Let's talk about BoJack Horseman, the new Netflix animated series (starring Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Amy Sedaris, Aaron Paul, etc)

EATEOT is potentially a really good reference point. Everyone is full of false memories and personalities and it's starting to unravel with some actual real memories creeping through that add to the plot for the observer but not the protagonist.

I thought we'd finally got the story of the make-up artist - which I think is still going to come - but it was just as another enabler.

I didn't mean not many laughs in a bad way, but the count feels slightly down. Some nice long Princess Caroline lists in ep 2.

Prediction: Bojack is going to find the girl from the school party in ep 1 once he's properly sober because he's genuinely sorry about how he treated her.

I don't want to spoil anything, but false memories is def right. It feels like a cop out for BJ to attribute a lot of his addictions to how it's been portrayed. A five/six/seven/whatever year old doesn't grab for the vodka bottle to snuggle up with his mum right after. And yet. The show is commenting on and judging itself, it feels, and this makes it so strong.

I don't know for the life of me how BJ won't end up dead. But that's probably one of life's little mysteries. Life isn't always gracious; it's not a computer game, it doesn't kill you off when that would be the preferable thing. Lost souls escacpe through the cracks all the time. Question is, where do they end up?

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 25 October 2019 20:04 (four years ago) link

I didn't get where the showbiz reporter plot was going until... and it looks like Hollyhock will end up there too.

The makeup woman plot got resolved in an unexpected but logical way. The return of several recurring characters (who I won't mention for spoilery reasons) feels superfluous but I'm sure there's a reason for it.

Todd-centric ep most unToddly but great. Mister Peanutbutter MVP in the second half of the first half. I think the scene in the TV museum is going to be a turning point that'll play hard in the finale - especially the recurring line in it.

But the end scene... I don't think my heart will be able to take January.

SPOILERS

I didn't get the reporter plot either until it felt like 'why didn't I see this coming'. Feels like everything is being set up properly for one momentous, agonizing day of reckoning. I expect sadness more than catharsis tbh, or probably that unique Bojack mix of both.

Not sure where the female superhero movie subplot is going?

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 26 October 2019 19:58 (four years ago) link

I GUESS WE'RE WELL INTO SPOILER TERRITORY NOW

I'm struggling to see what catharsis will come from the day of reckoning, but I'm open minded. The optimist in me will spend the next 3 months hoping the final scene is about someone else and it's just a coincidence, but we know that's not going to happen.

I think the superhero movie is just to get Kelsey Jannings back into the main plot for the final episodes (although I have no idea why). The same goes for Character Actress Margo Martindale and Gina Cazador (whose story I thought was over).

Having trouble dealing but it occurred to me Diane = Laura, Princess Caroline = Ceirwen, THERE IS NO FUCKEN TODD IN MY LIFE HELP but Diane/Laura is what I cling to holy shit this show

NOT READING ANY POSTS but episode 4 (Surprise!) is a goddamn masterpiece :D

imago, Sunday, 27 October 2019 18:56 (four years ago) link

ok, up to date now. this series is about 3849032x better than S5. it's up there with 3 and 4

why does this show make me so emotional?

as much gravitas as a cartoon horse show may not entail, I still hope they stick the landing because there are some directions "guy on the upswing who finally has made his peace with the world only to have his worst moment become public" is going to be some awkward watching

mh, Thursday, 31 October 2019 14:34 (four years ago) link

so far this is the best season of the show imo

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 October 2019 14:59 (four years ago) link

it might well be

eps 4 and 7 the masterpieces so far, 7 made me cry a bit with the church ending

imago, Thursday, 31 October 2019 15:04 (four years ago) link

episode 4 was one of the funniest episodes they've ever done, but then again i'm a sucker for the slapstick-y episodes like that french farce one they did early in season 5

kanye kendrick frank kendrick frank kanye (voodoo chili), Thursday, 31 October 2019 15:12 (four years ago) link

this was pulled off much, much better

imago, Thursday, 31 October 2019 15:15 (four years ago) link

this one certainly had a bit more dramatic heft, and it tied into all the other surprise parties that mr peanutbutter hosted throughout the series.

kanye kendrick frank kendrick frank kanye (voodoo chili), Thursday, 31 October 2019 15:15 (four years ago) link

There wasn't a banner joke, but was that a joke that Mister Peanutbutter not being involved meant the banner went without a hitch?

omg that 'crossover episode' scene is up there among my favorites in the whole series. such a sad dog!

kanye kendrick frank kendrick frank kanye (voodoo chili), Thursday, 31 October 2019 15:50 (four years ago) link

bojack saying it's the crossover before mr. peanutbutter realizes it. and he plays along perfectly!

one month passes...

am watching about two episodes a day, up to s5e2. s4 was... hmm. some really hard hitting emotional stuff, with bojack continuing to plumb the depths of assholeishness, and the penultimate episode with his mother was incredible. but the whole thing was marred by the pb running for governor story, which was sub family guy foolishness.

anyway s5e2, am i being dim or is the timeline all loopy? she gets the divorce papers from mr pb, cries & runs away to vietnam, comes back and mr pb picks her up from the airport and gives her the divorce papers...

Paperbag raita (ledge), Sunday, 22 December 2019 20:54 (four years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Just finished S4 of my rewatch and agree with the emotional stuff (Ruthie is such a fucking gut punch) but quite enjoy the Mr PB storyline and it's OTT silliness

No, she loses it and gpes to Vietnam after seeing Mr PB & Pickles together at the housewarming party. So when she comes back, she already knows when he tells her he's seeing someone and is able to say "I'm really happy for you"

groovypanda, Thursday, 16 January 2020 08:31 (four years ago) link

Ok, the flashbacks made it pretty confusing.

Now how about this incredibly important detail: at the start and end of intro the outside of the house is shown standing on twelve unconnected pillars; when it's shown in an actual episode it has seven pillars with crossbeams. However in season 6 the start of the intro is changed to show the seven pillars, but it still has twelve at the end. What are they trying to tell us ::thinks emoji::

Frederik B, Thursday, 16 January 2020 09:29 (four years ago) link

The Netflix description which says "He's a curmudgeon with a heart of...not quite gold...but something like gold. Copper?" is so damn misleading, it took me a long time to come round to the show because I had it at the back of my mind while watching episode after episode of him being a complete arsehole.

Yes! The little effort they put into him here (and many of the minor characters) - loved it.

DIdn't really like the final scene but no idea what I would've preferred.

Do v v much like the Paige Sinclair spin-off formulating in my head tho.

Holy shit missed that Paige is voiced by Paget Brewster. Outstanding.

I've felt burdened for weeks now by the A+ niche background in-joke where, at the comedy club toward the end, there is the wall of comedians' pictures, and Kristen Schaal is on it, and of course ... Kristen Schaal is a horse

I've felt burdened not only because this is the kind of hilarious micro-reference that you really can't share via explanation with anyone else, but also because it's meant weeks spent with the original old "Kristen Schaal is a horse" chant stuck in my head 24/7

I would now like to pass this situation along to anyone else who recalls the whole "Kristen Schaal is a horse" bit from, like, two presidents ago

I like to imagine the entire complex animal-world of this show was invented solely to lead up to a scene in which Kristen Schaal is a horse (Sarah Lynn is an elaborate misdirect)
