what are the good video game websites? i'm allergic to places like kotaku. i check out rockpapershotgun sometimes tho it's uneven, eurogamer (but also uneven)...

tbh ILG is my primary game website and has sold me on buying more things than anywhere else maybe ever

I think the best way to do it these days is to just follow a lot of indie game devs on twitter

eurogamer reviews are uneven but the writers there at least attempt to situate the games into some kind of genre context, explain how it fits into the culture, etc - most other reviews just feel like recaps

ilg is good but really isn't large enough to really be sufficient. lots of new interesting games we don't get around to at all or not until much later. i found dice dungeons through steam by accident (i was like a new terry cavvanaugh game??? how did i not hear about this?) it was great but no one here had mentioned it. curious about like disco elysium but i don't think anyone here has played it. i don't think anyone has played frostpunk. idk it seems like there's a lot of probably worthwhile games that we just don't have the numbers + dedication to cover just in the course of talking. has anyone played the new age of wonders (planetfall)? i do have to thank ilg for clueing me into Control an okay fun game <thumbsup>

nb even if i knew disco elysium was amazing sadly it's pc-only atm. but frostpunk is now on the ps4!

probably 5 of my "top ten gaming moments" are from metal gear solid games so yalls death stranding doomsaying is just fueling my anticipation. watch this space as i liveblog my unfolding disappointment

i'm not even a metal gear / kojima fan and i think death stranding looks cool. just not as cool as my jrpg backlog

I misread "jrpg backlog" as "rpg backpack," which seems kinda like what Death Stranding is.

(I've never played any Metal Gear Solid games and long assumed that dude was just some GI Joe character I got to play as in Smash Bros.)

I just restarted phantom pain and it remains great fun

it's the least good of the metal gear series but it's still awesome, the balloon shit is so funny every time

The red flag for me is that even the wildly positive reviews have some serious (or at least alarming) contradictions. "Is it fun? Well, no, but ..." "It takes about 20 hours before you finally ... " "It's like if Breath of the Wild were boring on purpose," and so on. Honestly, from what I've seen or read of it it doesn't even look that weird, imo, by video game standards, and all the actors/celebrity cameos seem ... distracting. Plus, it appears very long stretches of the game (most of it?) are about balancing a bunch of stuff on your back while you traverse rough terrain, soothing your upset baby and repairing your shoes.

Which is a way of saying I look forward to hearing what some of you think of it.

i played for four+ hours last night and i didn't kill anyone. it didn't even come up. how often do you see that in gazillion-dollar non-nintendo games?

esp compared to the frankly unpleasant grand guignol opening of mgs5

Obviously there is plenty of "killing" in Nintendo games, there's just a notable lack of blood, a la a lot of Marvel movies.

Man, somewhere I saw a recommendation of "The Evil Within," so I watched a bit of the opening, and it's literally like watching a torture porn movie, and I thought to myself, man, who wants to play this shit?

based on what i've read of death stranding it's v hard to believe i'll enjoy it (so many "yes it's a walking simulator but a good one" comments) but i'm still curious. maybe it'll be $15 one day soon.

I have spent a considerable amount of time in the game now, and killing people has yet to really be a thing.

I did spend a fair amount of time deviating from the main quests to steal a truck, load it with all the materials I could find, and reconstruct a large segment of road. I think reviewers may have underestimated the number of signs and likes you could receive from other players, because my status level jumped a ton during the day as things I constructed showed up in other games and were well-received

i did tie a mule dude up with a strand while i ransacked his lair.
