I find it odd that they add the floating brand name to all their kid-friendly movies. It used to be Walt Disney's or Walt Disney (Pictures) Presents, now it's just Disney. can't wait for Disney Disney's The Kid.

"How dare Coppola say mean things about Marvel movies when he made [random bad movie]" is a weak sneer. Every filmmaker with a real body of work makes some bad movies. Stop whining, nobody's gonna take your precious two-and-a-half-star superhero films away.

The problem with Coppola's career go a bit beyond 'made some bad movies', though. Some of the blame for why directors have less freedom these days has to go to the seventies directors and how they handled the trust they were given.

Frederik B, Monday, 21 October 2019 09:19 (four years ago) link

I'm fine with Scorsese being discussed here, as soon as he makes a film set this millennium.

wasdnuos (abanana), Monday, 21 October 2019 09:34 (four years ago) link

A compromise is possible

figured it out.... marvel fans can call their movies “cimena”
• it’s not “cinema” so martin will be happy
• still pretty close to “cinema”
• you sound like a widdle baby when you say it, which you are

It’s just very funny how insecure nerds are in their complete cultural supremacy. Like calm down, Disney will be fine, they will keep shitting these things out forever whether or not acclaimed directors say they’re good when asked by interviewers. Unfortunately.

YouGov to see it (wins), Monday, 21 October 2019 10:04 (four years ago) link

these same directors loved the B-movie dross of their own childhood (as do I!), it definitely stinks of "old man yelling at cloud" shenanigans

Nhex, Monday, 21 October 2019 12:55 (four years ago) link

There is much to love in ye olde B Movie dross that doesn't apply to the machine-tooled fan servicey precision of your modern comicbook movies

Dr Morbius will today be played by Mel Brooks.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 21 October 2019 13:08 (four years ago) link

The Superhero movies aren't B-movies by any definition of the term. Also, I hate everyone on every side of this debate. The mega-directors of Hollywood who despair because two old idiots don't like what they do, and the two old idiots who wants to define what is cinema and what is not.

Frederik B, Monday, 21 October 2019 13:11 (four years ago) link

i'm not sure if giving your opinion when your asked a question about something is the same as wanting to gatekeep cinema

Xia Nu del Vague (Noodle Vague), Monday, 21 October 2019 13:15 (four years ago) link

The real villains here are the idiot interviewers who keep thinking the most interesting thing you can ask a grandee of American cinema is “no for real though what about avenger 4”

When the opinion is 'that is not cinema!' then I don't see the confusion?

Frederik B, Monday, 21 October 2019 13:28 (four years ago) link

The implication of that is "to me", I'm pretty sure he's not going to tell aficionados of the genre that they can't use the word

Frederik B, Monday, 21 October 2019 13:41 (four years ago) link

Frederik B, Monday, 21 October 2019 13:49 (four years ago) link

and the two old idiots who wants to define what is cinema and what is not

Scorsese is not trying to police anyone's taste. As for being an idiot...

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 October 2019 14:15 (four years ago) link

the whole kerfluffle reminds me of when I referred to the first Iron Man movie, shortly after release, as "kind of shitty" cultural entertainment to an ex's friend and I had to backtrack when it was clear I hurt his feelings

but really, it's fine to enjoy all kinds of movies and books, whatever, and not everything needs to make you question your norms or inspire more deliberate thought. I tried to explain that I'd probably be watching all the comic book movies myself, but as far as media consumption goes, it's not going to shake up your outlook on life or leave you pondering the message of the plot.

the inability of people to understand a couple of guys can share a negative take on their overproduced fairy tale movie adventures and it doesn't mean it's to be evaluated as an objective truth is something that's lost on people and it's frankly mystifying

mh, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:31 (four years ago) link

we should section off theaters in the way we do bookstores: everything gets labeled as "cinema" (literature) or "genre fiction" and then people can argue forever about how there is/isn't a distinction

mh, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:34 (four years ago) link

That's such a bad idea

Frederik B, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:54 (four years ago) link

thank you! that was the aim

mh, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:56 (four years ago) link

The point Scorsese emphasized in his followup remarks is that the production of other kinds of films is ending bcz of the comic-book epics. Per this thread i posted elsewhere, that is a stone fact.

Thread: If you think "Every Movie In Theaters Is A Marvel Movie" is false let me tell you a little story. I chose BODIED to get a small theatrical run of about 15 theaters. These types of deals are pretty much ineffective and just filmmaker ego driven - vanity rewards.

But that's not the fault of 'super-hero' cinema! That's a logical continuation of the blockbuster / tentpole paradigm established by Lucas and Spielberg! Without Superheroes, Disney would still make exclusively remakes of old cartoons, and Warner Brothers would make a gritty reboot of The Wizard of Oz, or something.

Frederik B, Monday, 21 October 2019 15:13 (four years ago) link

That's same shithead as earlier - I notice you didn't post his tweet about how if Marvel want to make serious cinematic movies, they should look at what DC are doing.

it's like the dietary equivalent of theaters serving a guaranteed four screens worth of Doritos every week, and if you blink and miss the moment they shove a nice dish out on the buffet for a week, you'll get more Doritos

I love some Doritos in moderation, but this is getting insane

yeah but superhero movies are the movies that are doing it now, today - whatever their antecedents are, the effect theyre having is what it is. Its not like he should have said 'those movies aren't cinema, nor would a theoretical different bad movie be, if it were to be made in an alternate universe where comic book movies don't exist."

And then a Michelin-starred chef is asked what he thinks of Doritos, and mildly expresses the opinion that Doritos are not haute cuisine, and many many people who do not own shares in PepsiCo have a month-long shitfit

He literally continued: Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. I think you're underestimating how stupid Scorsese is.

Frederik B, Monday, 21 October 2019 16:53 (four years ago) link
