Can we unban Turrican and welcome him back to this board already?

it's an unfortunate truth that inflammatory / faux-naive / facile challop posts tend to prompt more responses from other users than thoughtful, carefully argued ones. Engaging in the former alone isn't enough to have someone banned, but accepting the proposition that we should welcome turrican back b/c he starts longer conversations would be indulging in our own collective worst tendencies as well as excusing his.

he wasn't faux naive

He was legit naive?

Jordan Pickford LOLverdrive (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 6 November 2019 03:52 (four years ago) link

yeah he wasn't a savvy, subtle thinker in my view

it's not like there were depths of sophistication he was concealing with his bad posts

the reason i brought it up is because he had been around for, i think, 12 plus years. he was a big part of this board and was different in those days. maybe reminiscing about days gone by, i don't know...

i remember him being a relatively interesting poster a long time ago. in the last year or so i’ve gone into several music threads to contribute something, seen him trashing the thread just to scream his opinion at people, and left in despair.

12 plus years is roughly the same amount of time it took me to evolve from argumentative and sometimes belligerent to calm and respectful. can’t see an argument for going the other way tbh.

he had been around for, i think, 12 plus years

If he was it wasn't as Turrican and, even as Turrican, he didn't go into full obnoxious mode till the last few years.

In 12 years I give him credit for pointing out the resemblance between Bowie's "Weeping Wall" (I think?) and the Mothers of Invention's "Who Are the Brain Police", but that's about it.

Here comes the story of Turrican
The man the authorities came to ban
For something that he never done
(Submitted a not terrible or tedious post)

vanjie wail (qiqing), Wednesday, 6 November 2019 08:25 (four years ago) link

Hi Bee - I'm speaking in a personal capacity here and not as the voice of the mods or anything but I don't see a particularly compelling reason to unban Turrican and several good reasons not to.

First up - it's quite an achievement to get yourself 51ed twice in a year in the current ILX climate. Even our most divisive or combative posters haven't managed that. There's clearly some strength of feeling there from the community. That in itself wouldn't be enough to earn a permanent or long term ban, but...

Researching ur life type ad hominem attacks have been a red line here for years, they're all over the rest of the Internet and we have good reasons not to want to enable them here. It's just creepy, particularly when you're resorting to them to win an argument over a 26 year old Radiohead album and attacking another poster's creative work in the progress.

Thirdly, Turrican has never shown himself to be an apologetic poster or one who has shown a great deal of self-reflection or humility over the years and no apology has been forthcoming here either. What reason is there to believe he'd behave differently this time round?

Also it's likely to really piss Brad off and I wouldn't want to lose him as a poster as he really *does* drive a lot of discussion and start a lot of threads, and generally in a positive and enthusiastic and non dickish manner. Leaving aside the fact that it's likely to upset him - if we're doing cold hard calculations based on the discursive value of the two posters them I'm sorry then it's not going to be Turrican who comes out the winner.

Also a word on that point about driving the discussion. I felt like Turrican's thread derailments regularly made ILM feel like a more belligerent, stupid and frankly boring place. And that's the sort of thing that drives good, valuable posters to just give up, and puts would-be posters off staying. Usually without any big statement or histrionics, they just quietly stop. And that's the sort of thing that really drains ILM of its vitality.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 09:04 (four years ago) link

he did go over the line and get why he was banned but we need him more than what sour taste he left behind

I don't think we need him at all tbf. He was tedious and went way over the line w/ Brad. Getting 51'd twice is quite an achievement these days. There's a reason he got himself kicked off the board.

Yeah, bringing personal lives and work into yr argument is beyond the pale.

Uh plenty of ppl have done this and not been banned for more than 30 days, if that. It seems hypocritical to use that as an excuse to not unban him ... assuming he actually wants to return?

I did my fair share of trolling him, and would probably do so again if he returns and is sufficiently obnoxious.

sarahell, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 10:40 (four years ago) link

yeah i don't really think bringing offboard stuff into a stupid fucking radiohead argument is a commutable offense

As opposed to the dozens if not hundreds of equally stupid arguments where other posters have done the same thing?
Do we need a thread where we c&p all the posters who have done it and non-deleted documentation of this?
The fact that (iirc) what Turrers said was borderline transphobic... yeah, that’s an actually legit criterion.

There isn't a one-size-fits-all rule for each and every poster, you have to take their wider behaviour into account, but go ahead and lawyer away if it makes you feel better.

put me on the horrible thread for revealing that turrican is scottish blairite activist and advisor and massive stranglers fan john mcternan, this is canon and the only thing to shake my conviction is that mcternan is generally quite affable on twitter with his foes despite his bad politics

mark s, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 11:43 (four years ago) link

iirc his previous 51 was not about him personally attacking my work outside this board so maybe instead of considering his banning a referendum on all personal attacks on ilx ever maybe just think of it as the last shitty thing he did

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 November 2019 11:43 (four years ago) link

it is a bit of a shame about turrican. sometimes he would be good value on threads about unfashionable british guitar music. he really didn't need to be such a dickhead. but he persisted. and here we are.

besides i don't want him going for my fp record

imago, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 11:44 (four years ago) link

It feels more honest to say that Turrers was a shitty poster that few people feel warmly towards than to hide behind the “bringing personal info into a discussion” argument.

Granted yeah, it’s obviously not one size fits all because some posters (me included) who have had personal stuff thrown at them, some of us don’t have the “cleanest hands” to begin with and I wouldn’t blame anyone really for less sympathy from mods than when the shitty behavior is directed at a nicer poster

sarahell, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 11:45 (four years ago) link

Xxxpost Yeah people were sick of his shit for ages, it wasn't just one thing. He seemed to feed off of the hatred, like GG Allin but with less poop.

Jordan Pickford LOLverdrive (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 6 November 2019 11:45 (four years ago) link

until the Brad stuff his most egregious crime was incurious rockism in an era where such a thing felt aesthetically and morally unthinkable on ilm

imago, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 11:47 (four years ago) link

He owes Brad a proper apology. That would be the first hypothetical step.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 11:48 (four years ago) link

I would jokingly suggest he is confined to ILTMI (to continue the GG Allin metaphor) but he would probably be dully prescriptive about sex and bodily functions so no

sarahell, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 11:48 (four years ago) link

prob uncharitable of me but after consciously interacting with him on this board for idk five years, i do not care to receive an apology from him

until the Brad stuff his most egregious crime was incurious rockism

Egregious according to which court? I think his worst crime pre-Brad was being a poor sport when we would c&p his posts into unrelated threads

sarahell, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 11:56 (four years ago) link

the problem wasn't his opinions, it's that he would gridlock this entire board with his opinions

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 November 2019 11:59 (four years ago) link

Fair enough, Brad. I'm just saying that in the absence of so much as a minimal gesture of good will towards you after his doxxological bullshit, I see no reason to reinstate his board privileges.

Incidentally, lj is right to point out that the tacit criminalization of rockism is an injustice but that is a different trial altogether.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 12:00 (four years ago) link
