tracing draft pick history is really time-consuming but worth noting myers has only made 5 second-round picks, one of which was draymond green. he's also made five picks at either spots 28 or 30 and found looney (the rest of those are busts or too soon to tell).

the fact that they didn't make a pick at all in 2013, 2014, and 2017 definitely informs their current lack of depth. a lot of those picks went into getting iguodala. i don't think there's enough info to say if myers is better or worse at drafting and finding late-round depth than a lot of other guys.

Why do you guys think Looney is good

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 19:50 (four years ago) link

They got Jordan Bell in '17 and Nemanja Nedović in '13 via draft-day trade. That's as good as a draft choice to me.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 25 October 2019 19:51 (four years ago) link

i don't think he's particularly good but he's not playing his way out of the league like damian jones.

call all destroyer, Friday, 25 October 2019 19:52 (four years ago) link

ah, thank you for filling that in xp. no hits on those picks though.

call all destroyer, Friday, 25 October 2019 19:52 (four years ago) link

Looney's best attribute is that he stays within his limits and doesn't try to do things he can't do adequately well. This may not make him 'good' as an individual player, but it makes him 'good' in a team setting, where his job is well-defined and he does it.

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 25 October 2019 19:54 (four years ago) link

He hit a three last night so y'all better watch out.

Fetchboy, Friday, 25 October 2019 19:56 (four years ago) link

Looney's constant air of slightly wonky, stoic zen focus is incredibly endearing

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 25 October 2019 19:58 (four years ago) link

I'd be surprised if that 3 was a play that was called for Looney. More like it developed from within Kerr's system and he was expected to take it under those circumstances, because another pass wouldn't have helped.

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 25 October 2019 20:00 (four years ago) link

Looney turning into a rotation player was really unexpected after sitting his rookie year with the hip thing and then looking lost and fat after he came back. he worked into shape and he was very valuable vs the rockets the last two times they met in the playoffs and in the finals. getting a rotation player around the 30th pick is good imo.

looney and the warriors been talking up his three ball all summer (this happens with every big every summer i know)

It was pretty easy man, you just cut and paste

Drafting true superstars outside the lottery picks is not impossible, but it is not a skill one can acquire. when it happens it's pure luck. Once you get outside of the 'unicorn' stratum of NBA players, the separation between starting rotation players and bench players gets a lot narrower and even the difference between training camp players and contract players is mighty slim. When you compare how well teams did using their below-20 picks over the past seven or eight years, then you're comparing very marginal differences. In my estimation, they are all nearly equally bad and good, except for a few picks more ascribable to luck than the skill of the drafting team.

With the Spurs, I'd say most of their success is in coaching, player development and predicting how a player's skills and temperament will merge with the whole team's concept of play. Many of their best moves have been to acquire players who've been in the league a while already, but poorly utilized by or poorly fit with their old team.

gsw have curry, klay, russell and dray on contract through to 2022 and still own their 2021 and 2022 first round picks. thats a pretty good situation for a superteam with 3 rings.

sure theyll suck this season but thats to be expected for a capped out team with its second best player injured

Watching the nuggets with an antenna. They still don’t have a local cable tv arrangement but bought time for the home opener on a local channel. Would like this to end in general.
