In other news, I've been working on a dance music project (house, breaks, other) with a couple of other guys and we finally have a bunch of stuff to release. This is the b-side of our first EP, which will come out right before New Year's. I was playing around with randomizing the arpeggiator type every couple of bars which results in a never-ending cycle of patterns. It's a bunch of Ableton instruments, and then some Behringer Model D on pads and a different arpeggiator.

Thanks! Full album out in January.

four weeks pass...

very excited about this being completed. have put a lot of work into it and i think we've finally figured out how to get a semi-decent sounding recording out of the gear we're using. it's not bob clearmountain or rudy van gelder or anything, but at least it doesn't sound like we're recording in an old shoebox anymore. i selected 'avery park' as the "highlighted" song, but only because it's short. i know it's a really long album, so if you just want to check out one thing, my favorite track is the new version of 'spectral three' (track 12).

Against all odds, actual music came out of my brain and was performed by me alone earlier this week and here it is (drums, tiny cymbals I borrowed from a band I played in a couple years ago, and a cowbell that used to belong to my drum teacher) 💕💜💕

Some good stuff here. Loving the balearic vibes on Avery Park Austin

paolo, Sunday, 12 January 2020 18:27 (four years ago) link

thank you for listening paolo! i like 'short hydra masks'! it has a very interesting dissonant / redemptive dynamic.

also, if you like syrup and powdered sugar on your mixdown, andy did his own mix of 'avery park.' with the chords emphasized, like, a lot.

I'm not really sure what that means but thanks!

Here's a little exercise in getting the cyberpunk/Vangelis vibes out of my system (jk, I will never get them out of my system)

New Balboa Park single coming out in late Feb. Here is one of the b-sides:

I had a lot of fun chopping up the sax loops and playing it back into Ableton.

An audience member recorded the concert I sang in a couple of weekends ago:

https://youtu.be/cKi_o-_spMk

I'm in the quartet singing Brahms' "Quartette" (Op. 92) at the beginning; the solos I did are at 46:30 ("The Little Horses" arranged by Copland) and 1:13:08 (most of "Stars" from Les Miserables)

DJP I've been curious to hear what you sounded like for years.

always thought you probably sounded great, but this still exceeded my expectations.

reminds me of the ole choral days. love that vibrato and resonance.

Doing these little polyrhythmic improvisations/exercises:
https://www.instagram.com/p/B-4njPnDI-G/

Which inspired me to write a piece on the computer using similar rhythms but actual notes, and it sounds great in that it ends up sounding like a carbon copy Steve Reich rip, which has no reason for existing. Maybe I'll try again just recording those percussion sounds and doing a produced version, and maybe that will sound a little more fresh, idk. I know it's well-trodden territory but feels like comfort food rn.

Love that rolling drum sample in the second one.

DJI, Friday, 17 April 2020 16:05 (four years ago) link

Thanks! I played that part myself.

I think the mastering compression is a little weird on that with the bass stabs, but they wanted a mastered version submitted on very tight timeline, so it is what it is.

I have a couple new things!

First one is an instrumental for guitar with Mel9 box (clarinet setting), guitar with Big Muff, ukelele, and Casio (organ voice).

Second one is a little vignette song about my high school era rock band.

New recording, streaming on Soundcloud for a limited time before this year's album release - my electric arrangement of Montreal composer Shawn Bell's 1995 classical guitar composition Currents II. I started doing an electric version of this in 05 but hadn't really played it for 10 years before picking it up for a December gig. I've been moving towards just accepting and leaving in some of the imperfections in my playing.

Downloaded the free trial of Izotope Ozone 9 and I'm really liking it, esp the vintage compressor. Remixed/remastered the recording I posted a week ago and think it sounds a lot better; also mastered two other pieces for the planned album.

The band got our first quarantine song/video done, apparently we're going to keep doing them:

https://www.facebook.com/mamadigdown/videos/3043741569039500/

Very happy with how it turned out, although it's not fun at all to record drums in a small room, by myself, with a headphone cord that's way too short.
