you can probably get like a 40% lower price around black friday, that part is true
PS5 is still a year off and will be significantly pricier than the PS4 at launch and it'll probably be 2022 before the PS4 gets fully phased out for new games, so that one's your call
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 19:50 (four years ago) link
There's no real point getting a PS5 until a year after release (at least) but waiting 5 weeks to Black Friday is probably a good idea as there'll be lots of good bundle deals around
― groovypanda, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 19:51 (four years ago) link
Unless you're not gonna play it at all in the next two years, this is the best time (end of generation) to buy a console.
That said I might just give in and get PS5 at launch. I pussyfooted on the Switch and eventually got it, but there was no point in waiting in retrospect. PS5 will probably get better deals the holiday season after year one though, especially if X-whatever launches as well.

Waiting on price drops for Nintendo is, uniquely, a sucker's game, isn't it? Still makes sense to wait on MS/Sony since they follow saner (less insane?) pricing.
― HELLA FITZGERALD (Leee), Tuesday, 15 October 2019 22:15 (four years ago) link
higher entry point, but on the other hand if you buy physical you can sell it a month later for roughly the same price unlike yr typical AAA games which quickly drop in price these days
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 15 October 2019 22:35 (four years ago) link
MS/Sony are by and large competition for each other, not Nintendo, is what's going on there.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 23:01 (four years ago) link
Nintendo has basically settled for being the secondary/tertiary home system, though, which makes it weirder that their prices rarely go down. But yeah, true - PS5 prices will surely go down faster. And who knows, maybe they'll pump out a hardware revision within a year.
― Nhex, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 23:07 (four years ago) link
Then again, maybe I'm wrong and the Switch has a higher base than PS4? I dunno
I mean, they haven't outsold the PS4, but the PS4 has a head start:
Here is an update to the cumulative global console shipment chart. The chart is launch aligned. Key points:- PS4 surpasses 100m, faster than PS2 and Wii- Switch reaches 36.87m, tracking inline with PS4 pic.twitter.com/o28T7l9f9j— Daniel Ahmad (@ZhugeEX) July 30, 2019
Or does secondary/tertiary refer to some headology about systems within the same home?
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 23:14 (four years ago) link
Switch only has a higher base than PS4 in japan, everywhere else there's about half as many (but it's been out for half as long)
nintendo's game prices don't go down because no one else competes with them meaningfully in the style of games they make
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 23:16 (four years ago) link
I've heard that Nintendo's price inflexibility also has to do with the fact that they're still using cartridges, where the costs are still higher compared to optical discs. Dunno how much water that holds though!
― HELLA FITZGERALD (Leee), Tuesday, 15 October 2019 23:20 (four years ago) link
it's true that carts cost more to produce but i don't think it's the reason given that their last 3 consoles used discs and they weren't any more flexible with their pricing for those
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 23:26 (four years ago) link
i guess last 2 since gamecube wasn't standard discs
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 23:27 (four years ago) link
What I don't get is the third-party stuff ported over to Switch at a huge premium. Doom, for example, is currently $60 on Switch. It's currently $9.99 on PS4.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 02:16 (four years ago) link
paying for the portability
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 02:20 (four years ago) link
For sure, to some extent. But why does it have to be at the Switch premium price default of $60? They could sell it for $50 or $40 or $30 or lower, and it'd still be several times the PS4 price.
Anyway, I do have it on Switch, but I just bought it and Alien for PS4, because cheap.

Control under $40 with the coupon! Just picked it up because I doubt it's going to get much cheaper on Black Friday.

