TIFF's Canadian top 10:

And The Birds Rained Down by Louise Archambault, Quebec
Anne At 13,000 Ft by Kazik Radwanski, Ontario
Antigone by Sophie Deraspe, Quebec
Black Conflux by Nicole Dorsey, Newfoundland/Quebec
The Body Remembers When The World Broke Open by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and Kathleen Hepburn, British Columbia
Matthias & Maxime by Xavier Dolan, Quebec
Murmur by Heather Young, Nova Scotia
One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk by Zacharias Kunuk, Nunavut
The Twentieth Century by Matthew Rankin, Quebec
White Lie by Calvin Thomas and Yonah Lewis, Ontario

I hear great things about a couple of these but I wouldn't mind if they took a year off from Dolan worship

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 15:32 (four years ago) link

well he is only director on that list that most of us down south have heard of

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 15:46 (four years ago) link

The Body Remembers... is on Netflix, at least in Canada. I suspect Anne at 13,000 Ft will make some waves when it makes the rounds theatrically next year. (I haven't seen it but ppl I trust loved it, and it earns automatic points for its 75-minute runtime.)

(I'll say that, for the first time, I now feel Parasite actually will get that best picture nod.)

i thought everyone was unthrilled by Harriet

Just Mercy?

Classic industry awards gravitating toward the wrong middlebrow candidates. Ergo...

I know CLEMENCY is neither widely seen nor easy to watch, but to those who have, Alfre Woodard's near no-show in this year's awards season so far looks close to absurd: no American actor this year is working at a higher level of detail, complexity and emotional intuition.

Harriet, many have been quick to point out, actually made a fairly large chunk of change. More than any other best actress candidate outside of Lupita, so far.

At this point each year's Nat'l Film Registry list is about half eye-opening and incredibly cool-looking a-g or documentary works from the first half of the century, and half I Love the 80s/90s fodder.

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:54 (four years ago) link

Cool list

Morbs where did you watch a 13 hour movie?

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:55 (four years ago) link

It screened at some fests and rep houses, split over three nights

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:57 (four years ago) link

what does the film registry actually do with the things it preserves? Obtain celluloid prints and place them in cold storage?

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:58 (four years ago) link

I'm not part of the Ash is Purest White-Pain and Glory consensus. Need to watch Transit again; I've never been mad about Petzold.

Mildly shocked Portrait of a Lady on Fire is as low as it is.

in NYC, Lincoln Center split La Flor into 5 parts, I think. Took me 13 days, I think.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:12 (four years ago) link

Transit would be in my top 5 fer sure

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:13 (four years ago) link

How do you split La Flor in five?

Frederik B, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:14 (four years ago) link

it would be hilarious to watch one "part" per night considering the wildly divergent lengths of the parts

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:15 (four years ago) link

Yeah, isn't one part like three days long?

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:28 (four years ago) link

seemed so

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:32 (four years ago) link

lmao that is one way to do it

I'm so glad I maxed out on the articles I can read there for free this month.

The one at 5,272 played in main competition at Cannes, and how the fuck hasn't that cost someone their job already?

Frederik B, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:19 (four years ago) link

I had no idea they even had an article limit which I guess says it all.

The only WTF I care to mention is What's Next in the Worst

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:19 (four years ago) link

you’re next is the worst movie of the decade? they need to try harder

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:22 (four years ago) link

or i guess one of the worst*

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:22 (four years ago) link

they also stuck Endgame at the very bottom for the clicks, which? fine

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:23 (four years ago) link

melancholia is #1, Avenger at #5,279 suggest this is mostly a list of movies in unranked order for clicks so wheeeeeeeeeeeee

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:38 (four years ago) link

Here are the 4,961 films that are neither the best nor the worst movies.

like, this is sort of my jam but even i find this fucking ridiculous

It's clickbait and I won't blame anyone for not peeking, but ...

The Tree of Life (#52) criminally too low

Way too many to list criminally too high
