Gawker was too much too soon, but would fit right into today's media (and political) landscape.

I feel like everyone left at Jezebel, The Root, and even Gizmodo/Kotaku/Jalopnik is just working with the sword of damocles over their head. What a stupid timeline.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 31 October 2019 20:49 (four years ago) link

yeah, borrowed time for all of them for sure :(

Anyways, I’m done writing for Deadspin (being a permalancer means there’s no official resignation process) so if you’re interested in hiring someone to do some sports writing/blogging hit my line: gabe.fernandez1819 @ gmail dot com

I just... I mean I get it, these people are vainglorious fools still tilting at AOL but the irony of a bunch of circle-jerking Old New Media Guys completely and pointedly failing to understand what made Deadspin the most vital sports-adjacent publication left standing...

like fuck guys, if you wanted to build a vortal you coulda just bought yahoo and really dominated 1999

Gawker was too much too soon, but would fit right into today's media (and political) landscape.

it absolutely was not. Gawker “would fit right into today’s media landscape” because it was the Spy of 2004-2005 and its approach, tone and talent tree largely defined “today’s media landscape.”

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Friday, 1 November 2019 01:47 (four years ago) link

This really does have an end-of-an-era feel to it.

This week, as one staffer after another quit, I couldn’t help but think of one of the first Deadspin-induced moments of journalistic anxiety. In 2008, author Buzz Bissinger faced off with Will Leitch, the site’s founder, on HBO. Bissinger freaked out that real, honest-to-god reporters like him were being undercut and replaced by snotty bloggers.

The critique isn’t worth revisiting. But think about this: Now we’ve lost the snotty bloggers. The kind of churn Bissinger feared has decimated two separate categories of sportswriters. And it ain’t over.

jaymc, Friday, 1 November 2019 03:44 (four years ago) link

then they came for the snotty bloggers and we said nothing

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 1 November 2019 04:27 (four years ago) link

The difference is that bloggers were always aspiring journalists where as the current web “journalism“ is meant to feed the algorithm Of digital capitalism

Yes that’s a much tighter way to phrase that

A pal of mine was just extolling the virtues of this subscription sports site, The Athletic. I've never heard of it, but I guess people like it?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 November 2019 12:04 (four years ago) link

And with that, it's over. Deadspin no longer employs a single writer or editor. I am gutted but so very proud of this group of people.

Deadspin was a good website.

wow

I stand with the former @Deadspin workers who decided not to bow to the greed of private equity vultures like @JimSpanfeller. This is the kind of greed that is destroying journalism across the country, and together we are going to take them on.

mookieproof, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:59 (four years ago) link

Gosh that was poor. It's the kind of un-self-aware personality-less filler that characterises Forbes' output. The writer doesn't seem to be familiar with Deadspin or even understand the nature of freelance work. He argues that the site's freelancers should have swallowed their pride and written about sports - or if they didn't want to do that they should leave, which is what they did. Even his attempt to characterise Deadspin's writers as as bunch of woke social justice warriors felt half-hearted. A good writer would have at least chucked in a couple of examples of some bad writing at Deadspin.