i've never even heard of this game but it looks interesting - are the reviews good??
― Mordy, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 19:24 (four years ago) link
Yes, it's been well reviewed for its gameplay and story, though it's also pretty taxing on consoles.
― HELLA FITZGERALD (Leee), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 19:31 (four years ago) link
has that been fixed with patches for the ps4? i'd love to try it but i'm still a bit wary.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 19:44 (four years ago) link
That's what I've read, yes, and partly why I pulled the trigger so soon after release!
― HELLA FITZGERALD (Leee), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:07 (four years ago) link
underneath the wackadoo sub-nolanisms there’s a pretty pedestrian game imo. the creeping dread it induces is so effective and well realised though it’s almost worth it.
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:09 (four years ago) link
besides the setting and vibe, which are top notch imo, i liked the gameplay a lot. it's not particularly innovative but it's fun, and there's a sequence toward the end that immediately entered Adam's Good Level Hall of Fame alongside such luminaries as doom E1M2, sniper level in COD4, etc.
― adam, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:16 (four years ago) link
wackadoo sub-nolanisms sounds right up my alley don't @ me.
― HELLA FITZGERALD (Leee), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link
sounds interesting enough and i haven't bought myself a new game in a while (well, i did get dicey dungeons but that was $15) so i'm pulling the trigger
― Mordy, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:25 (four years ago) link
I've been pretty excited about Control, since it was so well received, but I've slotted it in with Resident Evil 2 and Plague Tale under "waiting for an even bigger price drop." The great thing about PS4 (tying this all together) is that since you know the price *will* drop significantly over a year or so, you can comfortably put off buying it until later and focus on the games you already have while you wait. Big Switch games, that shit never goes on sale, so (imo) it's pretty easy to just shrug off new releases entirely unless they seem really, really special. Or, for that matter, punt indefinitely, since it's not like you'll be missing out on some special deal. For example, I'm excited about Luigi's Mansion 3, which looks gorgeous, but I'm in no hurry to shell out for it when I can (and did) recently get four AAA PS4 games for around half the price of a single Nintendo game. So it goes.

hi everyone. so I'm an official member of this thread now.bought mine with Witcher, Dead Souls, Red Dead II and Crash Bandicoot Racing (for when I have people over)
One quick noob question: Can I charge two controllers at a time using the twin USB ports? Doesn't seem like I can

― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 20 October 2019 16:56 (four years ago) link
Thanks again for the heads-up on the Control deal, Leee! I've been playing it this weekend and it's fun.
There are some lower framerate moments on my non-Pro PS4, but it's reasonable. Tracer's right that it's relatively light in the action dynamics/plot but I feel like that's a bonus. Just enough weirdness/variation to make it fun, and enough dialogue to move things along.
Enough to tide me over until Death Stranding, which inevitably will have hours of exposition and grimacing

not surprised by slowdowns because it’s completely insane how much stuff is flying through the air in some scenes!

Anyone play "The Forest?" It's on sale for $13 right now, and I'm kind of a sucker for clever enemy AI, which this game appears to exemplify.

I'd been advised to wait months for the new Switch to be released before changing my mind for the PS4. Plus the finance offer in the shop was good.
Wouldn't mind some recommendations of two-player or multi-player games that I can download and play with my S/O and housemate. Crash Bandicoot racing is great fun (surprisingly tough too)

Witcher is fantastic so far but quite overwhelmingto me as a novice player - all this gwent and alchemy and having to get your sword fixed etc... I feel like I should have some sort of printed manual with guides on how to do things. My TV isn't massive and it's kind of fiddly and hard to make out all the little inventory icons etc..
― frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 21 October 2019 13:24 (four years ago) link
I do wish a lot of these games came with manuals again. My biggest problem is diving into a game but then for lots of reasons needing to take a break, and when I return I've forgotten all my skills or even what all the buttons do.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 October 2019 13:30 (four years ago) link
there are massive strategy guides that scratch that itch but they're like thirty bucks
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 21 October 2019 13:37 (four years ago) link
Witcher is very good at explaining in baby-language how to do stuff and what you're meant to do next, but there's a LOT and as I'm not very well versed in the vernacular of new third-person gaming, it's still a lot of info for me to understand

― It is my great honor to post on this messageboard! (Karl Malone), Monday, 21 October 2019 14:02 (four years ago) link
i was gonna say something about how it's a game where the gameplay is secondary to the writing and world building and so you can kinda just make your way through with basic tactics and occasional weapon/armor upgrades if you don't feel like learning the alchemy systems
― ciderpress, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:08 (four years ago) link
you can get through most tough encounters just by abusing the shield rune plus hit and run tactics iirc
