Also spotted in this epic shot are Nebulons, Brah’atoks, U-Wings, Lucrehulks, MC75s, Nebulon Bs, Sphyrna-Classes (aka the Hammerhead Cruiser from Knights of the Old Republic), what looks like a Baleen-class heavy freighter (the ship Han Solo and Chewie have in The Force Awakens), a Defender Class Corvette, maybe even a YT-2400 light freighter, Lancer-class pursuit craft, a MG-100 StarFortress SF-17, a Vakbeor-class cargo frigate, a Free Virgillia-class Bunkerbuster, and many, many more. All of which are real things on Wookieepedia if you want to check.

So hop to.

Are lucrehulks what the thinly disguised jewish stereotype aliens fly?

Different stereotype I thought but

Anyway, AMC theaters already have their digital lines going so you might want to consider that...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 21 October 2019 23:40 (four years ago) link

Alamo also on sale now. Basically, get on it.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 00:01 (four years ago) link

I'm pretty sure everyone will be able to find a cinema showing this once it opens, at a time that's convenient to them

Amazing!

(Why yes I have first showing tickets for the Thursday night.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 00:12 (four years ago) link

First (non-3D) showing at my theater was already sold out except for the very front row, had to get tickets for the next show.

got my ticket at the only real IMAX in town. only $7 thanks to Regal's unlimited plan.

I do like the hypergrandiose arrangement of the main theme, but Williams is fully bowing out with this one so why not.

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 22 October 2019 02:33 (four years ago) link

The multiple voiceover thing seems a little messy and it’s kind of cut like a clip show. Love those Star Wars, though

mh, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 02:51 (four years ago) link

Something really nice about that poster I noticed -- Carrie Fisher is the very first name listed.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 02:53 (four years ago) link

Well deserved!

mh, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 02:54 (four years ago) link

I wasn't keeping track of this, but I got a promotional email earlier today, when tickets went on sale at the El Capitan Theatre; hours later, I idly clicked the link, and chose a random acceptable day/time as a test; there was one pair of good seats left, so... ok. I'm ready to "enjoy a laser & light show before each screening, photo ops with First Order Stormtroopers™ and costume exhibits" on the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 21.

Seeing these tentpoles on opening night in an old double-decker theater, with a packed house, is rarely not worth it

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 04:21 (four years ago) link

Can I make a brief observation? (I'm sure there are a zillion other Star Wars threads, but this is the one on top.)

I'm far from a trve kvlt SW fan (though I have friends like that -- one guy had a podcast for a few years, collects the toy figures, etc.). Like most ppl my age, I grew up loving the movies; bought a secondhand "visual encyclopedia" or two in the prequel era; etc. I have no deep investment in defending the "honor" of the property, and I lack the depth of knowledge to get into nerd-level discourse. But a person I follow on Twitter occasionally retweets these dudes declaring that they've found a new "plot hole" in the Star Wars storyline or mythology... and then a bunch of their followers pile on with smug affirmations (like, "Love to wear my Jedi robe and use my real last name when I'm supposed to be hiding out from space Nazis," or whatever).

And I can never resist butting in with a explanation/rebuttal, because (a) it feels lame to be picking apart a narrative that (to my understanding) wasn't even really fleshed out beyond the first movie when that was made, let alone planned to take shape the way it is, after being cobbled together over the decades; but also (b) I realize that there actually *are* good responses to these "gotcha!" posts, which even I (in my casual fandom) am able to easily identify and point out. If anything, it's impressive how reasonably coherent the SW universe actually is, when you realize how these little nitpicks actually can be resolved if you step back and apply a little thought to the problem ("No-Prize" style), rather than rushing to publicly declare what a supreme boss you are for having outwitted the combined forces of George Lucas, Walt Disney, and Ron Howard. You know what I mean? That shit bugs me!

drunk on hot toddies (morrisp), Tuesday, 22 October 2019 04:39 (four years ago) link

All mythmakers run into the same problem set fwiw. Pointing out plot holes in your epic of choice often just illustrates how blind you are to the ur-narrative, or something. All heroes are pie filling; all worlds are pastry - the way you tell an American story is there’s no lid.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 04:58 (four years ago) link

This looks tired and overstuffed. And they're riding silly horse creatures (again). Nice color grading, though.

Apropos of Ned's comment above re: the music, if you're into SW music you can do worse than following this guy on Twitter:

That big iceberg in space looks good but Abrams still seems particularly reluctant to introduce new types of location into Star Wars (I don't think Death Star On Sea counts here and the stormy element makes it quite reminiscent of Kamino from Ep 2) so we're back to lots of scenes on Jakkooine and Forest Planet/Moon (lol is it Endor tho or what).

not his fault they've already done all the types of planets

Number None, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 17:34 (four years ago) link

I was thinking the same thing... not sure how many new environments they can really incorporate (or if that should even be a goal). Anyway, the jungle moon really is Endor, right?
