i am now the #74 Silent Knee Lifter in the world! the world of people born in 1983 who are playing this game. i have traveled an astounding 386 yards in this fashion, silently lifting my knees the entire time.

This is fun and seems like a decent little workout, my son likes it a lot. I do worry about the sturdiness of the Ring Con though. It doesn't seem super tough and there's one move in the adventure mode, the Abs Guard I think, which feels as though it could break the ring if you squeeze too hard. Anyone else feeling that way?

nate woolls, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 10:46 (four years ago) link

the goal of ring fit is to become fit enough to break the ring

"Does anyone else in this gym ever worry that they are too fit and might break the equipment?"

yesterday when i was getting fit i was zoning out thinking about an elaborate twitter prank where i keep on "breaking" the ring, and i keep at-ing @nintendo to complain. gradually over several months, i claim to break about a dozen rings, and begin demanding new ones from nintendo. meanwhile, everyone on twitter is amazed because they haven't even broken a single ring

or maybe the ring fit gets you so fit that you can't grasp common objects without crushing them

there's a pose where the fitness guide person puts their right leg forward when the instructions are telling you to put your left leg forward

i know exactly which one you mean - maybe that's the mirror image? i will take a close look next time

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 17:44 (four years ago) link

i really am getting good work done on my "pecs" and triceps. i am not a guy who goes to the gym, because i don't want the other guys at the gym to stuff my in a locker when they see me struggling to pick up the 10 lb. weights. so pulling and pushing in this goddamn ring several dozen times qualifies as a really good workout for me.

ready to get ripped and then kick some shrimp puny ass if any weakling looks me in the eye!!!

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 17:46 (four years ago) link

a gym membership around here costs about 1 ring fit adventure per month, so I also don't go to the gym. we have good weather, so most people ride, run, swim, etc. I don't have any time alone for that. I generally burn ~100 kCal per morning with the ring, which isn't very much at all, but I've done it every day. it also helps you achieve some balance between the muscles you work. I'm not trying to make a big impact on my body. just trying to feel a bit more active. maybe this thing will get us through the winter, and we'll feel good about working out publicly by spring.

almost lost to the dragon at world 3. didn't realize how many smoothies would be necessary.

my doc explictly told me NOT to do this while rehabbing as it gets my arms straight over my head but i think i'm just gonna alter the exercises so that doesn't happen.
gonna have to pick back up at world 4 now

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 14 November 2019 21:30 (four years ago) link

just finished world 4 last night and unlocked my first healing exercise, which seems like a better way to go, exercise-wise, than smoothies.

i think i'm just gonna alter the exercises so that doesn't happen.

i just noticed last night that rather than individually picking your 6 exercises in adventure mode, you can choose from pre-sets (cardio, yoga, lower body, etc).

i haven't messed around in Custom mode much, but is everything unlocked from the get-go, or do you have to unlock in Adventure mode?

as a gymphobic fattey and mostly-lapsed gamer, I want one of these, but for various reasons will not be in a position to acquire one until February or so

(mostly bcz money and also I don't trust the "quiet mode" to be quiet enough not to make my downstairs neighbours want to kill me, like, even more than they probably want to kill me as I wander round my flat with what I think is a perfectly normal human gait and probably resound boomingly around their skulls)

anyway until then I look forward to watching this thread over the next 3 months to see who still plays, who completes all the modes and gets bored, how many rings are broken, who ascends to Herculean übermensch and has no more need for puny video games or messageboards, etc

I wasn't able to play yesterday bc lego movie on the tv. So I exercised outside of the game to be sure I remain ring fit.

$1,000,000 or 1 bag of honeycrisp apples (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 16 November 2019 15:21 (four years ago) link

sufjan have you tried out the thing where you squeeze/pull the ring outside of the game, irl, and it keeps track? i've only done it once so far, but i could see that being really useful sometimes.

spacecadet, i can give you some more details on the quiet mode if you're interested, because i'm in the same boat. i play exclusively using quiet mode. i live in a 2nd floor apartment with hardwood floors, and almost every single square foot of the space loudly squeaks with every step. in the game, in order to travel through levels you have to "run". in standard mode, this is done by lightly jogging in place, i think (i have never tried the normal mode). in quiet mode, you run by doing squats. my apartment is so squeaky that even squats are loud and cause some squeaking. specifically, i think that to my downstairs neighbors it sounds like sex. so they probably think i'm a sex god, because a typical play session usually lasts about half an hour.

or at least maybe they THOUGHT I was a sex god. because i managed to find one small space in my apartment that doesn't squeak. there's a spot in my living room with little columns that jut into the room a bit, and i think the downstairs neighbors have the same floor plan. in that spot, better supported by the architecture, the floor doesn't squeak. so when i play the game i move my tv a bit to face the tiny spot and do my best to stay in that area and not create sex sounds.

there are lots of moves/exercises/poses that you can unlock as you play the game. most of them are pretty quiet, involving stretching or squeezing the bejeezus out of the ring. there are also a few that involve stepping or lifting the legs a lot. luckily, you can only assign 6 moves at a time to your workout, and there are dozens of moves, so it's very easy to just avoid the loud ones.

