Inadvertently helping the Russians in getting Trump elected was a pretty big mistake imo. And kinda hard to make up for. But his Brazilian reporting (which of course is done with others) is very good and could do it.
― Frederik B, Saturday, 9 November 2019 16:01 (four years ago) link
you can't "make up for" something by doing something completely different, because people don't have scorecards and there's no afterlife, but "the russians" were such a vanished drop-in-the-bucket factor in what we have done to ourselves i can't imagine how infinitesimally responsible someone who only helped them was

p sure i personally deserve a greater share of blame for what happened just by being a citizen (as does greenwald)

GG has voiced plenty of opinions that i disagree with but i can think of no scenario, literally none, in which any of those opinions had a noticeable effect on the outcome of the 2016 election
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Saturday, 9 November 2019 19:04 (four years ago) link
Ok, but by that standard his new reporting isn't that important anyway, because Bolsanaro is mostly being defeated by his own idiocy. It's a pretty pathetic excuse that Greenwald helping Russians elect Trump probably didn't turn the election. It was a stupid thing to do anyway, and pretty obviously stupid at the moment.
― Frederik B, Sunday, 10 November 2019 10:27 (four years ago) link
And the only reason they did it was that they thought Clinton was sure to be elected anyway. Publishing a private persons emails which had been hacked by Russian intelligence was straightforwardly indefensible from a leftist website concerned with privacy. But, y'know, he was probably going to be chief of staff?
― Frederik B, Sunday, 10 November 2019 10:28 (four years ago) link
both the inputs and outputs of our social lives are so highly mediated that alleging (let alone proving) any actor's level of causation is a not always a best eval. you can fall back to "reasonable duty of care" sort of shit. who wants that. people want to ~know~ who did what.
(then suddenly youre gavrilo princip and this car pulls around the corner with an assload of hillary's emails and that shit needs to be distributed.)

So you admit that you SHAMELESSLY and RECKLESSLY posted a SPURIOUS hope for an event that you KNEW had NO POSSIBILITY of ever happening, and arrogantly expected it to go totally UNCHALLENGED, probably due to your vast and unreported connections to FBI, CIA, NSA, NSC, and their media stooges!

Sure. But the kids especially. I heard greenwald on a poscast talk about how the extraordinarily homophobic bolsonaro regime uses them as a talking point—you know, calling for the state to “investigate” their parenting. That was the impetus behind the televised “fistfight” a few months ago. Very frightening.

A journalist appearing on Tucker Carlson in 2019 will warp even the most sympathetic liberal listener.
Like I've written many times, I've quoted thousands of his words and between 2005-2009 there was no better chronicler of the Bush administration's malfeasance. He was occasionally good on Obama's extralegal killings too. He's among the five reasons to quit reading Twitter, though.

i don't think the kind of ppl whose response to this is basically "good, he deserves it, he's a fascist too" were ever particularly sympathetic to greenwald's writing or his focus on civil liberties. i don't think they have much love for snowden either.
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 00:02 (four years ago) link
This is getting off-topic. Greenwald is a gay man with a family living in a country with a head of state as awful as Trump, and despite his reporting on the evil of Bolsanaro he appears on Tucker Carlson railing against Dems' Russia obsession and to throw a blanket on ways to prosecute him. But for fuck's sake to be charged for crimes by Brazil's government is no excuse to crow.

this is disturbing. i was uncomfortable with 'russiagate' at first, but tried to keep an open mind. but it does seem now like it was an enormous ruse that completely deflected real, political opposition to trump in favor of a fantasy that he was a manchurian candidate. also, to make it even worse, the thing that motivated the intelligence officials that started this wasn't fear of trump's authoritarianism but rather their concern that he wouldn't be hawkish enough. something similar could happen to a left wing candidate and it was starting to -- the washington post, for a while, was floating some intelligence that russia preffered bernie to the other candidates.

whatever you think of flynn, (i think he is an authoritarian, islamophbic ghoul), and whatever you think of trump, this is a very, very bad look for the 'resistance.'
the most absurd part of this is that trump eventually did 'collude' with a foreign power -- ukraine! and he was impeached for that! so it was all completely for nothing.
