Yes, it's been well reviewed for its gameplay and story, though it's also pretty taxing on consoles.

has that been fixed with patches for the ps4? i'd love to try it but i'm still a bit wary.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 19:44 (four years ago) link
That's what I've read, yes, and partly why I pulled the trigger so soon after release!
― HELLA FITZGERALD (Leee), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:07 (four years ago) link
underneath the wackadoo sub-nolanisms there’s a pretty pedestrian game imo. the creeping dread it induces is so effective and well realised though it’s almost worth it.
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:09 (four years ago) link
besides the setting and vibe, which are top notch imo, i liked the gameplay a lot. it's not particularly innovative but it's fun, and there's a sequence toward the end that immediately entered Adam's Good Level Hall of Fame alongside such luminaries as doom E1M2, sniper level in COD4, etc.
― adam, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:16 (four years ago) link
wackadoo sub-nolanisms sounds right up my alley don't @ me.
― HELLA FITZGERALD (Leee), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link
sounds interesting enough and i haven't bought myself a new game in a while (well, i did get dicey dungeons but that was $15) so i'm pulling the trigger
― Mordy, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:25 (four years ago) link
I've been pretty excited about Control, since it was so well received, but I've slotted it in with Resident Evil 2 and Plague Tale under "waiting for an even bigger price drop." The great thing about PS4 (tying this all together) is that since you know the price *will* drop significantly over a year or so, you can comfortably put off buying it until later and focus on the games you already have while you wait. Big Switch games, that shit never goes on sale, so (imo) it's pretty easy to just shrug off new releases entirely unless they seem really, really special. Or, for that matter, punt indefinitely, since it's not like you'll be missing out on some special deal. For example, I'm excited about Luigi's Mansion 3, which looks gorgeous, but I'm in no hurry to shell out for it when I can (and did) recently get four AAA PS4 games for around half the price of a single Nintendo game. So it goes.

hi everyone. so I'm an official member of this thread now.bought mine with Witcher, Dead Souls, Red Dead II and Crash Bandicoot Racing (for when I have people over)
One quick noob question: Can I charge two controllers at a time using the twin USB ports? Doesn't seem like I can

What happened to waiting for BF??
― HELLA FITZGERALD (Leee), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 23:07 (four years ago) link
shoulda waited for the ps6 tbh

Thanks again for the heads-up on the Control deal, Leee! I've been playing it this weekend and it's fun.
There are some lower framerate moments on my non-Pro PS4, but it's reasonable. Tracer's right that it's relatively light in the action dynamics/plot but I feel like that's a bonus. Just enough weirdness/variation to make it fun, and enough dialogue to move things along.
Enough to tide me over until Death Stranding, which inevitably will have hours of exposition and grimacing

not surprised by slowdowns because it’s completely insane how much stuff is flying through the air in some scenes!

Anyone play "The Forest?" It's on sale for $13 right now, and I'm kind of a sucker for clever enemy AI, which this game appears to exemplify.

I'd been advised to wait months for the new Switch to be released before changing my mind for the PS4. Plus the finance offer in the shop was good.
Wouldn't mind some recommendations of two-player or multi-player games that I can download and play with my S/O and housemate. Crash Bandicoot racing is great fun (surprisingly tough too)
― frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 21 October 2019 13:20 (four years ago) link
Witcher is fantastic so far but quite overwhelmingto me as a novice player - all this gwent and alchemy and having to get your sword fixed etc... I feel like I should have some sort of printed manual with guides on how to do things. My TV isn't massive and it's kind of fiddly and hard to make out all the little inventory icons etc..
― frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 21 October 2019 13:24 (four years ago) link
I do wish a lot of these games came with manuals again. My biggest problem is diving into a game but then for lots of reasons needing to take a break, and when I return I've forgotten all my skills or even what all the buttons do.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 October 2019 13:30 (four years ago) link
there are massive strategy guides that scratch that itch but they're like thirty bucks
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 21 October 2019 13:37 (four years ago) link
Witcher is very good at explaining in baby-language how to do stuff and what you're meant to do next, but there's a LOT and as I'm not very well versed in the vernacular of new third-person gaming, it's still a lot of info for me to understand

lolAt first I thought cider was going to say that tackling a complex game like Witcher might be a decent trial-by-fire method to get used to nu-games
― It is my great honor to post on this messageboard! (Karl Malone), Monday, 21 October 2019 14:02 (four years ago) link
i was gonna say something about how it's a game where the gameplay is secondary to the writing and world building and so you can kinda just make your way through with basic tactics and occasional weapon/armor upgrades if you don't feel like learning the alchemy systems
― ciderpress, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:08 (four years ago) link
you can get through most tough encounters just by abusing the shield rune plus hit and run tactics iirc
― ciderpress, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:10 (four years ago) link
that's good to know. I'm trying to help an old lady find a frying pan right now. V silly.

