she certainly invited her fans to pile on

if she invited her fans to pile on they did a shitty job of that, that's not why I feel awful, I feel awful about its existence, that I could have prevented, had I done something differently

(by "a shitty job" I mean they didn't; I only found out about it late in the afternoon)

just a typo, right?

Evan, Friday, 18 October 2019 20:05 (four years ago) link

These things happen, k, especially to overworked writers

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 18 October 2019 20:09 (four years ago) link

more of a mix-up, I assume, to be clear where I am at fault is not in introducing the error but failing to see it before it was too late

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Friday, 18 October 2019 20:14 (four years ago) link

You’re not at fault at all, I understand how you feel with it being under your byline, but I see the editor took responsibility / apologized, seems like it’s all good

actually, I take that back, I don't think the artist tweeted about it at all (or else deleted it), people had just atted them in

wait, no, she did

it is irksome to be misnamed in print, but on the other hand it's a small understandable mistake of the sort that happens all the time and it was fixed immediately, so only an egomaniacal monster would care more than a minute. there aren't any egomaniacal monsters out there on music industry twitter are there??!?

K-Rock flipped formats in 2005. Not a coincidence.

Was struck by the contrast btw this observation in today’s Go-Gos review:

As the Los Angeles punk scene emerged in the late 1970s, it was inclusive, diverse, and pioneered by marginalized voices.

...and the conclusion of the recent review of X’s Los Angeles:

The song is a reminder, in a culture that rhapsodizes the early days of punk, exactly how limited its considerations of the most marginalized people were, how narrow its stage once was and how vast it is becoming.

flopson, Sunday, 20 October 2019 15:36 (four years ago) link

I'm glad Pitchfork is doing the work to correct the mistakes they made ... in February.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 20 October 2019 16:12 (four years ago) link

Just gonna go ahead and guess that this clipping review will be a source of anger in RYM circles

Simon H., Monday, 21 October 2019 05:20 (four years ago) link

Well then in this case I’ve got common cause with them
Not to throw my hat into the ring with every /mu/ pseud who rewards the stuff they like with an “intelligent” modifier but “this music sounds like too much thought went into it” is a criticism that’s basically never going to find traction with me, and you can throw an extra layer of suspicion on top of that whenever the next rhetorical move is to say that the resultant work feels “sterile”, esp. in genres like rap where “non-sterile” tends to = “my imagined ex nihilo version of this style which required no craft to produce beyond the transcription of Real Experience And Emotion”, which is exactly what that last paragraph seems to be doing

what else are you all “over” (Champiness), Monday, 21 October 2019 06:30 (four years ago) link

Also I’m all for “cosplay” becoming common parlance in music criticism for fully and meticulously adopting an established style that one did not previously inhabit but *Matrix voice* “not like this”

what else are you all “over” (Champiness), Monday, 21 October 2019 06:38 (four years ago) link

It's like...these motherfuckers think they run the authenticity game, and wow betide anyone who doesn't stay in their lane. We had this with Dälek before - this guy making some of the most brilliant and interesting hip-hop, and sure they liked his stuff for a moment back then, but they've dropped him like a stone, subtext being: this moment is too *important* for your shenanigans, small-timer

imago, Monday, 21 October 2019 08:20 (four years ago) link

'wow betide'...lol

imago, Monday, 21 October 2019 08:21 (four years ago) link

At this point RYM >>>>>>>>> Pitchfork anyway.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 October 2019 08:26 (four years ago) link

Then again, rewarding aesthetically normative acts with an almost imperceptible twist has been Pitchfork's m. o. since, well, forever.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 October 2019 08:28 (four years ago) link

I agree that the record is good tbc

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 21 October 2019 12:39 (four years ago) link

In terms of eclecticism and sheer scope and as a tool for discovering new music, yes. Certainly not in terms of writing, if that’s what’s rankling you.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 October 2019 12:43 (four years ago) link

1) i don’t really think they’re comparable bc one’s a publication and the other is a message board contorted around a database of records 2) rym users are just as corny and inflexible and arbitrary in their judgments of records they just trend more “avant”/“prog” but only a really specific strain of it so they’re caught in their own feedback loop 3) rym overall 1000 percent more concerned about the opinions of anthony fantano than music

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 21 October 2019 12:45 (four years ago) link

pitchfork tbf more concerned with curating their position as #1 trendhopper and purveyor of trusted musical opinion than music

but rym does have its problems yes, which i am working to eradicate

imago, Monday, 21 October 2019 12:49 (four years ago) link

Beyond the obvious noise I can easily navigate my way around RYM in such a way as to stumble across intriguing bands that I likely wouldn’t have discovered otherwise, whereas Pitchfork’s selections are only rarely in line with my own musical interests these days. I’m comparing them with regard to their ability to draw attention to music I might care about, otherwise I agree that it’s apples and oranges.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 October 2019 12:50 (four years ago) link

I visit RYM fairly often, but the only place I encounter the name Anthony Fantano is on ILM.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 21 October 2019 12:51 (four years ago) link

Pitchfork and ILM have a real Poncho and Lefty relationship

Speaking as a former magazine editor, yes. All readers' polls are market research.

2019 Pitchfork just constantly dunking on the RYM/Fantano/mu/imago axis of angry boy music (Clipping, Tool, Tropical Fuck Storm, docking Run the Jewels/Swans/Kozelek) might be a fantastic act of passive-aggression

imago, Monday, 21 October 2019 15:51 (four years ago) link

The clipping. review tracks with my impression of it. I don't like the timbre of Diggs' voice, and "the charisma of a metronome and the expressive range of a sock puppet" captures his style pretty well.
