You could be right, but again, it's hard to tell. First PA death was last month. This is what the Inky said: "Pennsylvania has reported nine confirmed cases of vaping-related lung illness and a dozen probable cases. The state Health Department is investigating an additional 63 cases. Nationally, most patients had a history of vaping cannabis products, though federal investigators have yet to identify a specific product or ingredient to link all the cases. Some patients reported using only nicotine vaping products." Obv. self reporting does indeed add to the confusion.

this whole thing is absolutely fascinating to me as a public health issue....like here is something that became hugely popular in a short timeframe, is unknowable as far as long-term health effects, and has the confounding factors of thc vs. nicotine and regulated vs. unregulated. seems like a tough nut to crack.

selfishly i'm irritated because i was really enjoying easy access to thc carts before the idiot massachusetts governor went off the rails.

Apple banned vaping apps from the app store which means vape makers are probably scrambling to add hardware UI into their products.

so did they get to the bottom of this or what? haven't heard of any hospitalizations/deaths lately

frogbs, Monday, 2 March 2020 23:43 (four years ago) link

As of February 18, 2020, a total of 2,807 hospitalized EVALI cases or deaths have been reported to CDC from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and two U.S. territories (Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands). Sixty-eight deaths have been confirmed in 29 states and the District of Columbia (as of February 18, 2020).

Emergency department (ED) visits related to e-cigarette, or vaping, products continue to decline, after sharply increasing in August 2019 and peaking in September.

National ED data and active case reporting from state health departments around the country show a sharp rise in symptoms or cases of EVALI in August 2019, a peak in September 2019, and a gradual, but persistent decline since then. Reasons for the decline are likely multifactorial and may be related to the following:

Increased public awareness of the risk associated with THC-containing e-cigarette, or vaping, product use as a result of the rapid public health response.

Removal of vitamin E acetate from some products.

Law enforcement actions related to illicit products.

one month passes...

Today I started vaping, mostly to try to eliminate tobacco from my life. I’m not yet sure how I feel about it. I typically smoke about 5-10 RYOs a day, but I use king size papers, so it’s probably more like 10-12. I buy high quality baccy (Peter Stokkebye), and I also don’t use a filter, mostly because I never really mastered how to get those things to stay in there.

Anyway, I bought a Vaporesso XROS and some, uh, juices - I hate that word - and while I’m enjoying it, I’m still having the craving to smoke. I chose the 6mg nicotine. Maybe I should have started higher? How long does it take to not want to smoke an actual rollie?

I think quitting will ultimately require some kind of cognitive behavioral therapy or something, because a lot of the reason I smoke is to think and get ideas for work, especially since I started working from home. I don’t smoke in my house, so going outside for a few puffs has become a very welcome way of breaking up my day. I know a doctor would suggest I just replace the tobacco with something else (“why not drink a La Croix outside?”), but I don’t think that will work. And vaping outside would feel just like drinking a La Croix out there, I think.

I’m also not wild about the flavors I chose, even after asking the woman at the shop to recommend me some that were less candy-like and fruity, more savory (and more like tobacco, or at least coffee). I got something called Amy, manufactured by Silverback. It tastes fine but it’s too sweet.

I’m tired of ingesting thousands of gross chemicals into my lungs, having stained fingertips, and coughing. Maybe I just need to give it more time. But maybe there’s just nothing like a damn cigarette?

Reposting answer from other thread:

yeah 6mg is pretty low, that's what the "light" cigarettes have

mod, Monday, 8 August 2022 01:13 (one year ago) link

Ah, see, I think that's one of the culprits. Thanks. Any rule against topping off my current liquid with, say, an 18mg liquid to even it out?

Also, after doing some reading, I think I need more PG and less VG next time, for more of a cigarette feel and less of a viscous, fruity taste. Full disclosure I didn't know either of these terms 24 hours ago.

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 8 August 2022 01:23 (one year ago) link

As a heavy smoker (~20 a day) I use 18mg, so yeah, you definitely need to go up from 6mg. I don't think there's any reason you can't put a different liquid in the tank but not sure how well the two will blend together, you might just end up with one resting on top of the other. As for PG/VG, I use 50/50 and that seems fine to me. I mostly just buy tobacco flavour juice, but also like cherry as it's a bit 'darker' in flavour than a lot of fruit varieties.

I haven't quit smoking but I exclusively vape at home now, whereas before I was smoking up the house all the time. I definitely like it, and there are times I like it more than cigarettes (tfw you have a raging hangover and feel sick, but you're addicted to cigs, oof). However, if my charge gets low or my coil's getting old, or if I'm really concentrating on something or anxious, then it absolutely doesn't hit the same and I find myself still wanting an actual cigarette to do the job.

emil.y, Monday, 8 August 2022 01:49 (one year ago) link

I think going with the lowest nicotine available (3mg in juul pods, I was buying 3mg liquid before) helped me in the long run, cravings aren't really there if I run out of pods for a couple of days.

