after he’d been sentenced... maybe

before sentencing, when he was spending his time out of his cell with ladies that his lawyers were bringing in for him every day... naw

If there were things he didn’t want to come out during the trial, things which would be widely reported, I can see why he would kill himself beforehand - especially if he was confident he would be found guilty.

The main problem is the weighing the suicide against the unknown - how often do people get killed to keep them quiet. I have no idea, and it may be the case. I just find it odd that people are weighing it so easily.

It’s not the first time a CIA-linked billionaire financier has died under mysterious circumstances after they’d become an embarrassment.

Negligence in prisons isn’t quite as exciting a story though.

talking about the whole story not just his death

lag∞n, Sunday, 10 November 2019 11:33 (four years ago) link

it had been 13 years since the last suicide in the mcc, the cameras were turned off outside Epstein’s cell, and the staff decided to go for a nap instead of doing their jobs - negligence is possible but seems... a bit of a stretch that it all the failings just happened on the one night epstein decided to crush his hyoid bone

The giant rock on campus that gets painted every few days with random messages (usually in support of various student organizations or in protest of the most recent admin shitshow) has had “Epstein didn’t kill himself” on it for the past couple of days now

I don't have the clip handy, but there was a notable Jeffrey Epstein scene in this week's Evil.

Simon H., Sunday, 10 November 2019 20:16 (four years ago) link

I don't get why, when all the known facts about Epstein and his life are so bizarre and incredible, him being killed in prison somehow strains credulity

For the curious: the show is about investigators hired by the Catholic church charged with debunking or confirming miracles/possessions/etc. They meet a women who claims to be able to talk to God and give prophecy, so given the opportunity, the Aasif Mandvi character immediately uses the opportunity to ask if Epstein committed suicide and she answers "no", and that he was murdered with a pillow to protect "powerful men."

Simon H., Sunday, 10 November 2019 21:49 (four years ago) link

That doesn't qualify as "prophecy" and I doubt God would appreciate being interrogated about what an omniscient being would classify as trivia. But, hey-la, it's television.

All the Trump supporters on my Facebook feed started posting these memes daily at the same time, some of them very slickly produced, many crafted to appeal to the hard rock / heavy metal set. Makes me think this is a dry run for the 2020 meme wars. Facebook now knows who its reliable memesoldiers are.

Bnad, Friday, 15 November 2019 05:10 (four years ago) link

I'm so glad there are threads like this when I have LOTS of free time on my hands. No real opinion on whether he did or didn't kill himself but clearly this has just become another rightwing distraction and given their fixation with the Clintons it doesn't seem unlikely that their their theories will point more and more towards the connection with Bill.

The discussion of conspiracy theories mid-thread was more interesting to me. I wonder, does Russiagate qualify as a conspiracy theory?

viborg, Friday, 15 November 2019 07:40 (four years ago) link

I revived another thread to kind of talk about that! Russiagate is unusual because its a centrist pushed conspiracy, and usually centrists aren't predisposed to conspiracies. Its quite an overtly top down conspiracy. The more left or right you go the more you're going to believe things aren't as presented (leading down some strange paths sometimes), centrism is kind of the opposite of that, that things are generally as they appear and/or problems are out in the open

anvil, Friday, 15 November 2019 07:59 (four years ago) link

Russiagate in general wasn't a conspiracy, in that 90% of it was true.

Frederik B, Friday, 15 November 2019 08:23 (four years ago) link

Whether a conspiracy theory is true or not has no bearing on whether it is a conspiracy theory. Some conspiray theories are true, and some conspiracy theories are not true.

This isn't about the veracity of any particular theory, but about predisposition towards them

anvil, Friday, 15 November 2019 08:36 (four years ago) link

Lol, ok. But even then, the bulk of Russiagate, that Russians were interfering in the election, and that Trump encouraged them at the very least, was pretty clear from summer 2016. So that was probably why a lot of people believed it. The interesting question is more why so many people furiously denied it and helped the Russians in spreading the material. I think those people had more of a conspiratorial mindset.

Frederik B, Friday, 15 November 2019 08:53 (four years ago) link

That should really not be controversial, a lot of people seemed to think Russiagate was thought up by Dem elites and the Deep State to undo the will of the people. That's the conspiracy here.

Frederik B, Friday, 15 November 2019 08:55 (four years ago) link

for better or worse, the phrase “conspiracy theory” near-universally means a crackpot or impossible one, and Fred - a very clear writer but in a second language, able to fudge the odd nuance - was here using the first word in context of the whole phrase

Prince Andrew's being interviewed on a Newsnight special tomorrow night. It's the BBC, so unlikely to be incredibly uncomfortable, but it'll be interesting to see how far they'll be permitted to go.

One assumes - but there's also a theory that he's so bang-to-rights, there's a political value in making him out to be at least moderately accountable in public to lessen the perception that the Royal Family and government have been running interference for him.
