 17:21 (seventeen years ago) link

DC people, there's a DSW in Pentagon Row! I know, Pentagon Row is kind of gross, but you can walk there from the Pentagon City Metro stop, right? if you're in an affordable-shoe-coveting pinch.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 17:26 (seventeen years ago) link

also, yay, Ally bought the pretty shoes!

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I used to live at 9 West 46th St.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

do you have to buy shoes that look like that once every two months or something? The middle ones are utterly disgusting btw.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

the middle ones are my personal fave actually.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:29 (seventeen years ago) link

you are talking to a person who has basically decided that the only non-trainers he needs to buy from now on, with the possible exception of fancy dressemup footwear, are black doc martens, because they fall apart less often than other shoes, and I refuse to wear a brown belt.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

The middle ones look like something a Republican 20-something would wear to work. After work he puts on his casual loafers and his striped shirt, collar flipped, and goes to the Front Page. V. not sexy.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd get the middle ones! They're great!

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't really like shoes with laces to be totally honest.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

if any of them, the 3rd. first one is gawdawful.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

The 3rd pair.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah 3rd is best out of those choices.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

wait I thought you hated slip-ons. now it's lace-ups?

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I hate velcro.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, 3rd pair

xpost - unfortunately I have no luck at DSW, I went and they didn't have my size (10) in anything cool

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess this is as good a thread as any to ask what Ugg boots are and why they are so bad and hated.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:01 (seventeen years ago) link

dude whats the matter with brown belts/shoes, tom?

john, come to georgetown - ill show you.

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, I've been told I can also find out in Lincoln Park -- but being fairly blind to fashion in general puts me at a distinct disadvantage here.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:12 (seventeen years ago) link

RYUICHI SAKAMOTO - NEW BALANCE

JW (ex machina), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I think European tastes are different - the middle pair is the only one that I would choose. It's hard to tell when you can't see how thinck the sole might be, though.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:23 (seventeen years ago) link

ally is right -- the 2d pair are FUGLY as fuck.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:24 (seventeen years ago) link

dude whats the matter with brown belts/shoes, tom?

I don't think anything is wrong with it, but I don't wear brown leather products, either. Black is slightly better, and easier to coordinate with other colors, and sometimes having limited fashion options is a blessing. Get yourself a couple pair of black shoes, a couple sturdy black belts, and go to work worry-free for years to come.

ally is right -- the 2d pair are FUGLY as fuck.

It's all the little holes. Too... I dunno... fancy pants or something. Like it's trying to be a doily.

sinful caesar sipped his snifter (kenan), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Not a doily - a *brogue*!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Whatever. Classic? Maybe. Silly? Yeah, kind of. It goes back to the days when being able to punch a bunch of holes in leather was really impressive.

sinful caesar sipped his snifter (kenan), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't remember those days! Prada have some exceptional men's shoes this seaon.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm a big fan of wingtips/brogues, actually.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Tom, the first pair are shit-kickers masquerading as a men's dress shoe. Buy it if you MUST (if you visit, say, construction sites as a consultant and you need something heavier than a fine-soled dress shoe -- but I don't think you do this), or if Docs are your personal calling card, or if you're still in high school. Otherwise, buy a GROWN-UP DRESS SHOE.

Which brings us to #2 and #3, where it's really a matter of taste. I think you could do either, but maybe #3 is more consistent with your overall style and existing wardrobe? You might like a certain pair of shoes but it's much less helpful if they don't GO with anything.

Brogues might be more of a UK thing than a US one? I back 'em.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:46 (seventeen years ago) link

They definitely would like cold ass stupid with Tom's current wardrobe. Unless you plan to upgrade yr fashion, Tom, you need to stick with #3 if you get any of those shoes at all.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

LOOK LIKE cold ass stupid, I mean. Gah end of day come quickly

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:48 (seventeen years ago) link

docs can get away with it b/c they are docs. any other kinda shoe that tried that kind of thing would look dumb (HELLO SKETCHERS!!)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Look Tom just because I bought wingtips at a Baltimore thrift store the day of your wedding doesn't mean they're suddenly IN now, GAWD.

I used to have a pair of Sketchers' engineer boots. They fell apart after a year.

I say #3, too.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 21:41 (seventeen years ago) link

oh and btw, i went to payless today and found NOTHING good. ohwell. and found nothing good in all the other shoestores i went into. i'm going to have to stop looking and then good shoes will come. but anyway, i spent money on a usb/sata drive enclosure today instead, which is totally, like, the opposite of blue wedge sandals (but still cool!).

one other thing: do nice sandals for men even exist?? (I am looking for a friend, who will probably end up in something godawful anyway. I have seen nothing nice.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 21:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Tracer are you trying to take credit for PAUL EATER'S procurement? I believe it is he who deserves the credit for what were, in fact, great shoes.

Inspired by this shoe thread, I stopped by Daisy Too or whatever the hell it is called (the shoe part in back has a different name! But it is the same shop so WTF?). A pair of kelly green pumps I had admired quite a while back--but at whose price I blanched--was on sale for 75% off! 75%!!! So I bought them, despite the fact they are too big. I plan to fix that with some inserts and heel-sticker thingies.

OKAY OKAY PEOPLE
I GOT THE BOTTOM ONES
I AM SORRY I EVER EVEN BROUGHT UP THE WINGTIPS
THEY SEEMED ENTERTAININGLY DEVIANT IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT NO OTHER IT PEOPLE WEAR SUCH SILLINESS ON THEIR FEET
ALSO WTF IS WITH KENNETH COLE AND DOC MARTENS CONVERGING ON A SIMILAR STYLE AND PRICE POINT
ARE THESE THE END TIMES

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 22:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I haven't seen the pics but as a rule I love the wingtips.

Thank you for the Ryuichi S. video! It made me smile:)

While we are on the subject, should I go for the new-fangled no-laces slip-on Converse, or stick with the old stand-bys?

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:05 (seventeen years ago) link

i want some shoes that combine the best qualities of a jet engine, a merino wool sweater, and a giant fern.

just because obviously shoe designers are randomly splicing away, so why not. it's like fish-tomatoes, for your feet.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually the brogue and/or wingtip thing is a coming trend for A/W 06.

I agree with Lauren about the whole sandals issue, ugh ugh ugh other people's gnarly toes.

Mary, those slip-on Converse look even better in a grey high-top. Nick's girlfriend H has a lovely pair.
