shit I didn't realise there were so many blockages caused by rawhide bones. The ones I get are quite expensive and from a reputable online seller, and I thought they were just basically very chewy protein. oh well!

Douglas is such a beautiful dog ❤️❤️

gyac, Monday, 14 October 2019 17:58 (four years ago) link

NB: Bully Sticks have similar issues if you have a fast chewer though puppies go berzerk over them.
NB to NB: they smell real bad tho
NB to NB to NB: they are bull penises tho

xp

he's absolutely gorgeous, that much was evident the second I saw him as a pup - but he's maturing into a stunningly handsome dog. Does anyone know if those poundshop butcher's bones in cellophane wraps are good or bad? or what are the best doggy chewing treat options?

calzino, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:14 (four years ago) link

pretty doggos!

We used to do the king size kong with frozen food/peanut butter in it.

Yerac, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:35 (four years ago) link

Yeah, Kongs here too.

xp to Calzino: Those things can splinter if the dog crunches too hard on them, so they're not great for very chompy dogs. We're fine because we've got two weak-mouthed dogs and one Jack Russell who is mighty and strong but small.

just remembered the day my postman, who is a fan of Douglas came to say hello and ended up with his hand in a big cavernous labbie mouth, and when get got his hand back there was a huge globule of saliva dangling off his wrist..

Yes, an old housemate of mine used to call our labrador Lord Crustynosebridge because he always had a big dried flob across his muzzle. So debonair!

trishyb, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:38 (four years ago) link

I've just been reading that you should avoid white rawhide dog chews because they are the ones that are likely to have had extensive chemical treatment. The ones I get are a yellow ochre colour and don't stink like crap, so I feel a little bit better now. But the choke hazard is obv not good.

calzino, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:41 (four years ago) link

xp and when they shake that head - duck and cover!

calzino, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:43 (four years ago) link

I had a 70 lb boxer and he did pretty well on bully sticks, but he also had little dolphin teeth. He would just snap almost everything else in bits and then swallow them whole so never touched rawhide.

Yerac, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:48 (four years ago) link

Bones from an actual butcher. If they’re not giving them away outright, they will cost pennies, and not be origin-suspect like those from Poundland (also: raw every time). Get a bunch and lob them in the freezer. That’ll do for any germs and your dog will be BUSY for at least three hours.

I got my puppy 2 years ago, despite all the "not just for Christmas rhetoric" he has been brilliant distraction from Christmas and all the other depressing shit the rest of the year round. Here's to Widget!

very adorable wee dog

Ah calz, the breeder (who resisted the impulse to double the price of a puppy because: lockdown) wasn’t intending a Christmas litter but mumdog came in season earlier than expected.

I had a family dog as a teenager, but at 59, my first since then.

It's an English Springer Spaniel, two months old. We're having a good first morning. Feels like a day already...two hours.

trishyb, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 18:37 (two years ago) link

I know quite a few Springer Spaniel owners, at some point you may need binoculars when you let him off the lead. Yeah, those big paws are adorable!

I'm not on a farm, but I have a pretty big backyard where it can run around. Lots of local trails for walking later on.

How was Fredo's first day?

edited for dog profanity (cryptosicko), Thursday, 1 July 2021 17:27 (two years ago) link

Longest 30 hours of my life...Making incremental progress. I don't think he's done anything out of the ordinary, so that's good.

clemenza, Thursday, 1 July 2021 17:36 (two years ago) link

what is fredo's pooping situation like?

Karl Malone, Thursday, 1 July 2021 17:46 (two years ago) link

god, those first few months with my puppy Bird were so hectic. she was afraid to go in the hallway, let alone down the elevator and down to the loud streets. so were on puppy pads in the corner by the front door for waaaaay too long

Karl Malone, Thursday, 1 July 2021 17:47 (two years ago) link

My two labs both housetrained rather quickly. I don't know if I got just lucky, or if its just something they pick up quickly when they have easy access to the outdoors (an apartment would understandably be different).
