I'm listening to 75 Dollar Bill right now and I'm hearing "if Sunburned Hand of the Man were really into North African desert blues". I'm...kinda into it and might buy it on Bandcamp to have something to listen to while doing laundry tomorrow.

god, i am such a mark for ted gioia, i know there are people around here who hate him but he reps for music i don't see _anybody_ else mentioning and a lot of it is excellent

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Thursday, 5 December 2019 00:37 (four years ago) link

I hate a lot of his stupid opinion pieces but I admire his approach to his year-end list and there are often at least a few things I wind up checking out.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Thursday, 5 December 2019 00:58 (four years ago) link

holy shit is "spirit lady" right up my alley, it's like the 17 minute version of eddy grant's "everybody dance" crossed with andy hofle's "arcade ambience"

and there is nobody i trust more than him to recommend me bagpipe music

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Thursday, 5 December 2019 01:16 (four years ago) link

I don't know if I'll ever understand 75 Dollar Bill

this surprises me. I could listen to Rick Brown play for hours

whiney is your 75 dollar bill issue that they wear their influence on their sleeve and you'd rather just hear bombino or somethin'?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 5 December 2019 03:50 (four years ago) link

No, they’re just not sticking w me for whatever reason.

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 5 December 2019 04:38 (four years ago) link

Listened to the 75 Dollar Bill album this morning while doing laundry, and I’m into it. It’s basically “Endless Boogie covering Tony Conrad & Faust” (the title track is, anyway) and that was a very pleasant surprise.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Thursday, 5 December 2019 12:57 (four years ago) link

I'd never heard of 75 Dollar Bill until about ten seconds ago and here they are on two back-to-back lists.

Matt DC, Thursday, 5 December 2019 13:10 (four years ago) link

Getting a slight Rangda vibe from that 75 Dollar Bill rec, which is fine by me.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 5 December 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link

This is some really solid cultural appropriation.

pomenitul, Thursday, 5 December 2019 14:27 (four years ago) link

i remember the name (it's a memorable name) because they were big on wfmu the last time i was listening semi-regularly. didn't get what people heard in them then and don't get it now, honestly... i've heard enough instrumental psychedelic jams that i tend to be picky about them!

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Thursday, 5 December 2019 14:42 (four years ago) link

i got them confused in my head with Two Dollar Guitar

Wee Bloabby (NickB), Thursday, 5 December 2019 14:52 (four years ago) link

Ha, I confused them with post-rock band The American Dollar for a while!

Glad to see Ted Gioia list Mississippi’s Jimmy Duck Holmes on his album list. While not quite as raucous as Fat Possum label RL Burnside releases from the past, Holmes has a unique charm to his blues sound that work.

I think the Burial 2011 to 2019 album is so beautifully sequenced. It is an an archival recording but I love all of these tracks and hearing them all together in this way makes this the album of the year for me

Dan S, Sunday, 8 December 2019 03:00 (four years ago) link

It's funny, just a few weeks before the compendium was announced, I'd realized all the recent EPs/12"s were on Bandcamp and boyght them all based on people repping them here. So I've gotten really used to them chronologically--I'll have to give it a shot as Burial himself has sequenced it...

Soundslike, Sunday, 8 December 2019 03:44 (four years ago) link

I'm also agreeing with more stuff in the RS list than I thought I'd ever be. I'm not sure if that means a turnaround for Rolling Stone or for me. I suppose it might be part of growing older: get to 40, start thinking about your retirement savings, begin going to doctors more often and find yourself in agreement with RS and Mojo.

File this list under "weird": https://www.vulture.com/article/best-albums-2019.html.

I mean I can agree with some of these but Sturgill, Brittany Howard and Wilco on top?? It reminds me of that RS list from a couple years ago with U2 and the odds and ends Springsteen album at #1 and #2 respectively.

10. Griselda Records, W.W.C.D.
9. Sturgill Simpson, Sound & Fury
8. The Highwomen, The Highwomen
7. Lana Del Rey, Norman Fucking Rockwell
6. Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, Bandana
