I developed it out of a Spotify playlist, so not much in the way of 'mixing', more of a dark new age / ambient thing with lots of Arabic and Middle Eastern inflections. I've been doing this thing where I record unplanned, one-take, hour-long mixes, each of which uses only records that come from a single shelf of my collection (one of those square IKEA shelves that fits like 70 singles). It's mostly a creative way of making myself listen to the records I already own, and to see how I mix. It's also a way of giving more purpose to DJing/collecting records, seeing as I have no opportunities to DJ out. Anyways, I recently made one I'm quite pleased with, from my shelf that spans labels that include but are not limited to mule, dial, smallville, and giegling. This one has tracks from Henrik Schwarz, Kettenkarrusel, Brendon Moeller, STL, Roman Flügel, Frantzvaag, Jurgen Junker, Christopher Rau, Kuniyuki, and Traumprinz. It feels from this music--maybe not actually true in the scenes, I can't speak to that--like all the "fusion" vs. "trad" vibes from the late 70s/80s in Jazz have dissipated in this younger generation. Like, they just take it all--all the best stuff from wherever, including outside of Jazz, and bring it all together. Music for your head AND your heart, your body AND your soul, no more "or".

Also, this music feels collective-oriented--nobody stepping to the front for their bars while the others vamp along. Even when somebody is "soloing," the sum total of all the music retains primacy--very little "showing off" in other words. I love that.
