there isn't really a good explanation for why people started letting him manage their money in the first place. he started his fund with the provision that investors needed to put up, at minimum, a billion dollars--this is when he was relatively unknown. and he found investors.
― treeship., Sunday, 10 November 2019 02:02 (four years ago) link
its seems completely reasonable given the known facts of the case
― lag∞n, Sunday, 10 November 2019 02:02 (four years ago) link
tho i doubt ppl were actual giving him a billion at a time
― lag∞n, Sunday, 10 November 2019 02:03 (four years ago) link
the details of his business are still really opaque. that's the legend at least.

It feels like there are two versions of the Epstein meme. The serious version that lefties and righties alike are sharing because they want it investigated.
And then the RickRoll version which is apolitical and played for shits and giggles
― Jordan Pickford LOLverdrive (Neanderthal), Sunday, 10 November 2019 02:07 (four years ago) link
it was his marketing but i bet he was taking in much smaller amounts, not many ppl have a billion dollars just to throw around not even billionaires, tho obvs much smaller amounts than a billion can still be huge piles of money, one theory i read was that given reports that no one really did any deals w him is he was just putting the money in index funds thereby actually generating dece returns for his investors, maybe sort of a soft blackmail, or for a lot of them not really blackmail at all, more of a prostitution ring
― lag∞n, Sunday, 10 November 2019 02:10 (four years ago) link
tho more than that like he was offering access to a lifestyle that these guys thought they shd be living, hes one of them not some pimp or whatever except hes doing it like in the movies young girls all around him
― lag∞n, Sunday, 10 November 2019 02:18 (four years ago) link
which is not to say he didnt make tapes or just generally know incriminating things but as long as everyone was cool it was all blase blah

my read
and im sure most of the guys he mingled with never did anything w the girls, but they knew they were available if they wanted

It seems implausible that Epstein and Maxwell weren’t part of an intelligence operation. There are a number of different rabbit holes around the Maxwell family, not just Robert and Ghislaine.

the thing about this compared to every conspiracy theory ever it is requires no fake goofy bullshit to glue it together, theres no jet fuel cant melt steel beams or the illuminati required, the screw loose change of epstein is the new york times

the thing abt this turning into a meme is i think almost everyone joking around about it also believes it to be shady as shit, because it just so obviously iscosine. the rickrolling is only happening because it's basically all we've got left. Most of the people who believe it was murder don't have any faith that the continuing investigation into the pedo ring will be legit and there's nothing we can do about it. It's just this absurd obvious thing that we'll be told to forget about until we eventually do and the only recourse left is to turn it into a punchline, hoping the meme will catch fire and keep enough spotlight on the case as it unfolds that it'll (maybe?) be harder for Ghislaine to slip on a banana peel in her cell or whatever.

― StanM, Sunday, 10 November 2019 04:53 (four years ago) link
I have no idea how to evaluate it. I’ve experienced someone killing themselves while on suicide watch in a psychiatric hospital, and prisons are worse at mental health care than that.
So weighing up the odds that a man facing prison for child abuse kills himself against the idea that people in power may have had interests in killing him etc.
I’m not sure that the suicide story doesn’t hold the balance of probabilities.

after he’d been sentenced... maybe before sentencing, when he was spending his time out of his cell with ladies that his lawyers were bringing in for him every day... naw

If there were things he didn’t want to come out during the trial, things which would be widely reported, I can see why he would kill himself beforehand - especially if he was confident he would be found guilty.
― Bidh boladh a' mhairbh de 'n láimh fhalaimh (dowd), Sunday, 10 November 2019 09:24 (four years ago) link
The main problem is the weighing the suicide against the unknown - how often do people get killed to keep them quiet. I have no idea, and it may be the case. I just find it odd that people are weighing it so easily.

it had been 13 years since the last suicide in the mcc, the cameras were turned off outside Epstein’s cell, and the staff decided to go for a nap instead of doing their jobs - negligence is possible but seems... a bit of a stretch that it all the failings just happened on the one night epstein decided to crush his hyoid bone

For the curious: the show is about investigators hired by the Catholic church charged with debunking or confirming miracles/possessions/etc. They meet a women who claims to be able to talk to God and give prophecy, so given the opportunity, the Aasif Mandvi character immediately uses the opportunity to ask if Epstein committed suicide and she answers "no", and that he was murdered with a pillow to protect "powerful men."
― Simon H., Sunday, 10 November 2019 21:49 (four years ago) link
That doesn't qualify as "prophecy" and I doubt God would appreciate being interrogated about what an omniscient being would classify as trivia. But, hey-la, it's television.
