what is shadier than the death is that "sweetheart" deal he got in 08, when he was basically allowed to go home from prison during the day and molest people. and the prosecutor (acosta) said he was told "epstein belongs to intelligence."

huh, somehow i missed that -- and this came out even before his death. i don't even know what to make of that.

i don't think it's absurd to speculate he was running a blackmail ring. and that "intelligence" caught wind of it and used it for their purposes--leaning on powerful people they needed favors for.

there isn't really a good explanation for why people started letting him manage their money in the first place. he started his fund with the provision that investors needed to put up, at minimum, a billion dollars--this is when he was relatively unknown. and he found investors.

its seems completely reasonable given the known facts of the case

tho i doubt ppl were actual giving him a billion at a time

the details of his business are still really opaque. that's the legend at least.

It feels like there are two versions of the Epstein meme. The serious version that lefties and righties alike are sharing because they want it investigated.

it was his marketing but i bet he was taking in much smaller amounts, not many ppl have a billion dollars just to throw around not even billionaires, tho obvs much smaller amounts than a billion can still be huge piles of money, one theory i read was that given reports that no one really did any deals w him is he was just putting the money in index funds thereby actually generating dece returns for his investors, maybe sort of a soft blackmail, or for a lot of them not really blackmail at all, more of a prostitution ring

tho more than that like he was offering access to a lifestyle that these guys thought they shd be living, hes one of them not some pimp or whatever except hes doing it like in the movies young girls all around him

Most of the people who believe it was murder don't have any faith that the continuing investigation into the pedo ring will be legit and there's nothing we can do about it. It's just this absurd obvious thing that we'll be told to forget about until we eventually do and the only recourse left is to turn it into a punchline, hoping the meme will catch fire and keep enough spotlight on the case as it unfolds that it'll (maybe?) be harder for Ghislaine to slip on a banana peel in her cell or whatever.

I have no idea how to evaluate it. I’ve experienced someone killing themselves while on suicide watch in a psychiatric hospital, and prisons are worse at mental health care than that.

So weighing up the odds that a man facing prison for child abuse kills himself against the idea that people in power may have had interests in killing him etc.

I’m not sure that the suicide story doesn’t hold the balance of probabilities.

If there were things he didn’t want to come out during the trial, things which would be widely reported, I can see why he would kill himself beforehand - especially if he was confident he would be found guilty.

The main problem is the weighing the suicide against the unknown - how often do people get killed to keep them quiet. I have no idea, and it may be the case. I just find it odd that people are weighing it so easily.

It’s not the first time a CIA-linked billionaire financier has died under mysterious circumstances after they’d become an embarrassment.

it had been 13 years since the last suicide in the mcc, the cameras were turned off outside Epstein’s cell, and the staff decided to go for a nap instead of doing their jobs - negligence is possible but seems... a bit of a stretch that it all the failings just happened on the one night epstein decided to crush his hyoid bone
