Oh hello there Bay Area, I'm headed your way on x-mas day, staying until I think Jan 1? Got a hotel deal in SoMa but that will just be sleeping place; we'll spend a good chunk of time East Bay scoping out neighborhoods for Becoming Californian in approx 2021.

I have some Oakland/Berkely questions, should I ask them here or in the Oakland thread (which is currently addressing far more significant topics than Becoming Californian)?

FAPs on either/both sides of the bay between xmas and new year?

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 1 December 2019 18:25 (four years ago) link

I guess one thing to work out is how to spell Berkeley.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 1 December 2019 18:26 (four years ago) link

Oakland thread more appropriate for the East Bay questions, yes. I of course selfishly would like to suggest the FAP be over here but am content to BART over as needed. Best days for me would be anywhere from Dec. 28 to 30.

Would love to see you, quincie! Do you have my email address?

I can't go but Grouper's at the Lab as Nivhek on the solstice. Also at the Lab tomorrow night (Sunday) is the second of 2 nights of an Eliane Radigue tribute series. Tonight was a listening party of Trilogie de la Mort.

yep me too

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 20:13 (four years ago) link

Same here! Say something in my direction if you see me.

Should go to Nivhek but that'll be after a couple of very exhausting days. Will play it by ear on the day.

Also: I picked up two tickets for the Uncut Gems advance screening with a Q&A with the Safdies tomorrow night at 7 at the Alamo in the Mission. Unfortunately my girlfriend figures she can't make it -- if anyone's interested? The ticket itself is free; the cost was $10 as an advance on any food ordered.

I walked by that thing all the time - the funniest thing was that sure, the robot made yr coffee, but there was also a human standing by at all times (presumably to tend to the robot)?

let me amend that: almost everyone quoted who failed to even mention prop 13 in passing can fuck right off.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 21:59 (four years ago) link

it's amazing to me that as this state has become completely blue that Prop 13 repeal is - still! - never on the table

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 22:01 (four years ago) link

so much so that people engaged to bloviate about housing seem to forget it even exists! "what's water" etc etc... but it's maddening and kmc has been one of the few clear voices on this over the past 10 years or so. how she found an outlet at techcrunch of all places is also a mystery to me.

Surprised it survived this long but still a major loss. Amnesia is closing soon, too. Unclear what will become of the new space.

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 22:38 (four years ago) link

Amnesia I don't care so much about - I knew the previous owners and assumed it was a zombie space as soon as they packed up with their kid to "spend a year in Mexico" (they never came back)

Lennon we patronized way back when and definitely found useful, but it was kind of hard going and inconvenient. Secret Studios and Lightrail are both way better.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 22:42 (four years ago) link

Amnesia also looks like its keeping its liquor+ performance license so they're probably just looking for new owners.

Is it possible to be a mayor of a large city without being totally corrupt? Examples?

DJI, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:13 (four years ago) link

How do you define "large city"? Oakland has had some only semi-corrupt mayors, but in my mind, it is a mid-size city. One could argue, however, that San Francisco is also not a large city. Fortunately gabbneb no longer posts here.

sarahell, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:15 (four years ago) link

seems like the most you can expect is for mayors to be corrupt in ways that benefit the right people (ie not the rich and powerful)

Οὖτις, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:17 (four years ago) link

expect? maybe "hope for"

Οὖτις, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:17 (four years ago) link

Willie Brown set the bar pretty high re: corrupt SF mayors -- like, a good test of exceptional corruption would be: Is the current mayor even more corrupt than Willie Brown?

sarahell, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:20 (four years ago) link

nah, that's a high bar
