Fourth World concept album??!?

insecurity bear (sic), Friday, 15 November 2019 21:16 (four years ago) link

is "adore u (beautiful game)" coming out? that was the song I did for the pre-cover album a year and a half ago

flappy bird, Friday, 15 November 2019 21:58 (four years ago) link

this is gonna be good, I'm excited now

winters (josh), Friday, 15 November 2019 22:24 (four years ago) link

i'd guess "adore u" is probably "IDORU"

ufo, Friday, 15 November 2019 23:30 (four years ago) link

well that’s also the Romaji for the Japanese rendering of “IDOL”

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Friday, 15 November 2019 23:40 (four years ago) link

the leaked "adore"'s running time also matches "IDORU"

ufo, Friday, 15 November 2019 23:58 (four years ago) link

very excited to learn that the Moodles rendition of "That's What The Drugs Are For" is now THE official version.

xxp and a William Gibson book title

it took me ages to figure out which specific new age/downtempo song "so heavy" reminded me of but I've finally got it

(the runner-up was Schiller's "I've Seen It All"; unsurprisingly I really like the grimes single, despite the past few years of grimes)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Sunday, 17 November 2019 05:40 (four years ago) link

I mean there’s been a noticeable trend of Enya-house music in the past decade and Grimes was doing variations on it even before this single. I don’t think this is Grimes following trends but rather continuing on a style she had explored previously.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 17 November 2019 05:46 (four years ago) link

oh, I'm not saying she's following trends, unless the leaked album (which I haven't heard) is full of idk billie eilish ripoffs

IDORU could also be referencing the William Gibson novel, which would be on brand with the concept of the album

octobeard, Monday, 18 November 2019 05:25 (four years ago) link

oh goddamnit I missed mh's comment.

octobeard, Monday, 18 November 2019 05:34 (four years ago) link

this is....fine? I like it better than most of her stuff but I'm still mystified as to what makes her so distinct from or so much more deserving of hype than loads of other acts working in a similar mode

like who?

ppl take her at face value a lot, anyway i enjoy her troll moves tbh

omar little, Thursday, 21 November 2019 18:40 (four years ago) link

Sure. It's "troll moves" when SHE does it :/

Cousin Slappy, Thursday, 21 November 2019 18:48 (four years ago) link

get her ass ZJ

Simon H., Thursday, 21 November 2019 18:49 (four years ago) link

xpost -- and that's the difference between her and Amanda Palmer uh hold on

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 November 2019 18:54 (four years ago) link

i believe about 5% of what grimes says about anything even her own intent, it's all pretty entertaining. anyway i like ZJ but grimes >>>>> ZJ

omar little, Thursday, 21 November 2019 18:57 (four years ago) link

I've listened to and read enough conversations that have made a similar point but not in a value-neutral way
although, tbh, with such a dystopian album concept or w/e I guess the commentary is semi-implicit
then again, maybe the dystopia is good?

hmm!

mh, Thursday, 21 November 2019 19:30 (four years ago) link

I guess she's to be taken seriously not literally like Thiel said about Trump?

Troll moves are bullshit and annoying even when done by people omar little finds attractive

I’m slowly realizing I hate all this futuristic shit. I was a huge fan of her melancholy bedroom pop—huge huge fan—and also loved her foray into exuberant art pop, which seemed life affirming and artistically brave. But this all seems weird. If it’s sincere, she’s creepy now, and if it’s a troll, what’s the point?

Speaking my truth today. I‘m just an indie fan, i don’t want to be a cyborg.

treeship., Friday, 22 November 2019 00:17 (four years ago) link

i think she's having fun deliberately saying provocative nonsense that it's not immediately obvious how serious she is about (so trolling basically) after all the frustrations she's had with the media reporting her every word in the past

ufo, Friday, 22 November 2019 00:30 (four years ago) link

Maybe idk. She seems really fascinating with the singularity and these types of techno-utopian ideas. Maybe it’s all an artistic conceit but who knows.

treeship., Friday, 22 November 2019 00:33 (four years ago) link

yeah that's the thing, she's sincerely very into that stuff but it's not clear just how much. like she obviously didn't get experimental cornea replacement surgery but how much of the rest of this stuff is a bit?

ufo, Friday, 22 November 2019 00:40 (four years ago) link

I just know it’s alienating to me as a listener

treeship., Friday, 22 November 2019 00:45 (four years ago) link

but then again she doesn’t like pandering to audience expectations/desires, and that’s been consistent

treeship., Friday, 22 November 2019 00:48 (four years ago) link

Ok i just listened to the newest one—i thought “violence” was the newest one.

It’s actually awesome. Still don’t like the singularity stuff but this is a great track.

It’s pretty clear that she’s someone who just says shit without thinking, I mean give her a mic or some space to rant and she’ll say a bunch of wild shit because I think that’s simply how her mind operates. I do doubt she’s actually trolling as much as just rambling and having fun with her thought process, without regard for what anyone else feels about it. So she says dumb stuff like about Tesla or public transit and she dates a psychopath. I won’t comment on her attractiveness pro or con, I’ll just note your first post and tell you that you shouldn’t have apologized if you really meant it, and if you didn’t you should probably just chill because it’s just grimes.

omar little, Friday, 22 November 2019 01:13 (four years ago) link

I mean I ain’t even mad I had a brief “what the—!” and then remembered it was the internet

omar little, Friday, 22 November 2019 01:17 (four years ago) link

Nah, I was being a shit, but thank you for your understanding.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Friday, 22 November 2019 04:37 (four years ago) link

Forget it, my man, just don’t get the wrong idea about me and Larry Mullen Jr next time I bump a U2 thread to defend Songs of Experience.

I think a big part of the problem is Grimes' techno-utopian shit just feels a bit naff and laughable. It's much more Sigue Sigue Sputnik/Network 7 than Blade Runner.

Position Position, Friday, 22 November 2019 16:01 (four years ago) link

the finished version of this has apparently leaked now. when was the last time an album leaked this far out?

ufo, Monday, 25 November 2019 11:46 (four years ago) link

it's... fine?

ufo, Monday, 25 November 2019 13:27 (four years ago) link

ive come to think she's being critical of tech-utopianism but her strategy is over-identification which might be an unredeemably fraught method of critique imo
