The trenchant commentator is correct. After all, "capitalist enterprises" make up (does some quick, back of the envelope calculations) nearly 100% of the economic activity in capitalist societies and STEM expertise seems to result in marginal improvements to basic manufacturing that generate increased profit margins more reliably than having the ability to throw pots.

A is for (Aimless), Monday, 30 December 2019 05:32 (four years ago) link

Well yeah. Half of the observation is just a truism -- a capitalist economy is going to pay more for functions that are more valuable to capitalism. The rest is just silly. Ceramicists don't get paid six figures because we can just mass produce that shit. It has nothing to do with whether it kills people or not, and that's the most /trench part of the whole thing.

"that shit" we can mass produce being common household dishware, not yr fine work forks. But even if you could throw a working drone I doubt the DoD would be much interested.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 03:44 (four years ago) link

you're trying to tell me this is mass produceable?

As long as it's OK that the product of the mass production is nearly indistinguishable from the original, then yes, that particular piece of pottery is almost certainly mass producible. The next question would be how big the market might be for machine-produced items exactly like that and what could be charged for them versus the cost of their production, including packaging, transport and ancillary costs. If the unit cost is too high, then there's no point in initiating mass production.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 04:21 (four years ago) link

but can you put a unit cost on a soul

I don’t think ceramics is an actual degree though? It’s like Shakespeare. You can spend the vast majority of your coursework studying it but the degree is in English Lit or Art. Maybe it would be a BFA in Painting and Sculpture or mayyyyybe just Sculpture at an art school.

sarahell, Tuesday, 31 December 2019 05:36 (four years ago) link

i know several (very broke) people with BFAs in ceramics and i think at least one (very broke) person with an mfa

babu frik fan account (mh), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 06:12 (four years ago) link

Most people who go to college and do ceramics have their degrees in sculpture if it’s even that specialized. Like no, just no

sarahell, Tuesday, 31 December 2019 07:21 (four years ago) link

Honestly tho depending on what type of ceramics you do, you could actually get a machinist type job

sarahell, Tuesday, 31 December 2019 07:22 (four years ago) link

Fun fact: by longstanding custom, ceramicists must always have "Unchained Melody" playing while they work.

I mean, yeah conservative court is bad, conservatives are bad, but they also just upheld the clean water act two months ago, it's not like there is some neat and tidy plan to cover up environmental destruction with ""social progres""

Think people also forget SCOTUS aren't supposed to vote based on their personal feelings but the law itself. That obviously doesn't mean they don't, but RBG probably would have voted against legalizing abortion in Roe v Wade despite being pro-choice because she didn't feel the legal reasoning behind it was very strong.

Dig Dug the police (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 15:25 (three years ago) link

SCOTUS aren't supposed to vote based on their personal feelings but the law itself.

The SCOTUS is not the source of either social progress or slash and burn capitalism. The law itself is written by Congress, so the SCOTUS interpreting the law 'correctly' does not negate the validity of the quote. The questionable part of the quote for me is whether social progress is truly a ploy conceived by capitalism as a means to distract society from its predations. I doubt it.