I was told Dark Souls is for pros only. Perhaps Red Dead would have been a better indoctrination, but oh well I'm on this one for now.
Are there any good PS4 games that are similar to Earthbound/Chrono Trigger, in that they've got a lot of offbeat humour going on, as well as a cool story and puzzles?
― frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 21 October 2019 14:13 (four years ago) link
Witcher 3 made me sigh after an hour and try something else. Maybe I'll go back, but it was a lot to grasp and tbh to work that hard to understand something I'd like to be paid.
― L'assie (Euler), Monday, 21 October 2019 14:13 (four years ago) link
xp you could try Dragon Quest XI if you want a traditional turn based rpg like those
― ciderpress, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:15 (four years ago) link
Dark Souls was hard but wasn't that bad, imo. You'll likely need help, like I did, but there's enough going on that I can (in theory) imagine going back to it at some point and trying it a different way.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:35 (four years ago) link
xp - not fussed if it's turn-based or not (not 100% sure what that means, but I can guess it's down to the battle style), more the weirdness and humour of those kinds of games that I like. A lot of PS4 RPG-ish games look very serious and masculine - big dudes with swords or guns killing aliens or dragons or soldiers, which is cool and everything but it's quite po-faced a lot of the time and doesn't break the fourth wall too much
― frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 21 October 2019 14:45 (four years ago) link
turn-based meaning you choose commands from a menu rather than controlling the character directly. like the games you mentioned
― ciderpress, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:51 (four years ago) link
oh yeah. i guess i find all that stuff to be the most tedious parts of those games. i love everything else
― frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 21 October 2019 14:52 (four years ago) link
but yeah dragon quest xi is probably the best answer to your question, it very much maintains the style of those 90s JRPGs
― ciderpress, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:56 (four years ago) link
i'll think on whether there's an action RPG alternative, blanking on one right now
― ciderpress, Monday, 21 October 2019 15:01 (four years ago) link
I take back my prior comments on Control running great on the original PS4
It's not every scene that kills it, but by mid-game my console is trying its best to keep up. Might work better on the installed version when not reading from disc? In any case, yikes. Still very fun, though.
― mh, Monday, 21 October 2019 15:10 (four years ago) link
and this is after the patch?
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 October 2019 15:26 (four years ago) link
presumably
I need to sort out what's going on with my PS4, because it's refusing to apply the 7.00 system update because the download is corrupted regardless of how I download it. It appears to have patched Control, though. I'll double check.
honestly couldn't be bothered to fix anything because it was the end of my vacation and I just wanted to play games and not give a shit about anything else
― mh, Monday, 21 October 2019 15:39 (four years ago) link
Turn-based RPG recommendation: Persona 5, but this time I'd definitely advise waiting because the expansion is coming sometime next year.
Action RPG a la Witcher 3 (which I still think is terrifically overrated and unfun but hey dog latin if you're digging it who am I to rain on yer parade?): Horizon Zero Dawn (stars inquisitive female character).

i still haven't played the new DQ but that seems like a perfect recommendation for dog latin, as far as kind of old school ideas on a new platform. persona 5, too! more of an updated take but perfectly graspable and v stylish

Noob question: Can I save games to my PS4 so I don't need to swap discs whne I want to play a new game? Is it recommended on a 500GB?
― frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 21 October 2019 16:16 (four years ago) link
yes you can! in fact, i'm not even sure how you save to anywhere except the ps4 (there's probably a USB stick option but i've never messed with it)
also, not sure if you know, but you don't need to buy discs (unless you want to) - you can buy games directly from the store and download them. installing games to the hard drive also makes them run faster (?? i'm assuming this is true)
― It is my great honor to post on this messageboard! (Karl Malone), Monday, 21 October 2019 16:20 (four years ago) link
buy games directly from the ^online ps4^ store and download them, if that wasn't clear