A friend who was at about the same pack a day of American Spirits as me went 6 then 3 and eventually 0mg liquid but kept vaping for a year on that before giving up the vape too.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 8 August 2022 02:13 (one year ago) link

This is all very helpful, thank you. I think I'm unusual in that I have no plans to eventually go down to 0mg or to stop vaping entirely. I just want to eliminate tobacco completely, and then just ride or die with nicotine forever, but it sounds like that won't be an overnight thing and I was probably dumb to think it would be. I'm just wary of adding one bad habit to an existing bad habit if I continue to vape but also still smoke. I think I'll bump up the nicotine to at least 12 or 18mg and try to keep an eye on the amount of rollies I smoke throughout the day, hopefully lowering that number bit by bit as I go.

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 8 August 2022 02:32 (one year ago) link

I recently discovered an excellent low price tobacco flavour (88Vape Tobacco Nut). It's a quid per 10ml bottle and it's actually better than many 5-6 times the price I have tried. It's nothing special nor is it particularly moreish but it mixes perfectly with other tobacco flavours when you've run out of them and lasts ages on the same coil without going rank.

I don't know if it is available outside the UK. I buy US and Malaysian brands here, but I do recall reading something about how brexit might affect UK vape product exports if they are no longer compliant to some EU directive or some shit like that.

I find sweet desert flavours are good in small doses. It actually reduces my cravings for sugary snacks and has helped me lose a bit of weight recently. A pity the alcohol flavours don't have the same effect!

two weeks pass...

Update, in case anyone is interested: I started vaping 24mg nicotine salts and it has made all the difference. The craving for cigarettes is mostly gone. I'd stop short of calling it "miraculous," because I'm still craving (and enjoying) a morning RYO with my coffee, but the fact that I'm down from ten cigs a day to one feels really good. My goal is to ultimately eliminate even the morning cig, which I realize is more of a psychological barrier than a physical one (it's just so nice sitting outside with a cup of coffee and a smoke). Anyway, just here to praise the salts. Night and day difference for me from the flavored juice stuff I tried (though the bump in nicotine is obviously the bigger factor).

I ended a 20+ cigarette habit in 2018 by moving to Juul, and then to Vuse Alto, but Vuse's quality control got really bad and their prices jumped up to where it wasn't really economical anymore. In recent months I started using a refillable pod system (Vaporesso Zero S, which is fucking GREAT!). I've found a mint juice I like (purely mint, not minty menthol), but anyone have a reco for a good coffee juice? I tried one from VaporFi that starts out pretty good but is so subtle you can barely taste it after a bit of use.

I know this is a vape thread and not an "I quit smoking" thread, but can I just say? I can smell someone light up a cigarette from, like, a mile away now and it smells terrible. I hate thinking about how I was bathed in that smell for 26 years. Also, the not coughing all the time thing is a huge bonus.

I gave up smoking 19 years ago and just yesterday was sniffing wistfully at the delicious secondhand fumes outside the train station

I switched from smoking to vaping in 2020 and never looked back. But its deveoped its own set of issues. I cough now, a lot, and I never did with cigs for some reason. I was also a "bum suck" smoker as we call it, like I'd puff on cigs but rarely inhale. With vapes you kid of have to cos of how it works, and now I find I am having dreadful nic fit headache/withdrawal urghiness cos I only vape like thrice a week (when drinking). In other words I think I'm now hooked on nicotiene and wasnt really, before? I know it sounds crazy.

I use juul and equivalents, but my fave flavovur, Pods+ iced pineapple, seems to to have disappeared much to my distress.

I find the majority of vape flavours gross - too sickly sweet, or weirdly milky, or chemical tasting. This was the only one I could stomach for long stretches. Annoying.

my buddy's 14 year old son is heavily addicted to vaping - they have to constantly search his room, and he'll purposely leave empty ones for them to find so they won't find his real stash. He has ADHD and apparently vaping really doesn't help with that condition at all

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 1 March 2023 18:32 (one year ago) link

Vaping teens piss me off. I finally get the cigarette addiction beat by switching to vapes, and then almost immediately the US Gov't puts up all these hurdles FOR THE CHILDREN I have to jump through (particularly with mail order). I guess I could start going to local vape shops for pods/liquid, but those places seem corny and/or gross.

I see a lot of youngish people buying disposables at the onestop and used ones are littered everywhere, this is deffo a boom time for the vape industry. And I noticed the UK brand Dinner Lady have expanded into the disposable market now, their Lemon Tart flavour is good btw. In the early days I was avowedly against this kind of thing and then I got addicted to nicotine again during the lockdown. Now I'm a VAPE ADDICT. Currently deciding if I should buy another Zenith II tank after my last one developed a leak after only 2 months of use.

I don't buy disposables but can understand why a lot of young people are buying them. Soaking and cleaning the tanks in between coils can be a pain in the arse. And young people don't like doing the washing up.
