I like classical curves a lot, glad to see/hear that its appeal has endured. it has a lot of space and drama

brimstead, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 00:52 (four years ago) link

Me I like Stone Island

that said, I’d prefer a single serving of you (flamboyant goon tie included), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 02:18 (four years ago) link

Classical Curves includes a very out-there mutation of instrumental grime, but it also feels like it is much more than that

Dan S, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 03:18 (four years ago) link

it stimulates some of the same pleasure centers for me as Daniel Lopatin’s music

Dan S, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 03:21 (four years ago) link

I love almost everything he’s done this decade but Dean Blunt is a hard sell for most of my friends except those who smoke weed. And even them can’t stand him more than two songs in a row. I might need to meet more people.

The Babyfather side project is also slept upon a lot. I get so offput by that offensively tacky album cover for BBF, but I give it a pass because God Hour is one of my favorite things he’s done.

One of my friends described his music as post-racial and I can kind of hear what he meant.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 06:30 (four years ago) link

never was sure what the object was that was depicted on that album cover

Rofl at suburbs number 1

flopson, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 19:08 (four years ago) link

ought debut is a classic. they made my montreal decade list

flopson, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 19:09 (four years ago) link

My friends love Ought but I’m still struggling with the vocals.

In Conflict should be many places higher, obviously. I also think the alvvays second album is better than the first, but they both belong

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 19:15 (four years ago) link

I remember at the time writing about The Suburbs on some message board (not this I am pretty sure) and wondering if all the songs sounding pleasant enough but ultimately all the same and seemingly never-ending was meant to be some sort of meta-comment on urban sprawl.

silverfish, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 19:21 (four years ago) link

that should be "(not this one I am pretty sure)"

silverfish, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 19:23 (four years ago) link

Visions is #1 imo

flopson, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 19:49 (four years ago) link

all the women side-projects are top 10. cindy lee should be on here

flopson, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 19:51 (four years ago) link

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 20:33 (four years ago) link

Very uk-centric but I like it. Lots of songs which were popular on ILM’s EOY poll and which I had even forgotten came out this decade.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 20:48 (four years ago) link

"bipp" is a worthy #1

ufo, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 22:20 (four years ago) link

Exclaim! forgot about Heartland :'(

Or maybe they didn't lol! Fuck the past

that said, I’d prefer a single serving of you (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 14 November 2019 00:30 (four years ago) link

Holy shit, two of those lists up there put DJ Rashad's Double Cup in the top 10. This warms my heart and gives me hope.

octobeard, Thursday, 14 November 2019 10:57 (four years ago) link

The music video for She A Go might be my favorite this decade.

alvvays and frankie ocean win 2010s everything else zzzzz

meaulnes, Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:34 (four years ago) link

i wonder if the Quietus is doing one. now that i might actually enjoy.

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Friday, 15 November 2019 02:41 (four years ago) link

they probably are but their recent enough "best albums of the life time of the quietus" (iirc) was really weird and atypical for them because they asked a much wider range of contributors than usual for their votes

ufo, Friday, 15 November 2019 04:19 (four years ago) link

didn't see that, but I like the idea of an atypical list

Dan S, Friday, 15 November 2019 04:23 (four years ago) link

https://thequietus.com/articles/25381-top-100-albums-of-the-quietus-existence-2008-2018-decade

this was it, atypical bc it's a bit less in line with their usual general aesthetic, and some really bizarre picks like the second travis scott album

ufo, Friday, 15 November 2019 06:53 (four years ago) link

Lololol genuine joy at 'Blue Pedro' still hanging in there in the Crack list.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 November 2019 11:36 (four years ago) link

:D that's cool! it'll def be in my list

imago, Friday, 15 November 2019 11:39 (four years ago) link

oh, i do remember that Quietus list now. i did a quick look through it at the time and was totally dismayed, so decided to just stick with their end of year hoopla.

15. A Tribe Called Red - We Are the Halluci Nation (2016)

This album is fantastic and everyone should listen to it.

Will (kruezer2), Friday, 15 November 2019 21:52 (four years ago) link

my opo Canadian album of the 10s is Mind Miniatures by Aquarian Foundation

brimstead, Saturday, 16 November 2019 00:32 (four years ago) link

interesting to see Born to Die on a number of these lists. Perhaps it's the latest addition to the "albums that were critically panned upon release but are now acclaimed" club? Or nah?

josh az (2011nostalgia), Saturday, 16 November 2019 01:14 (four years ago) link

A Tribe Called Red are really great, I've taught their music in my indigenous lit/history classes. missed their show here last year because i was ill, but heard it was phenomenal from a friend who went.

Not an ordered list, but AllMusic just put out a Decade in Review in which most of the albums featured have been upgraded to 5 Stars (with the exception of albums from 2018/2019). Some Interesting choices in there:

https://music.avclub.com/the-50-best-albums-of-the-2010s-1839776060

this one's very dull, the most interesting thing i can say about it is they confusingly put the absolute worst james blake album (overgrown) on it

ufo, Thursday, 21 November 2019 05:15 (four years ago) link

Ugh James Blake. I get his fandom even less than Frank Ocean’s.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 21 November 2019 06:23 (four years ago) link

That said, I don’t hate this list. Sure 80% of it is comprised of the “consensus” picks we’ll continue to see everywhere but it somehow feels to me like a more varied list than similar ones in its ranking and selections.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 21 November 2019 07:21 (four years ago) link

Maybe I’m just happy to see Shabazz so high in here
