right okay

we should do this whenever but I think at this point after the eoys/eods would give us the space required? idk if people are keen to do it now then maybe but there's a lot of listening to do

imago, Monday, 25 November 2019 15:38 (four years ago) link

seandalai has to do it now.

so basically nominating is over? didn't see Midnight Odyssey and only 1 Wand song.

meisenfek, Monday, 25 November 2019 22:16 (four years ago) link

Yes, but I will allow you to nominate some tracks since its the 1st day and nobody will have voted yet.

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Monday, 25 November 2019 22:31 (four years ago) link

The timing for this poll is way off imo, with not only end-of-year but also end-of-decade polls rolling in and taking up all the time and space for the coming two months. This will snow under completely (which is vmic for metal on ilm, though this time 'round it seems easily avoidable?). In any case, I won't have the time to learn and discover and dive in and vote. Godspeed.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 25 November 2019 22:38 (four years ago) link

I don't think GYBE was nominated.

Antonym Scalia (Leee), Monday, 25 November 2019 22:39 (four years ago) link

And that's not even my biggest problem with this poll.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 25 November 2019 22:50 (four years ago) link

what is your biggest problem?

ilx eoy polls dont take place til end of january.

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 00:59 (four years ago) link

also why not raise these points when noms started? you knew the plan was to roll out the week before xmas.

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 01:07 (four years ago) link

seandalai is busy enough with effectively 3 EOY polls to run jan/feb. Please think about him. Its very kind of him to help me out with all this and Im really grateful he does it.

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 01:08 (four years ago) link

OK, I've got to campaign for this, and also hope Neechy can sneak it in as a nomination because it's absurd that of all Circle songs this one isn't on the list.

Not only possibly their most anthemically melodic and accessible, it's also Circle at their proggiest, most NWOBHM and most downright fun. They chuck it all in here - a great tune, three-way harmonised guitars, synth arpeggios, amazing drumming (check the driving 7/8 section with Lappanen doing those sick open hats on the beat) and a terrific Ratto vocal performance.

I give you, Vaellus.

That's the spirit. Added to google docs and pastebin.

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 14:11 (four years ago) link

There's a convincing case to made that Ghost (the Swedish one, not that Japanese psych band) aren't actually metal.

But since they already have several songs on the list, you've gotta include "Square Hammer" on there. That song is an anthem, an earworm, a masterpiece.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqoyKzgkqR4

My other nom that somehow didn't make the cut is "Havenless", by Enslaved.

enochroot, Tuesday, 26 November 2019 14:51 (four years ago) link

i'll add them but its not a metal only poll remember

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 14:59 (four years ago) link

I will def do some campaigning later this week!

Simon H., Tuesday, 26 November 2019 15:22 (four years ago) link

Apols for complaining, had a rough night, ignore me. Slim chance I'll get around to voting (well, listening and then voting) but that shouldn't stop you guys.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 26 November 2019 16:17 (four years ago) link

no probs. Hope you enjoy the playlist. There is plenty of songs on there that will appeal to non-metal fans and dilettantes.

Its not an extreme metal only poll. It infact favours the opposite of that.

But results all depend on who votes.

Liveblogging the Spotify playlist on random:

Daughters Of The Sun - Ride To Die: never heard of em, nice pleasantly droning hippie rock
Orphaned Land - Mabool (The Flood): I do know this band, and while I absolutely love their debut Sahara despite terrible off-key singing, this is slicker and better played but not nearly as interesting and just too unintentionally goofy.
Carcass - Thrasher's Abbatoir: hell yeah Carcass!
Darkspace - 4.18: maybe not the best Darkspace album and I prefer them less conventionally BM like on II but this is still pretty glorious. 28 minutes though, for a track poll?
Gojira - Stranded: I've never liked this band, but this is a great song. Awesome drumming, hooks...did they make a big stylistic change or was I wrong all these years?

Siegbran, Tuesday, 26 November 2019 18:56 (four years ago) link

Obviously whoever nominated the Darkspace thought it best to nominate one of their shorter songs.

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 19:59 (four years ago) link

Shape Of Despair - Reaching The Innermost: fantastic
KTL - Theme: jesus another 27 minute track, and there's no fast forward on Spotify Free...also stretching the boundaries of this poll, if the Stephen O'Malley name wasn't on this, it would just be straight ambient/IDM. It's a cool building crescendo but this really could've been trimmed to 7-8 minutes without losing anything.
Hot Snakes - I Hate The Kids: early 90s noisy alternative rock, I like it
Terminal Cheesecake - Wipey's Revenge: more throwback 90s-sounding alt rock, nice bassy stomper but that wah-effect somewhat outstays its 7 minute welcome.
Priests - JJ: post-punk, pretty cool. Surprised this is from 2017, I would've placed this 15 years earlier.
Armor For Sleep - Car Underwater: generic emo maybe but this is a good song, brings the hooks and the energy
Papa Roach - Last Resort: so overplayed I don't even have an opinion anymore
QOTSA - No One Knows: see above

