Grimes/Claire Boucher thread

If you look at some of her interviews/blog entries in the past she's always been kind of dorky and had some immature opinions on pretty much everything. It was sort of cute and on-brand earlier in her career because she was younger and it felt sincere because there was a childlike wonder to her music. Now she's in her 30's and dating billionaires so it doesn't feel cute or sincere anymore, it feels willfully naive and there's a backlash to show it, she is in heavy need of some rewiring.

feel like some outlandish percentage like 75% of ilm distaste for grimes is bc she dated musk for a minute. i do understand since he's pretty distasteful and esp for ilx politics/aesthetics but seems so harsh to run her down bc of a very short romance.

I still think she's is immensely talented and one of the best artists this decade, but I think she's wasting the spotlight and what should be her prime years as an artist in this album's cycle.

@ ums i mean you're probably right. im trying to be charitable, as someone who has veered from admiration to disgust re: this project. her press release about optimizing her creative process and recent comments about how we are moving towards a sort of baudrillardian simulacrum existence for me was a glimmer of hope that she is subverting some of this shit, but ... you're probably right

She should make a black metal album. Fans are used to overlooking politically problematic lyrics.

tbf I'd find Elon Musk a little more entertaining if he was some random local dude who had goofy ideas instead of a billionaire who likes being a celebrity. kind of a social responsibility to live up to when your influence extends beyond your reach

i'd be more tolerant of her ridiculous antics and embarrassing choice of partner if her music was still as great as it was a few years ago. the new album isn't bad but it's hard to feel excited about

Listened to it today. It's not bad! Singles are great and IDORU is good too. Definitely sounds like an unfinished mix/master. Vocal recording/performance and production is the best she's done to this point. Production behind those vocals sounds fairly generic and uninspired compared to her earlier albums. If they can flesh that out, it's a solid record

I liked IDORU a lot. the album is good, but I'll most likely wait until the thing is actually out before I spend more time with it.

the interviews with LDR and Brit Marling were pretty interesting. She has interesting and intelligent things to say.
