one thing that kills drawings like this is total adherence to a particular photographic source- it doesn't matter how much nuance you put into the shading if you don't understand the mechanics and dynamics of the thing you're trying to depict

That thing Jimmy Olsen is playing looks more like a saz than a guitar.

Actually it is a baritome saz.

Don't get me started on drums, cymbals, and tom angles.

Here is a pretty good drawing, as a palate cleanser:

it's obviously tough going to get the face of the guitar to read as a flat surface on an elipse with so many compound curves around the edges

Wow, both of the instruments on the Spider-Gwen cover that morrisp posted are pretty good! OFF TOPIC. MODS PLEASE PERMABAN.

Ok but take further discussion to "Reasonably accurate drawings of guitars."

OK, back on track... this is one of my favorite drawings, by my favorite artist -- but I'm not afraid to admit that the angle of the neck is all f'd up:

Spider-Gwen looks like she's about to drop her pick. Good drawing otherwise tho

The Beatles cartoon wasn't exactly a model of accuracy, but it's funny they went to the trouble of drawing Paul with his left-handed Höfner bass but couldn't be bothered checking how many strings a bass has.

... it has four strings

budo jeru, Friday, 17 April 2020 23:37 (four years ago) link

Oh no, hang on. This is the one I meant to post, with Paul's 6 string bass.

would totally kick it with a six-string Hofner bass though

Fleetwood Machiavelli (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 18 April 2020 01:30 (four years ago) link

Probably off-topic for this thread but providing a (completely implausible) snare stand is small comfort given that a kick drum with no spurs is liable to roll off the stage...

"Incredibly shit drawings of drumkits" thread would dwarf this one, if it were something that anyone but me cared about.

I mean, many non-guitarists have at least looked at guitars and kinda tried to represent what they look like. Many non-guitarists have held guitars. Some even own and display them as collectibles or art objects!

In contrast, only drum nerds have elaborate opinions about tom mounting systems, double-braced vs. single-braced cymbal stands, tilters, booms, single vs. double lugs.

Incidentally the zigzag pattern of the lines on the second Ringo pic indicate a system of rope drumhead tensioning that was becoming obsolete in the 19th century. Meanwhile the first pic is a little ahead of its time; those lugs have an 80s Pearl Export vibe!

> rope drumhead tensioning that was becoming obsolete in the 19th century

This is fascinating, because the visual trope is a constant in illustrations of toy soldiers, the little drummer boy, etc. It seems to carry over into images of trap sets, even though there was no overlap.

Julius Caesar Memento Hoodie (bendy), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 17:39 (three years ago) link

Exactly. I am sure there are rope-tension aficionados, just as there are animal skin-head aficionados. But Ringo was neither of those.

So many good details! Appropriate number of strings, p90 pickups, a bigsby tailpiece.

Then you got the instrument cable coming out of the lower horn.