This playlist is a hell of a lot better than the random garbage that Spotify tries to claim is 'tailored to my taste'.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 26 November 2019 20:00 (four years ago) link

Unsane - No Chance: well it's an Unsane song, heard one, you heard em all. Still dirty grimy noisy hardcore, angry at everything and I like that, but on the other hand, it doesn't *really* pack the punch it should.
Stabscotch - Along Alligator Drunes: yeah this spastic post-hardcore shouty stuff is really not my thing
Shining - Fisheye: most of the bands that try to pull off this prog/jazz/metal thing fail miserably but these guys nail it

Siegbran, Tuesday, 26 November 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link

I'm enjoying the liveblogging!

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 28 November 2019 00:54 (four years ago) link

Given time and opportunity I can add my thoughts.

Glad that Siegbran liked Priests! I’ve been conditioned by ILM to expect my nominations to fall into oblivion.

Antonym Scalia (Leee), Thursday, 28 November 2019 01:59 (four years ago) link

if you campaign for them people will check them out and be more likely to vote for them

has anyone voted yet?

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Friday, 29 November 2019 22:00 (four years ago) link

I voted :) I didn't save my ballot. I went mixed, picked ten or fifteen songs I really love, then filled up to 100 with stuff I liked, or stuff I know I've enjoyed but couldn't sing a note of.

any campaigning?

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Saturday, 30 November 2019 15:40 (four years ago) link

I’ll rep for Pharaoh Overlord – “Black Horse” (the studio version on the album Lunar Jetman) - 4 minutes and
20 seconds of heavy metal free jazz followed by 12
minutes of minimal & kaleidoscopic hard rock riffage

💠 (crüt), Saturday, 30 November 2019 16:09 (four years ago) link

I'll probably vote for that along with my nomination "Rodent" which is just more in the way of slow-burn kraut-y deliciousness. Lunar Jetman is almost a perfect album imho.

the oxford book of chaos (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 1 December 2019 06:09 (four years ago) link

I'm relistening to 13 Japanese Birds in the car, wondering if Pandi recorded the drums while listening to Merzbow's take or if they were both totally separate.

BTW I pretty much picked those two Merzbow tracks at random, obviously I haven't fully absorbed 15 hours of harsh noise enough to name tracks out of it. That's kind of how I feel about the whole poll, my weighted section was songs that stood out from their respective albums, and therefore mostly pop/punk emo stuff. I bet the mall emo is going to place well in the end results.

Tom Violence (Extended Club Mix) (Tom Violence), Sunday, 1 December 2019 15:31 (four years ago) link

I bet the mall emo is going to place well in the end results.

only if people vote! and the people I associate with it on ilm haven't really posted on the nominations thread.

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 1 December 2019 15:50 (four years ago) link

Well if not a lot of people vote then it will definitely place highly, because my top ten was nothing but Thursday and ATDI.

maybe you've given everyone a reason to vote!

WTF with that Buckcherry song.
That would be a good candidate for a "Defend The Indefensible" thread.

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 14:49 (four years ago) link

Its hard to tell if everyone's working on their ballots and have no time for campaigning or if nobody is interested.

Anyone fancy campaigning for songs?

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 00:49 (four years ago) link

I'll do my best to get a ballot in for this but have basically no time for any new listening. The playlist is intimidatingly vast. Which is also probably a song on said playlist.

Life is a meaningless nightmare of suffering...save string (Chinaski), Thursday, 5 December 2019 20:30 (four years ago) link

well, we could delay until after EOY polls if that is what people would prefer.

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 5 December 2019 20:44 (four years ago) link

Pleased to see most people following an implicit rule that you can campaign for any song you like as long as it involves members of Circle.

Noel Scott Emits (Noel Emits), Thursday, 5 December 2019 20:50 (four years ago) link

So should we vote for "Eva Brain" like it says in the nominations list, instead of "Eva Braun"?

o. nate, Friday, 6 December 2019 03:32 (four years ago) link

Would anyone mind if we postponed this to february or march?

I think there's more interest in an eoy poll

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Friday, 6 December 2019 18:59 (four years ago) link

No problem at all AFAIC.

Noel Scott Emits (Noel Emits), Friday, 6 December 2019 20:20 (four years ago) link

i just hope people have enthusiasm for when it runs since we took 3 years just to reach this point.

If everyone were to bookmark the thread and follow the spotify playlist it might help.

Vote with a prog record (Oor Neechy), Friday, 6 December 2019 22:22 (four years ago) link

Thanks for postponing! Will definitely vote & could use more time to listen to the noms.

I guess we can open noms up again too. So just post on the actual noms thread folks to nominate.
