Cool. I enjoyed the first batch, so started listening, and before I knew it I had a Spotify playlist again! ( https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3SOnXSymRFa1sIQb2vyla5 ) Can easily substitute recordings in response to recommendations...

Thanks, Nag! I'll suggest a few recordings as soon as I can.

Erlkönig is my favourite

Inclination toward my beloved piano sonata op. 101 or my obsessed-over op. 109

But fucking erlkonig

And also tempting to garland the caprices for enabling Liszt

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 7 November 2019 12:45 (four years ago) link

voted hammerklavier, though obviously the trout quintet is a good one as well

i'll let everyone else be challopsy

tantric societal collapse (rushomancy), Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:32 (four years ago) link

The Op. 102 Cello Sonatas are underrated af. Rostropovich/Richter is all time, but I go back to Miklós Perényi and András Schiff more often.

pomenitul, Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:35 (four years ago) link

But yeah, the non-challopsy pick is definitely the Hammerklavier imo.

pomenitul, Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:36 (four years ago) link

(Pollini's recording, of course.)

pomenitul, Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:37 (four years ago) link

It's a silly reason, but I have to vote for An Die Ferne Geliebte. I can't get over how masterfully it's used in Jessica Hausner's Amour Fou.

Frederik B, Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:38 (four years ago) link

An die ferne Geliebte is a perfectly respectable choice, Fred.

On an unrelated note, I wonder what Sund4r makes of the Fernando Sor.

pomenitul, Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:40 (four years ago) link

The adagio of Piano Concerto No. 5 is pretty much my favourite music right now.

jmm, Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:41 (four years ago) link

x-post: Yeah, but I just love it because it's used for what's basically cringe comedy in one of my favorite films :)

Frederik B, Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:41 (four years ago) link

(Pollini's recording, of course.)

sure but schnabel's is worth listening to for the contrast at least

tantric societal collapse (rushomancy), Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:44 (four years ago) link

Oh, definitely. Schnabel's entire set is utterly fascinating from beginning to end.

pomenitul, Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:56 (four years ago) link

the piece isn't the best one on here, but there's still nothing like watching a virtuosic violinist perform 24 caprices.

pollini is fine but my top 5 hammerklaviers are thus:

francois-frederic guy (his earlier 2006 one, not the one that's part of a complete cycle)
grigory sokolov (there's an mfsl remastering of this on the webs btw)
arrau
annie fischer
richter (london 1975)

sentimental shout out to Gould whose slow and not well recorded but totally riveting radio recording was my first (listened about 100x)

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 7 November 2019 15:31 (four years ago) link

Fairly obvious choice but Il barbiere di Siviglia is an eternal delight.

Is there a reason why Beethoven didn't write another string quartet for 15 years?

i seem to remember he got really committed to child abuse for a while there

i like the one he recorded about a week prior to that, know if there are any significant differences?

tantric societal collapse (rushomancy), Friday, 8 November 2019 00:32 (four years ago) link

oh and the rzewski recording with the cadenzas in is also pretty interesting...

tantric societal collapse (rushomancy), Friday, 8 November 2019 00:32 (four years ago) link

On an unrelated note, I wonder what Sund4r makes of the Fernando Sor.

I've never played it but I just listened to a couple of versions while following the score and I kind of want to. This performance by Ana Vidovic is really good imo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaEcDgxm8es . (Listen to the Segovia if you want shred but it doesn't connect with me the same way, although it could just be feelings of inadequacy speaking.)

When we get to the 1830s, Fantaisie Elegiaque would be a definite contender for me. I love the "Marche Funebre" (which I do play).

I generally find Sor satisfying in all his stodgy formalism. He didn't especially push the envelope compositionally but he wrote clear, well-crafted expressive music in the classical idiom that flows well on the instrument. He works well with the source material here imo and I do like how he uses triplets and sextuplets.

No language just sound (Sund4r), Friday, 8 November 2019 03:29 (four years ago) link

Anyway, I'm actually leaning towards "Erlkönig" atm.

No language just sound (Sund4r), Saturday, 9 November 2019 20:50 (four years ago) link

Vidovic's performance is suitably unassuming, very much in keeping with Sor's classicism (which, incidentally, may be why I find his music enjoyable but overly guarded, as though La Folia had to be kept at bay).

I might just go with one of the Cello Sonatas – possibly my favourite works from the purgatorial period between his Middle and Late Styles (which I have likely just made up tbf).

pomenitul, Sunday, 10 November 2019 17:15 (four years ago) link

And if you're in a Paganini mood, Agustin Hadelich is a fucking terrific wild-eyed violonista.

pomenitul, Sunday, 10 November 2019 17:21 (four years ago) link

Sor's music is totally restrained and guarded, yeah, which is part of its elegance for me.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 14 November 2019 04:17 (four years ago) link

Turns out I wasn't the only one voting for 'Der Tod und das Mädchen'!

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 14 November 2019 08:34 (four years ago) link

I like these results. No one brought up the 7th Symphony in the comments, so I'm a little bit surprised, but it's an unfuckwithable pick.
