Sometimes white isn’t the dominant color, but the photo still has the overexposed / washed-out look that was popular at the time (maybe to mimic the aesthetic of those Hype Williams videos)?

^this was the moment when Britney & BSB (and maybe others?) released videos in which everyone was wearing all-white outfits

Here’s that classic “overexposed” look in video form:

funny how you only really notice these trends when you look back on them. this white background + overexposed subject is really really early 2000s. I remember a lot of photography studios offering these kinds of photos as an alternative to the regular family portraits

entry level graphic design was a permanent meal ticket in the late 90s due to the sheer number of places that wanted a website made. a lot of these designers learned how to use Photoshop to “cut out” someone from the background of a photo, but didn’t have the actual illustration skills or creativity to add a new background once they’d done that. not that i have any personal experience with that.

I was working at a radio consulting firm when that Lisa Marie Presley album came out, and occasionally supplementing my meager income via promo CD sales. I sold an advance copy of that particular CD to some gonzo Elvis fan, on eBay, for an insane amount of money. (This was just a few days before the album's release date; I think the buyer just wanted the artifact). I had similar luck with a Def Leppard album, and something else I can't recall.

Looks like Apple used that aesthetic since the 80s, but it may have gotten even “whiter” during the iMac era:
