(do u like my stab at headline writing)

paris geller spinoff pitch (morrisp), Wednesday, 20 November 2019 21:01 (four years ago) link

Lol at that article. I didn’t know Bob Iver has lost his ‘cred ‘when collaborator Kanye West started making gospel music.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Wednesday, 20 November 2019 21:57 (four years ago) link

"lover" for song of the year is a cool nom, when that song catches me in the right headspace it's fairly great

big wtf at "you need to calm down" being nominated for anything much less pop solo performance

dyl, Thursday, 21 November 2019 08:13 (four years ago) link

I wish Paul Westerberg did a cover version of "Lover"

cpl593H, Thursday, 21 November 2019 15:45 (four years ago) link

Braun writes a public letter to Swift, highlighting threats against his family. (Taylor hasn’t spoken publicly since her “Don’t know what else to do” tweet).

damn, scooter better strap up

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 November 2019 18:39 (four years ago) link

So did they get this sorted, or...?

a bevy of supermodels, musicians and Lena Dunham (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 25 November 2019 18:31 (four years ago) link

I kinda think Scooter is right, that this has more to do with advertising the re-recordings of the earlier albums than it has any kind of agreement that could be made.

Frederik B, Monday, 25 November 2019 18:42 (four years ago) link

The whole thing is so crazy at this point. No matter what is at the core of this agreement, where surely Taylor is in the right, sending a mob of fans after enemies, then staying silent as it devolves into closed offices and death threats, is so beyond defensible. It's abhorrent behaviour. And nobody speaks up about it? Are people afraid that they'll get death threats as well? Or not able to handle more than one villain at a time?

Frederik B, Monday, 25 November 2019 18:45 (four years ago) link

She performed her old songs at the AMAs last night, so guess she prevailed on that piece at least. Her Twitter feed has moved on, nothing more said about the negotiations.

FODMAP of the reef (morrisp), Monday, 25 November 2019 18:52 (four years ago) link

I don't think anyone ever could explain how she was supposed to be prohibited from performing her old songs. That's not up to whoever owns the masters to decide, I think.

Frederik B, Monday, 25 November 2019 18:55 (four years ago) link

it was more a matter of whether recording the live performance would break the contract that allows her to begin re-recording the old songs a year from now

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 25 November 2019 19:01 (four years ago) link

But is that a thing as well? Because presumably a lot of artists, who has been on more than one label, do televised/streamed live performances.

Frederik B, Monday, 25 November 2019 19:09 (four years ago) link

Who knows what Scooter and his lawyers are up to, but would they have had a leg to stand on legally?

Frederik B, Monday, 25 November 2019 19:09 (four years ago) link

Big Machine has been saying no, both in their earlier statement and Scooter's "public letter":

As the world now knows you can and should perform any song you would like at the AMAs. I have never and would never say otherwise. You do not need anyone’s permission to do so legally but I am stating it here clearly and publicly so there is no more debate or confusion.

...but maybe they were originally trying to pull something else.

FODMAP of the reef (morrisp), Monday, 25 November 2019 19:15 (four years ago) link

It's not like I trust a guy named Scooter, lol :) I just don't get the legal aspect.

Frederik B, Monday, 25 November 2019 19:16 (four years ago) link

There is something in the contract which allows Taylor to start re-recording her old songs sometime in 2020. But if she does so before that date she loses the right to do so in the future. I think the fight was over whether Big Machine would claim that if Taylor’s performance showed up anywhere other than the live broadcast it would be a breach of the contract. That’s why their statements kept emphasizing that they could not prevent her from performing old songs in a live setting.

song is made somehow even more gorgeous here

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 19:26 (four years ago) link

Wow, that is a lovely remix.

I was at a holiday street fair last weekend, and a girl with a gtr & microphone was absolutely murdering this song (like, in a bad way).

FODMAP of the reef (morrisp), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 19:41 (four years ago) link

I wouldn't say this is an improvement because I don't think there's a lot of room to improve on "Lover" (it's already great) but this is a remix that deserves to exist...which is a lot.

So no discussion of the new Christmas song? I like it a lot, super hooky and bubbly earworm.

I think it's great. But the song I'm really hearting is the one she and Webber wrote for Cats, which is far better than I expected.

She has been named Woman of the Decade.

Inapt Authority (morrisp), Friday, 13 December 2019 14:36 (four years ago) link

uh oh Soros mentions now

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 13 December 2019 14:39 (four years ago) link

"Woman" of the Decade is a qualified, bullshit distinction imo. how bout just "Artist of the Decade"?

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Friday, 13 December 2019 16:13 (four years ago) link

Will they have a Man of the Decade too?

☮ (peace, man), Friday, 13 December 2019 16:25 (four years ago) link

this is tied to billboard's women in music event that happens every year... they normally do "woman of the year." you could do a "people in music" event but there's already lots of those (several of them put on by the same company that owns billboard)

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/taylor-swift-songs-ranked-rob-sheffield-201800/?list_page=1#list-item-153

I kind of value the enthusiasm Sheffield has for Swift, though he usually gives value to things I find trivial, and overlooks her true strenghts.

E.g. Long Live might probably make my top 10, but to pick the "I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you" line when you could choose springsteenian gems such as " a band of thieves in ripped up jeans got to rule the world" or the true emotional gut punch of the song, which is "If you have children some day/When they point to the pictures/Please tell 'em my name"...IDK what to think.

Anyway, No 1 is really worth it.

Clicked away as soon as I saw “Bad Blood” came in dead last.

Inapt Authority (morrisp), Friday, 13 December 2019 20:09 (four years ago) link

"Never Grow Up" at 124 is nuts. "Don't make her drop you off around the block/Remember that she's getting older too", "Take pictures in your mind
Of your childhood room/Memorize what it sounded like/When your dad gets home", for christ's sake!

Isn't it? I just blasted it before reading this thread.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 21:40 (four years ago) link

How good this album ended up being? To me it's really high in her list.

cpl593H, Wednesday, 18 December 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link

I still skip around a lot, but it boasts more songs I love on a Taylor Swift album than any since Red if not Speak Now.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 December 2019 16:49 (four years ago) link

if the album had 12/13 songs it would be really really fantastic.

Nourry, Wednesday, 18 December 2019 17:58 (four years ago) link

this is my second favorite swift record. as with red, my favorite, i made and listened to my own edit for a few weeks, but it ended up being less charming than the complete sprawl (even when it sprawls into something bad)

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 18 December 2019 18:00 (four years ago) link

"afterglow," "false god," "death by a thousand cuts," "cornelia street," "paper rings," "i think he knows," "the archer," title track, "cruel summer" all all-time swift songs imo

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 18 December 2019 18:01 (four years ago) link

Agreed with the praise in the last few posts

Still puzzled by how "Cruel Summer" wasn't the lead single

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Wednesday, 18 December 2019 18:21 (four years ago) link

I was never much of a Swiftie before, but I really like this album. It feels much more mature and nuanced about relationships than her earlier albums; even in the breakup songs, she's less inclined to assign blame, more willing to take a hard look at her own weaknesses.

"The Archer," in particular, blows me away, esp. the moment when "They see right through me/do you see right through me/ I see right through me" feeds into "All of my enemies started out friends."

Lily Dale, Wednesday, 18 December 2019 18:21 (four years ago) link

I’m convinced there’s an early draft/diary/back of the napkin version of the archer where the lyric is “couldn’t put Taylor together again”

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 18 December 2019 18:26 (four years ago) link

I still can’t quite wrap my head around what she’s trying to say in “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince,” though. I know it’s supposed to be political, but it just reminds me of the bit in Pogo where a character claims to have been shouting “Down with the gummint” for years, but on closer examination he’s actually been shouting, “1-2-3-4, who are we for, Saint Paul High School, rah rah rah.”

Lily Dale, Wednesday, 18 December 2019 19:09 (four years ago) link

don't understand how anyone could possibly think this is a better version of Pop Taylor than 1989

ufo, Thursday, 19 December 2019 00:14 (four years ago) link

I mean, I've never actively listened to her much before, so I've clearly missed a lot of good stuff on her earlier albums. But what put me off before was a general impression of a very black-and-white, winners-and-losers vision of relationships, where she's always determined to get the last word. I'm seeing more maturity and self-examination on this album, which is why I like it. And I like the way the completely all-in, over-the-top "I'm in LUV" stuff is shot through with fear that she's going to screw it all up.

Lily Dale, Thursday, 19 December 2019 00:41 (four years ago) link

i agree completely. i would just replace "i think he knows" for "it's nice to have a friend", which is so so lovely.
and i quite enjoy "Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince", but i know i'm one of the few that like when taylor tries to pretend she's lana.

― ufo,
Firstly, she's just flat out a better singer now. I also think the highs are higher this time and no song actively bugs me (lookin' atchoo bad blood)
