Pretty weird to see 100 Gecs get embraced by hipsters after like 30 years of message board posters calling John Zorn and Mr. Bungle insufferable neckbeard music

― The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten)

are neckbeards listening to 100 gecs?

my only disappointment with coming out as trans was finding out that trans people in real life listen to the same sort of music everyone else listens to; we're not really some sort of tastemaker cultural elite. eventually other people will cotton on to the fact that we're not actually "cool" but until them i guess we can snow them by talking about 100 gecs

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Friday, 6 December 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link

whiney some of us have actually been waiting almost thirty years for someone to mr bungle all the great music that came out after mr bungle just let us have this one okay

I just keep going back to this album again and again, which isn't something I expected after my initial listen. Definitely up there as far as album of the year goes.

(I also listened to Mr. Bungle a lot in the 90s)

Novelty and stupid jokes are immune to criticism, so it's not on you if you don't have the patience to go through more than ten seconds of that shit.

silby, Tuesday, 28 April 2020 13:33 (three years ago) link

as is often the case the best angle we have here is from d-40 about pure surface. there are other things that you might call totally superficial that don't have the same resonance or particular affect, just as there are many types of shitposting. gecs have a distinct attitude behind them that is v different to melodramatic kitsch old stuff like mr bungle or whatever. it's not parody, it's not quite pastiche. there is a welcoming cuteness and personability that help make gecs infectious, but also a blankness. they're not aiming for any sort of transcendence, they're not referring to anything other than referencing itself, it's pure empty gesture, like when maggie nelson says "the most I want to do is show you the end of my index finger. its muteness". there's an acceptance and glory in the total lack of transcendence, a ritualistic embrace of uselessness

could say they are doomer fun. not nihilistic necessarily (altho never listen to anyone who uses nihilist pejoratively), or stupid necessarily, so much as irrationalist. high nonsense. which makes them traditional rock and roll as outlined by meltzer.

Well, yeah.

post-ween imo. something extremely, aggressively non-specific about the emptiness. beyond pastiche, not so much playing with particular signifiers as totally burnt out on cycling through them. standing atop the mashed-up goo, everything smells like shit. lowest-common-denominator meaninglessness to the point of total fluidity.

loathe to google why everyone is gecsplaining right now

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 16:50 (three years ago) link

for the record my earlier post wasn't meant as some kind of sharp meta-dismissal of 100 gecs themselves, more a dismissal of the idea that there would be any value or purpose in any of us dismissing them.

100 gecs don't exactly invite critical discourse. what the hell am i supposed to say? i don't get it? who cares if i get it? they're not doing it for my benefit. i'm trans, sure, but i'm also a bougie middle-aged white lady. if they want my opinion, they'll ask.

but i have no idea why they would _want_ my opinion, quite honestly. it's not like uninformed critical opinions from clueless people are in short supply right now. the one thing i do get from being trans is that i am frequently the recipient of exactly those sort of judgements on my lived experience from people whose opinions are simply irrelevant. 100 gecs' music is their expression of their lived experience, and the least i can do is respect that. i support whatever it is they are doing, and i hope it brings them joy and that it brings the people who have some faint inkling of what the hell they are up to joy.

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 16:53 (three years ago) link

they seem to enjoy bad opinions

"mememe" is one of the better tracks here somehow

ufo, Thursday, 16 March 2023 14:05 (one year ago) link

i was not much of a fan of the debut (basically came down to not liking pop-punk vocals and the production being too flimsy - i want my hyperpop to sound huge!) but they could at least write a hook

ufo, Thursday, 16 March 2023 23:27 (one year ago) link

Ok yeah I can’t deny on first listen this is a massive drop in quality from the debut. It’s good but the pop-punk/Sleigh Bells style they’re going for here doesn’t work as well as I would’ve hoped. It all just feels like general zany randomness in a way the debut didn’t? And it’s so much less fun

Thought the last album and the December EP were mostly awful - but Doritos & Fritos was a worthwhile attempt to update White Music. So I have no idea what to expect from an album which is apparently more like the latter but which most people aren't keen on.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Friday, 17 March 2023 11:55 (one year ago) link

idk, I think the new album is pretty good, but then again, I loved the first one and thought the Snake Eyes EP was a decent stopgap so ymmv. I did find it a bit disappointing on first listen, but I've warmed up to it more with a couple more go thrus.

It definitely helps to have a strong tolerance for late 90s/early aughts pop-punk though and I agree with the pfork review that Ween is a pretty good reference point for the wackiness and erratic tonal shifts.

Kinda wish that the looming specters of Disney lawyers didn't prevent this one from getting included though . . .

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Friday, 17 March 2023 15:46 (one year ago) link

I generally really liked the album! Wasn't too interested in the more digicore/screamy aspects that return from the earlier releases but I was taken by the stuff that's more in the vein of D&F (latter of which sounds better than ever) or at least more tuneful. The frog song for instance, with its croaks a nice Stump homage. Or the Sleng Teng underlay of The Most Wanted Person. Or the two songs that try awfully hard not to turn into Sweet Dreams or Hunting for Witches (this is a struggle I faced several times when I used to make music).
