I was 13/14 this year so I treasure A LOT of these albums, even many of the bad ones.
Evans on Hammond (evol j) at 8:27 2 Dec 1

I was 14/15 and still have many favourites from this year, most of them not listed here.

Voted Buckley. If he hadn't died, who knows the kind of impact he has in rock or pop. Grace was huge for me personally, and felt like the beginnings of something more, his talent felt that huge.

My favorite album here by far is the dark damp dramatic Dog Man Star

brimstead, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 00:54 (four years ago) link

Best guitar solo on it is prob “we are the pigs”

brimstead, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 00:55 (four years ago) link

This will always be Superunknown.

Mazzy Tsar (PBKR), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 02:10 (four years ago) link

It has so many different kinds of heavy.

Mazzy Tsar (PBKR), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 02:11 (four years ago) link

can't believe they left off groundwork's "today we will not be invisible nor silent"

note that high rise's "live" was also released in '94

that said, i'd argue that the iconic guitar album of the year is s.e. rogie's "dead men don't smoke marijuana"

honorable mention goes to the only 7" by the insensible eggs and sonny sharrock's "space ghost coast to coast" ep

weirdest omission is kyuss; i can see not finding time for incantation's timeless "mortal throne of nazarene", but "welcome to sky valley"? seriously i don't even fuckin' _like_ kyuss and that one's a classic.

NIN vs Pavement vs Pumpkins, I think. Leaning toward Pumpkins. I don't know that Richard Thompson, though.

Feel like giving Downward Spiral some live, but lots of good stuff on this list.

Ill Communication, for "Tough Guy" and "Heart Attack Man".

These days I staunchly believe that "Frail & Bedazzled"/"Hello Kitty Kat"/"Starla" are p much the pinnacle of grunge

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Best album here is Chocolate and Cheese, even though that one’s not all that guitar-heavy.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 13 December 2019 00:49 (four years ago) link

A good advert for Dean Ween’s versatility though

Or maybe not. Zing crashing when I try to vote. Hive mind telling me no

calstars, Friday, 13 December 2019 01:25 (four years ago) link

Disappointed not to see the Rollins Band's Weight on this list. Chris Haskett is a really underrated guitarist - his ability to combine funk-metal with art-noise, Fripp-esque prog and jazz fusion puts him way ahead of a lot of the dudes listed here.

Misread this as Guitar Wolf's 50 Iconic Albums of 1994 and I was like FUCK YEAH! Run Wolf Run! Kung Fu Ramone! Jett Fucking Beer!

P.O.D. existed in 1994. I learned something today.

billstevejim, Friday, 13 December 2019 01:56 (four years ago) link

this is the same year Under the Pink came out. I'd have voted for that. Otherwise the right answer is Ill Communication

akm, Friday, 13 December 2019 02:26 (four years ago) link

I first heard P.O.D. before they crossed over to the mainstream. they were huge in the Christian market at the time. I remember, back when I was a fundie and all of my musical purchases were controlled by mine parents, I tried to see if there was any cool metal that I could get at the Christian music store.

they sounded a bit more like Korn back then and didn't make me want to vomit up an intestine

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 December 2019 02:30 (four years ago) link

this was the 'other' Christian 'metal' album I listened to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtUbcmfiXfk&list=PLh2Jxj-z_-3eHTEcOeQzRkM6uvGUkpWyi

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 December 2019 02:31 (four years ago) link

ahh never mind, wasn't important

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 December 2019 02:32 (four years ago) link

kind of a ridiculous inclusion, really. nobody outside of that scene repped for P.O.D. then.

feel like Offspring - Smash might get my vote. everybody at my school listened to them, and you got clowned if you didn't like them.

"Self Esteem" had the whole "bass only during the verse" that Nirvana brought back into fashion, everybody sung the lyrics then, everybody sings them now.

and pretty much everyone of my classmates loved singing the part in "Bad Habit", SOMETHING'S ODD, FEEL LIKE I'M GOD YOU STUPID DUMB SHIT GODDAMN MOTHERFUCKER.

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 December 2019 04:17 (four years ago) link

OTM. I remember singing along w Bad Habit on the school bus, I guess on a boombox? And that still gets stuck in my head on occasion, very much against my will.

I turned 12 in 1994 and it's crazy how many of these albums I remember owning and/or loving

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 13 December 2019 05:51 (four years ago) link

yeah it was the first full year I engaged with mainstream music or music at all, really. I remember these all vividly, they all evoke specific memories

Dingle Kringle (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 December 2019 05:54 (four years ago) link

Somewhere I even have a pristine CD of Eric Clapton From the Cradle floating around!

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 13 December 2019 06:02 (four years ago) link

not sure which one i hate more: Page & Plant or The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over"
