I found it hilarious how insanely petty it was, like what a fascinating little fact about the inventiveness of a director whose first feature showed a promising creative voice, offered up by someone who had a chance to marvel at that inventiveness even earlier. And what it says about Johnson that he takes the opportunity to share that admiration in a concise anecdote rather than just RT a plug and move on... just met by a mentality that can't comprehend generosity or creativity as concepts. Whose adoration (?) of Star Wars has not managed to impart any notions of the value of kindness and tolerance from the text, or of interest in or appreciation for clever solutions to filmmaking challenges, that combine vision with hands-on craft. Remembered my post from the other day, and thought how aptly this illustrated the ineffectual nature of those gnat-bite responses.

Brick is the only other RJ movie I’ve seen (besides TLJ); the bonus disc is great, he was really inventive in making use of limited resources to get interesting shots, etc.

Lakers are def playing better than I thought they would be at this point. They’re doing it with good defense and relying heavily on their two stars, not sure how sustainable the latter is though.

Watched Last Jedi today and it was pretty good(!) So that's probably my favorite now outside of the original three.

I was in the right mood and the casino planet stuff was good! I didn’t pay enough attention to the myriad of bourgeois alien hijinks before.

Small weird thing but the critique of last Jedi being about “the friends aren’t together on an adventure” is some Care Bears level garbage of storytelling needs

Everything outside of the Rey/Kylo/Luke stuff just seems absurd and corny to me. I'm going to give this movie one more chance before seeing the new one, maybe I'll warm up to it.

The thing that bothers me the most about TLJ is the dumb vehicles - in a world full of all kinds of ships of all sizes capable of traveling at incredible speed and defying gravity, two major scenes were built around slow-ass bombers and those stupid skid machines that seemed to exist only for the red surface visuals.

I’ve also wondered for years why snow speeders have those harpoon guns on the back with a dedicated operator because wtf purpose could those possible serve other than suddenly being useful for tripping ATATs

The whole bomber intro was incredibly dumb for a variety of reasons, and it sets up most of the dumb stuff that follows.

Including the slow-speed pursuit / “we’re running out of fuel” / “let’s sneak away to that nearby planet”

I also think the entire casino planet plotline (up to & including the confrontation with Phasma) is reeeeeally bad and should have been excised

Many xps, the harpoons are tow cables, for towing things. That does at least make a little more sense than the styluses hanging from the TLJ salt-speeders.

The casino planet could definitely been trimmed down. I liked Benicio though--sometimes I think I'm the only one who did. I just like my Galaxy full of dodgy weirdos, I guess.

Xp I dont hate TLJ but Benicio was far & away my favorite part, I was very disappointed when he left the story

A lot of goofy CGI aliens mixed with some facile points about space capitalism and Finn's constant bumbling.

you went looking for subtlety in THIS franchise?

though actually, compared to how symbolism and political messages were handled when Lucas ran the show, the short capitalism bit wasn't really that over the top, comparatively speaking.
