I beat Obra Dinn! It’s good.

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Monday, 21 October 2019 00:46 (four years ago) link

nice

ciderpress, Monday, 21 October 2019 00:52 (four years ago) link

i've been playing it too. it's definitely cool but it's kind of repetitive and i feel like it keeps rushing me along and not giving me space to figure things out.

na (NA), Monday, 21 October 2019 14:27 (four years ago) link

you can't really figure out too many until you've seen all the scenes. once it starts raining on the boat that's the cue that you've seen everything and it's time to review and solve

ciderpress, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:33 (four years ago) link

“Repetitive” is not a valid complaint about a video game

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Monday, 21 October 2019 14:38 (four years ago) link

if i were to buy Obra Dinn is there any reason to buy PC vs Switch or is it good on both?

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Monday, 21 October 2019 16:13 (four years ago) link

No technical complaints about the Switch version either TV or handheld. I had to crank the look speed way down to not get nauseous but I was grateful to have the option.

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Monday, 21 October 2019 16:16 (four years ago) link

the game is first person view so if you prefer to look with a mouse and not the right stick then it'd be better on PC. i know i prefer that

ciderpress, Monday, 21 October 2019 16:28 (four years ago) link

there's no action though so it's not like an fps where that's actually a gameplay difference

ciderpress, Monday, 21 October 2019 16:29 (four years ago) link

Speaking of which, I bought Doom way back when on Switch, and while I'm not sure how far along I am and it's been months since I played it, I think it's pretty far. From the start, gyro was absolutely essential to my gameplay on regular (which is still pretty tough) difficulty. Still, it was on deep discount on PS4, so I picked it up, curious, knowing the presentation and gameplay would be significantly better, and they are, but because I've gone from Gyro to twin-sticks I had to dial down the difficulty to "what a wimp" or whatever, and it's still pretty tricky to aim (even with aim assist, whatever subtle thing that feature actually does). I'm sure my thumbs will get used to it eventually.

I'm weeks late to this conversation but I've been replaying LttP on my SNES emulator and it's just the greatest IMO

still haven't gotten a Switch but I really want Mario Maker 2

Very glad Obra Dinn let’s you know whether you have enough info to solve something. Can’t imagine the rabbit holes you’d senselessly dive into.

That said have been digging deep and working hard on some of these mysteries somewhat unnecessarily because I wasn’t aware there were fresh bodies/clues to uncover.

I get how this could feel repetitive if you blast through it, felt fatigue from doing just that early on, but stretching it out now and it’s a real treat.

Ring Fit Adventure: it’s fun, I’m sweaty

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Wednesday, 30 October 2019 03:00 (four years ago) link

Great, now I have to get it

It is my great honor to post on this messageboard! (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 30 October 2019 03:53 (four years ago) link

it is fun! it is taxing! we need to start a thread.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 30 October 2019 04:45 (four years ago) link

How much floor space do you need for it? I have... a single spot to stand on and not much else.

Nhex, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 05:54 (four years ago) link

playing obra dinn

think it needs a lot of attention!

nxd, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 10:08 (four years ago) link

I really love Ring Fit Adventure. You'd probably be fine with an 8x8 space. A half-hour session at middling difficulty wipes me out.

you can't invert the Y-axis in luigi's mansion 3 ?!!!!!!!!!!

be goose, do crimes (||||||||), Thursday, 31 October 2019 23:50 (four years ago) link

fuck that shit, inverted 4 lyfe

I admit, I at least appreciate the sense of humor of the "Bloodstained" developers:

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 November 2019 12:02 (four years ago) link

luigi is pretty good! the first hour or so is clunky and fairly slow, but when it steps into gear it becomes quite involving

times 牛肉麵 (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 2 November 2019 05:32 (four years ago) link

and lack of inverted y axis is fiddly but not a dealbreaker

times 牛肉麵 (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 2 November 2019 05:32 (four years ago) link

i can't think of many 3rd person games that have inverted axis options. did mario sunshine?

ciderpress, Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:27 (four years ago) link

you mean on nintendo systems?

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:28 (four years ago) link

3rd person non shooter i should say, i know fortnite et al do

ciderpress, Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:29 (four years ago) link

right I mean generally 3rd person AAA open world games have it (eg Just Cause) but those are shooters. the uncharteds have inverted but those are maybe just shooters too

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:33 (four years ago) link

well DQXI has inverted too, that's not a shooter

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:33 (four years ago) link

I am inverted 4 lyfe obv, being a non n00b

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:34 (four years ago) link

when did inverted look stop being the default?

classic thread

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:34 (four years ago) link

Steamworld Dig is 3 bucks on the Nintendo Store right now - I’ve never played it but it’s a fun Metroidy game, is that correct?

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Saturday, 2 November 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

steamworld dig 2 is really good. 1 is lesser but still fine

ciderpress, Saturday, 2 November 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

but yes to it being metroidy. i think 1 has some randomly generated maps whereas 2 is fully designed

ciderpress, Saturday, 2 November 2019 20:26 (four years ago) link

i can't think of many 3rd person games that have inverted axis options. did mario sunshine?

back then a lot of games didn’t, but it feels super obvious to include the option now

times 牛肉麵 (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 2 November 2019 20:35 (four years ago) link

the super dumb boss levels in luigi, made harder by the incredibly shit controls, are so unnecessarily frustrating that i am on the fence about abandoning this altogether. it’s not fun.

times 牛肉麵 (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 3 November 2019 11:50 (four years ago) link

I read a kotaku article about the terrible default controls / button placement. It strongly suggested using the shoulder buttons for be flashlight (and other abilities) to free up the right thumb for turning Luigi using the analog stick. I hadn’t played the game, but it might help.

God, I’ve turned into what I once hated as a kid - Winnie Cooper giving the tip about how to find a secret warp whistle in SMB3 in the Wizard, during a tournament for a game that supposedly no one had ever played (in the context of the movie)

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 November 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link

cheers karl! so many functions being under the right hand is a nightmare so i‘ll definitely try that.

without spoiling too much, there’s a moment with frying pans which makes you aim precisely at something generic which you can’t see due to shit camera placement, with counterintuitive aiming controls (and no option to invert axes); and the retaliation attacks are faster than luigi can move, which basically means the only way to get through it is to keep hacking away until you get lucky. it doesn’t feel like skill at all.

there’s another boss which obviously requires some specific technique, but i mashed the a button for five minutes and it died.

times 牛肉麵 (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 3 November 2019 20:09 (four years ago) link

Saw a review that said something like how even for all its challenges it's easy to imagine making it through the whole game without dying once.

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Friday, 8 November 2019 16:35 (four years ago) link

this looks to be of the genre "games that lead to irl arguments with your spouse"