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 November 2019 18:44 (four years ago) link

thanks, Karl, that's good to know!

btw yr neighbours told me they hope everything's ok in your personal life but at least they don't have to buy earplugs any more

a passing spacecadet, Saturday, 16 November 2019 20:11 (four years ago) link

thats good to know since i'm in a similar situation where i live below my landlord in a squeaky apt and would probably use quiet mode most of the time

my ring arrived but probably not gonna unbox it and start my routine until next week

ciderpress, Saturday, 16 November 2019 20:22 (four years ago) link

i should probably write a letter to the neighbors about the whole squeaky noise in one location in prolonged bursts thing, proactively, to address the situation.

one thing that is sad about the game: you start to get invested in smoothie recipes, working toward them and gathering the ingredients and such. meanwhile, irl, if you're like me, you're too lazy to get the smoothie ingredients so you just have to make due with water and alcohol and coffee.

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 November 2019 21:08 (four years ago) link

(which, to be clear, is my holy trinity of beverages. i'm just saying there's still a chasm between doing things within the game space and changing habits outside of the game.)

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 November 2019 21:09 (four years ago) link

I remember thinking as I grew vegetables and cooked recipes and meditated in Glitch (RIP) that it would probably be a way better use of time to learn to do the same things IRL instead

of course in the, hmm, several (eek, 7) years since Glitch disappeared I have done... neither

My wife and I have been grinding on this for a couple days. Pretty fun, and scratches that coins and medals collection itch. Looking forward to powering up and having my attacks become more exciting and ludicrous.

Tipp is pretty intense! I would love to see a video of the VO session for that guy as he does rail after rail, culminating in the most enthusiastic “yeah!” The world has ever heard as he keels over. He has made his mark and can be free.

i do wish there was an option to turn down the encouragement coach a notch! but the thing that really cracks me up is the relatively chilled out voice for the yoga-inspired exercises, which sounds like someone who has had 18 shots of espresso attempting to sound normal.

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Monday, 25 November 2019 20:25 (four years ago) link

I now wake up early so that I can put in more time before work. I was travelling a bit last week and really missed it. I'm on the second part of world 5 (or 6?) where you focus on legs, arms, and abs. It is fairly challenging (difficulty level is 28 over here, i think). I'm enjoying the mix of exercises. I had to do some kind of tree pose to fool some bugs this morning.

$1,000,000 or 1 bag of honeycrisp apples (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 25 November 2019 20:27 (four years ago) link

I enjoy the variety, but the attack power of some exercises don't feel like they scale correctly. For example, you learn an arm exercise where you hold your arms straight above your head and twist them. This is very easy but has power 80. More difficult things such as the presses are much lower power. Same thing goes for high knees vs squats and standing bend vs planking.

$1,000,000 or 1 bag of honeycrisp apples (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 25 November 2019 20:31 (four years ago) link

I end up not doing more difficult exercises simply because the attack reward is lower.

I've since found that there's a wide squat with higher attack later on. They know what they're doing. My leg hurts.

pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy the yoga stuff in this game. I've never attended a class, so this is my introduction. I also enjoy how it encourages me to stretch afterward. I never do this when exercising on my own. The skill tree is a nice later addition to keep my interesting in tactics. I grabbed an extra skill slot, but I'm now focused on the arm branch. I need a powerful arm exercise that also has some spread.

My wife got to Lvl 75 and then you unlock a skill where you can jump over enemies so you can go harvesting.

the level with the fan boxes on wheels that you can push and pull is very challenging. in ten years, competitive 'squattery' will be the most popular sport in the world.

Oh god. So I bought this early in the pandemic and finally cracked it open today.
Severely underestimated a) how brutal the first world would be and b) how massively out of shape i must be and c) how bad an idea it was to do this in 80+ degree weather without AC turned on. Wanted to die by halfway through the boss level
Seems... good I guess? But I already see exercise as masochism so

Nhex, Monday, 19 July 2021 20:06 (two years ago) link

Yeah exercise is the worst. I did Ring Fit for about 6-9 months into the pandemic and then stopped. Now I'm very out of shape. Can't wait to get back to swimming.

Feel free to adjust the difficulty, though. You don't want it so hard that you stop doing it.

DJI, Monday, 19 July 2021 20:59 (two years ago) link

Body's still sore from yesterday. Those squats! I'll try again tomorrow if my haunches aren't still aching.

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 05:19 (two years ago) link

Ok, Day 3. Still sweating like that Jordan Peele meme so I think this is working correctly.
Anyone notice the Joy-Con charge goes down really fast with this? I would expect the Right joycon (the one on the ring) to go down faster, but for me the Left one on the leg goes down to like 75% and starts randomly disconnecting around that time, only an hour roughly. The right one is at 50% at this point.
