So at the end of Stranger Things S3, David Harbour's character, in destroying the Russian dimension-breaching machine, appears to be transported to Siberia, where he is held in a Russian prison. Now he shows up in this movie as a fat, aging Russian superagent of some kind.

Stranger Things is obviously a Black Widow prequel. CALLING IT.

Just after Civil War, I believe. And then at some point, presumably, jumping to the present day/five years from now.

Ohh right, so it goes backwards then forwards. I'm not impressed with the trailer have to say. Coming out the same week as the Wonder Woman 1984 trailer was a bollock dropped.

I notice the music in that trailer is the music used in every single Marvel movie trailer of the past 20 years. They just recycle it over and over.

I am still not convinced I'm interested in Black Widow's backstory but I do think Florence Pugh is a really good actor, so I'm open to this movie.

(I think Scarlett Johansson is at times a really good actor too, but hasn't been in this role for whatever reason.)

Sorry, I was wrong about this Waid series being “underwritten.” It shifts from faintly ridiculous to absolutely batty in the back stretch. (The scene on the Moon is, well, lunacy.)

It is perhaps important to note that the series is co-written by the artist (Chris Samnee), with whom he also collaborated on Daredevil and a recent brief run on Captain America. I don't think it's a coincidence that these have been some of the more well-received Waid joints in a while.

Learned what I already knew: you can't just wander into a Marvel movie and expect to get it. I don't watch them, except for the Batman films and the early Spiderman films. I watched this as research, connected to something I've been working on. I quickly realized that there were back stories upon back stories that I needed to know to make sense of anything. The rest of the time, explosions and fights and stuff. During the big finale in the sky, I kept thinking "Where is the rest of the world?"

I really enjoyed it without having seen Endgame (I did do some Googling to fill in the blanks). I guess if you know nothing at all about the characters or overall story arc, it might be even more confusing than that.

Batmens are neither Marvel characters nor Marvel movies, btw; the early (presumably Raimi, not Hammond, but either are true) Spider-Mens are Marvel characters, but not Marvel-produced movies.

Yeah--it's the present run of Marvel movies I've kept clear of. I have been intending to see Black Panther at some point, if that's Marvel.

(xpost) I was able to piece some things together. Being a big fan of The Americans, the affinities with that resonated more for me.

it's basically The Americans but post-FSB and an oligarch having klept a super-spy piece of the spy apparatus, the only bit to figure out in the main plot is why Natasha is on the run and not with her mostly-american super hero buddies are absent

I can't think of the other movies giving much backstory other than plugging into the occasional callback

Tbf I had seen all the MCU movies up to this point and i still had trouble with the backstory here because I hadn't seen iron man 2 in like a decade

I saw this one recently, going thru the marvel flicks w the kid. I thought this was surprisingly good, especially the first two thirds which leaned more on Mission Impossible style action than not. Then it had a kinda tedious climax which was a carbon copy of a few other marvel films. But overall good, w a great cast, and Florence Pugh is vv excellent.

Lol I think this is the only MCU movie in recent years I actually watched and I watched it solely because SJ and FP are the hottest people imo. Don’t remember anything about it, but would probably watch again.

I think Tenet was the first theatrical release of the pandemic? BW was pushed back to 2021, and released simultaneously on streaming.

It felt like BW was a bit downplayed, probably due it being a prequel coupled w the events of avengers endgame. It was a bit worthier than a lot of the flicks considered more essential to the ongoing marvel narrative.

I think it was Tenet, yes. I recall talking myself out of seeing that 10 times--which was probably silly, as theatres were virtually empty I would soon find out. Still haven't caught up with it.

BW was kind of shuffled out in a weird way that let them pretend they were creating a b-tier of movies instead of acting like Avengers is the throughline and every other superhero movie in the universe has equal billing

I think overly referencing past Avengers movies kind of proved that out and also was the weak point for this particular outing

It does feel like it’s been 100 years since this happened, but (as a reminder on the release sitch) there was a big ScarJo/Disney lawsuit around BW being released simultaneously in theaters and D+.

I think the studio lost some of its leverage by killing off her character before putting out the first BW movie

It's JLD's first appearance in the films - she was in one of the TV shows before.
